In the first pitch he saw, leadoff man Tyler Friis went deep for the Sycamores. WARD COMING OFF FRESHMAN ALL-AMERICAN CAMPAIGN Right-hander Tyler Ward became the 12th player in school history to pick up the honor and the first since Ryan Keafabber in Ward went 6-5 in his rookie season with the Sycamores, holding a 3.81 ERA with a save and 40 strikeouts. He fanned a season-high six in a win over Bradley on May 14 and picked up the start in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament matchup versus Missouri State. SYCAMORES PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL Indiana State has been picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll as voted on by the league coaches. The Sycamores are coming off a season a year ago and a second-place finish in the conference after a 13-8 MVC campaign. Dallas Baptist tallied 59 points and were named the favorite over second-place pick Southern Illinois (53 points), as the Salukis tallied three first-place votes. Missouri State (51 points) finished third, while Indiana State and Wichita State finished tied for fourth with 36 points. Bradley was selected in sixth place with 25 points, followed by Evansville (20 points) in the seventh slot and Illinois State eighth (8 points) MLB DRAFT In the history of Indiana State baseball, 125 players have been selected in the MLB Draft. Last season the Sycamores padded that number as Hunter Owen and Andy Young were each selected. Owen was drafted in the 25th round by the Pittsburg Pirates and Young was picked up by the Saint Louis Cardinals in the 37th round. Both were named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference Team last season. Young posted a.299 batting average this season for the Sycamores with six home runs and 34 RBI. Young added 16 doubles and three triples with 106 total bases. He led the team and finished fourth in the MVC with 55 runs scored. Young started all 56 of the Sycamores games at third base. MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE NOTES Beginning Friday, the first three series of the MVC conference season will take place with Dallas Baptist hosting Illinois State, Evansville heading to Southern Illinois and Missouri State welcoming Bradley. Quick Starts Crucial If your team has plans on sitting atop the MVC standings heading into the league s postseason tournament, you might want to get off to a good start as all but one team that has won the MVC regular season has won at least 15 games since 2010, the first year of a 21-game conference schedule. In the last seven seasons, Indiana State is the only league team to win the MVC regular season title with fewer than 15 league victories, as the Sycamores won the Valley with a 14-7 record in

3 UP NEXT FOR THE SYCAMORES at Illinois - Champaign, Ill. Friday-Sunday March 31-April 2 Tight Races Since the start of the 21-game conference schedule in 2010 (three-game series), the top two places in the regular-season standings have been separated by just one game in every year except three. Last season, Dallas Baptist (15-5) finished 2.5 games ahead of second-place Indiana State (13-8), in 2015 Missouri State (18-3) finished three games ahead of secondplace Dallas Baptist (15-6), while in 2013, Illinois State (16-5) also finished three games better than second-place Creighton (13-8). In 2010, both Wichita State and Illinois State finished 15-6 in the regular season, while the next closest teams were Indiana State and Southern Illinois, which each finished with a record. Back-to-Back Dallas Baptist is looking to become just the second Valley school to win back-to-back regularseason titles, as Wichita State remains the only league school to have ever accomplished this feat. The Shockers won back-to-back titles in , were winners of 14 consecutive regular-season championships from (includes one shared championship with Southern Illinois in 1990). Indiana State has been picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll as voted on by the league coaches. Bradley was selected in sixth place with 25 points, followed by Evansville (20 points) in the seventh slot and Illinois State eighth (8 points). Deja Vu Wichita State has been the league s most dominant team since the inception of a conference schedule in Since then, the Shockers have placed in the top three of the regular season standings in 30 of the 33 seasons the only three seasons Wichita State did not finish in the top three were in 1984, the year the league first adopted a conference schedule, in 2014 (4th place) and last season (tied for 5th). Three in RPI s Top-60 Three league teams continue to rank in the top-60 of the RPI, led by Missouri State (No. 40), DBU (No. 55) and Bradley (No. 59). Another two teams, Wichita State (No. 123) and Indiana State (No. 174), also rank in the RPI s top-175. Valley RPI Ranks No. 9 According to the latest RPI update from WarrenNolan.com (March 27), the Missouri Valley Conference ranks No. 9 amongst 32 leagues, up four positions from last week. Four of the Power-Five conferences (Big 12, SEC, Pac-12 and ACC) hold four of the top five positions, while the American Athletic Conference sits fifth. The Valley ranks just behind Conference USA and ahead of the Sun Belt in terms of conference RPI. Against the Field The MVC holds a winning record against 10 leagues in non-conference play (American East, A10, Big South, Big Ten, Horizon, Mountain West, SWAC, Summit, Sun Belt and WAC), and at least a.500 record against another three leagues (Metro Atlantic, Southland and Pac 12).
