THOMAS IN 10TH YEAR AT HELM UTA head coach Darin Thomas is in his 10th season at the helm of the Mavs. After a eason in 2016, Thomas led the Mavs to their fifth 30 win season in his previous nine years. Thomas has coached UTA to 12 wins over top-10 teams in his career, including wins over No. 7 Oklaoma State and No. 5 TCU in UTA has seen 10 players advance to the big leagues, including seven coached by Thomas. Overall, he has coached 56 all-conference performers, 27 all-tournament team selections and three conference players of the year. Off the field, Thomas has helped guide the program to unprecedented success in the classroom, including a program best 3.18 team GPA in the fall of INJURY REPORT The Mavs opened the season without their starting second baseman, Christian Hollie, who suffered an injury in preseason practice. Quintin Rohrbaugh, Easton Johnson and Zac Cook filled Hollie s role up the middle in the early schedule. Junior reliever Daniel James, penciled in to be UTA s closer in 2017, was also out after having surgery in the winter, and returned to earn Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors in his debut week, allowing no runs over 7.2 innings in three outings. Shortstop starter Josh Minjarez suffered a season-ending injury in the win over No. 4 Texas Tech at Globe Life Ballpark, with Cook and RJ Williams starting each of the games in his stead. In addition, midweek starter, Reid Petty is out for the season after suffering an injury, with the Mavs using Jordon West, Matt Michalski and Austin Gardner in place of Petty in midweek starts. TOUGH SCHEDULE The Mavs play 16 opponents - of its 56 game schedule - that are ranked in the top-25. UTA will host preseason No. 1 TCU twice, while also hosting Louisiana and defending NCAA Champion Coastal Carolina in weekend tests. UTA will also travel to face Dallas Baptist, Texas and Oklahoma, and own a neutral-site win over No. 4 Texas Tech. COX BACK FOR SENIOR YEAR Catcher Brady Cox had a historic 2016 season as UTA s everyday backstop. Cox made 55 of UTA s 58 starts behind the plate, a challenging physical tole as the Mavs lacked a backup catcher, using reliever Dylan Schneider to spell Cox. Cox still hit good enough to lead the team and rank third in the confernece - while earning first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors. 7 OLSON RETURNS TO HEALTH A big addition to the UTA roster in 2017 came in the form of sophomore catcher/infielder Will Olson, who missed the 2016 season due to injury. Olson, who served as a back-up catcher in 2015 as a freshman, made UTA s opening-day start behind the plate, allowing Brady Cox to slide to first base. Olson, who also plays third base, will give UTA a left-handed bat in a right-handed dominant lineup and allos the Mavs to spell Cox behind the plate. CANADIAN IMPORT One of the largest recruits for UTA in the offseason was junior outfielder Phil Berthiaume, a native of Quebec City, Canada. Berthiaume earned the opening-day start in rightfield and as the leadoff hitter for the Mavs. He is a member of the preseason All-Canadian College Team, announced by the Canadian Baseball Network. In 2016 at Seminole State CC, he hit.385 with 10 homers and 15 doubles. SIMMONS THROWS STRIKES UTA returns its Friday-night starter Kadon Simmons in 2016 after the strike-throwing righty led the Sun Belt Conference in wins (nine) in his debut season. Simmons, a native of Cut & Shoot, Texas, is a competitor on the mound who showcased an ability to work deep into games as a junior. He finished with innings, a 9-4 record and a 3.05 ERA in 2016, walking just 24 and striking out 64. In midweek action, Reid Petty, Matt Michalski, Adam Meyer and Jordon West have each made starts. WHO WILL HIT LEADOFF? Dyanmic leadoff man Matt McLean graduated to professional baseball in 2016 leaving a large hole at the top of the order in UTA has used Phil Berthiaume, Zac Cook, RJ Williams, Easton Johnson and Christian Hollie as leadoff hitters in REPLACING A RELIEF ACE In 2016, UTA used submarine reliever Jacob Moreland 30 times. The senior was dynamic, working 71.1 innings with a 6-1 record, a 2.27 ERA and five saves. With Moreland now a member of the UTA coaching staff, the Mavs are in search of a key late-inning reliever. UTA used junior Jordon West in its first save chance of After missing four weeks due to hip surgery in the fall, Daniel James has returned to bolster the back end of the bullpen. In addition, UTA will use lefties Brad Vassar, Adam Meyer and Jake Wilcox and righties James, Dylan Schneider, Jordon West and Matt Michalski in relief. DEFENSIVE VERSATILITY A hallmark of UTA head coach Darin Thomas is to build a lineup of versatile defenders who can play all over the diamond. In the preseason, Thomas rotates the Mavs all over the field in an effor to produce well-rounded defenders who can help his lineup. UTA catcher Brady Cox and Will Olson each play third base, with infielders RJ Williams, Christian Hollie and Quintin Rohrbaugh also making starts in the outfield. UTA IN THE BIG LEAGUES UTA has had 11 big leaguers in its history, including notable standouts Hunter Pence and John Lackey. Michael Choice is UTA s most recent big leaguer after he earned conference player of the year honors in UTA has also produced current MLB righties Dillon Gee and Mark Lowe and former catchers Adam Moore and Dan Ortmeir. Former utility man Ryan Roberts also played with UTA, from , and former Kansas City Royals Manager Trey Hillman played with the Mavs from UNI WATCH White on White: 3-2 Gray on Gray: 4-2 Blue jersey top on white pinstripes: 1-3 Orange top on white pants: 2-1 OPS (ON-BASE + SLUGGING) Player OB% SLG OPS Berthiaume Cook Cox Funk Hollie Johnson Minjarez Olson Rohrbaugh Salinas Turner Vaughan Williams
