ETBU is the only non-asc West team in the tournament. The four teams in the tournament all won series last weekend to garner a berth in the tournament. The winner of this weekend s tournament will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships. How They Got Here The Cowboys finished second in the American Southwest Conference s West Division and won its best 2-of-3 series with UT-Dallas last weekend in the first round of the ASC Tournament. The Cowboys fell 5-3 in the opener when the Comets rallied for five runs in the eighth inning. HSU responded with a 2-1 win in 10 innings in game two of the series and used a complete-game from Dalton Rucker for a 6-1 win in game three. Concordia advanced with a two-game sweep of Louisiana College in Pineville, La. East Texas Baptist spanked McMurry twice and Texas Lutheran pounded Mississippi College in two games. Concordia is the only one of the four teams in the tournament to have won a previous title, with a win in They advanced to the College World Series that season. East Texas Baptist is 0-4 in two previous trips and Texas Lutheran went 1-2 in HSU is 8-9 all-time and advanced to the final in What s Been Working The Cowboys top three starters in the last 25 games Josh Bishop, Dalton Rucker and Kurtis Lay have ERAs of 2.08, 2.21 and 2.25 respectively and opponents are hitting.148,.189 and.197. 2 STEVE COLEMAN Head Coach, 8th year Lubbock Christian (1985) Coleman is in his eighth season as the Cowboys' head coach and has sent his team to the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 2001 and the fourth time in his career. The Cowboys second-place West Division finish is its best under Coleman. On June 18, 1997, Coleman became Hardin-Simmons' 22nd head coach in the 67- season history of the program. In seven years of high school coaching, his teams made the playoffs five times. Coleman previously coached at Permian High School in Odessa from 1994 through He took the Panthers to the Class 5A playoffs twice in four seasons. Before that, Coleman earned his first head coaching job at Frenship High School in Wolfforth. In three years there, he compiled a record and took the Tigers to the playoffs all three years, including a Class 4A state final appearance in Coleman was a standout third baseman and catcher at Lubbock Christian University from 1983 to He helped the Chaps win the NAIA World Series in 1983 and was honorable-mention All-American in He transferred to LCU after one year at Oklahoma University, where he earned a scholarship after a stellar career at Monterey High School in Lubbock. In 1981, he helped the Plainsmen to the Class 5A state title and, in the process, set four batting records that still stand today. Coleman earned a B.S. in Secondary Education from LCU in He was hired as an assistant baseball and football coach at Coronado High School in Lubbock in 1986, where he remained until Coleman, who was inducted into the LCU Hall of Honor in 1996, married the former Lisa Everett in They have two sons, Chad, 22, and Brad, 20 and both play baseball for the Cowboys. RETURN TRIP FOR POP Michael Popino, the Cowboys all-time leader in games played, will be making a return trip to the American Southwest Conference Tournament. He is the only Cowboy to have postseason experience in a HSU uniform. In the 2001 ASC Tournament, Popino started three of four games and went 0-for-11. He did score three runs and had a sacrifice fly in the championship game for one of the two Cowboy runs. Popino is the school s all-time leader in walks, and needs two doubles for that career record. STAY HOT In the last eight games, the Cowboy pitching staff has been locked in going 6-2 with a 1.16 ERA. Opponents are hitting just.181 in that time frame and the Cowboys are 6-2. One other reason the Cowboys have been hot of late is an improved defensive effort. The Cowboys are fielding.975 in that time frame. Craig Foreman, one of the Cowboys weekend starters earlier in the season, has moved to the bullpen and has not allowed a run and has given up just one hit in four and one-third innings. The Cowboys three top starters in the team frame Kurtis Lay (1-0, 2.25), Dalton Rucker (1-0, 0.60) and Josh Bishop (2-0, 0.75) are a combined 4-0 and have allowed just eight total runs, while striking out 47 and giving up just 30 hits. USING THEM ALL The Cowboys have gotten hot at the end of the season by using its entire roster. Players that have been mainly bench players have stepped up late in the season. Craig Johnson, Bo Vaculik and Kurtis Lay all have game-winning hits late in the year and Taylor Gibbs and Brian Fields have made things happen on the base paths as pinch runners. HSU lost to McMurry in both appearances in the final and The Cowboys are 8-9 all-time in the tournament with trips in 1997, 1998, 2000 and VS. THE FIELD The Cowboys are 3-5 against the field of the ASC Championship Tournament. The Cowboys split with ETBU and lost 2-of-3 to Texas Lutheran and Concordia-Austin. The Cowboys will not start a starter against Texas Lutheran or East Texas Baptist that was in the rotation at the time the two teams played. RULING THE ROOST Hardin-Simmons has placed in the top five in the American Southwest Conference in every sport it competes in this season, with the exception of volleyball. HSU won the ASC title in football and women s soccer in the fall and men s soccer lost in the semifinals of the ASC Tournament. In the winter both basketball teams advanced to the ASC semifinals and this spring the men s and women s tennis teams won ASC titles, softball lost in the finals and men s golf finished fifth and women s golf was third. HSU won West Division titles in men s and women s basketball, softball and men s and women s tennis. Twenty-one HSU athletes and coaches have won an ASC of the Year award this season.
