Utah State softball (12-16, 2-4 MW) returns to home Mountain West play this week, as the team hosts Nevada (14-15, 3-3 MW). The Aggies and Wolf Pack will play on Thursday, March 29 and Friday, March 30, at 3 p.m., with the series finale set for noon on Saturday, March 31. FOLLOW ALONG All regular-season home and Mountain West games will continue to be broadcast as a USU Athletics Production on the Mountain West Network. All video feeds will be available live and in archive form at utahstateaggies.com/watch. Live stats and play-by-play information will be available through GameTracker, while updates will also be provided through the team s social media outlets. Links to each option will be available online prior to every game. #THROWBACKTHURSDAY Thursday s game against Nevada will feature a #ThrowbackThursday theme. The game will feature classic walk-up songs, childhood pictures of the Aggie players and a throwback giveaway. The first 100 fans in attendance will receive a Utah State jersey T-shirt designed to fit the Utah State look from the 1998 season PROMOTIONS Utah State softball will sponsor several in-game promotions throughout the 2018 season. At the conclusion of every Friday game, kids in attendance will have the opportunity to run the bases. Saturday games will feature post-game autographs with the Aggie team. During Sunday games, the Athletics department will sponsor softball bingo. Several themed days will be highlighted throughout the year. Throwback Thursday will be held March 29, followed by HURD Day on April 3. Bark in the Park will be held on April 11, while the team s annual Pink Game will be on April 14. Additional giveaways will also be sponsored during the season. Each of the awards was the first of each players career. Last season, five Utah State players earned conference weekly accolades six times. THE RBI RULERS Senior catcher/designated player Brina Buttacavoli leads the Aggies with 25 RBIs this season. Halfway through the season, she has already tallied the most RBIs of any season in her collegiate career. She currently ranks fifth in the Mountain West. Buttacavoli has recorded a career-best four RBIs in four games of her career, including two times this season. Junior first baseman Bailee Trapp is second on the team in that category with 20 RBIs, also shattering her prior career total of five. Trapp had a career-best six RBIs in the win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. MAKING THE SACRIFICE As a team, Utah State has hit 10 sacrifice flies this season, already matching the season total from a year ago. The Aggies rank second in the Mountain West in that category, behind San José State, which has 13 sac flies. Senior first baseman Bailee Trapp leads USU and the Mountain West with four sac flies on the season. FAMILIAR FOES Utah State and Nevada have a long history of competition. Though Nevada wasn t an official NCAA program until 2003, the teams series goes back to The Wolf Pack leads the all-time series, The teams played together in the WAC from , until both joined the Mountain West prior to the 2013 season. Utah State took the series win last season, going 2-1 in games in Reno. The teams met in Logan in 2016, where the Wolf Pack took the series, 2-1. WINNING THE SERIES Utah State earned its first Mountain West series win of the season last week, going 2-1 against UNLV. The Aggies dropped the first game of the weekend, 8-0, but came back to defeat the Rebels, 5-2 and 6-0. Last season, Utah State won seven of its eight conference series. TRAPPED AT FIRST Junior first baseman Bailee Trapp is the top defensive player for the Aggies and the Mountain West this season, tallying 226 putouts on 236 chances. Trapp recorded a career-high 17 putouts in the loss to Hawai i, the most of any player in the conference in a game this year. Trapp also has eight defensive assists on the season. FINDING THE LINEUP Utah State has utilized several different batting orders and defensive lineups this season. Junior first baseman Bailee Trapp is the only USU player to have played in and started all 28 games. No player has started every game at the same position, but Trapp has started 27 times at first base and once at third and senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke has made 27 starts in center field. SHUT THEM OUT Utah State has posted five shutouts this season, giving up zero runs against Texas Southern, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Pacific, UC Davis and UNLV. Conversely, USU has been shut out just once this season, in the first game against UNLV. TAKING ONE TO TAKE FIRST Senior third baseman Amee Aarhus has been hit by a pitch five times this season, the most of any Utah State player. Those five are the most a USU player has taken since 2016, when Noelle Johnson took 12 pitches. According to available research, the 12 are the single-season school record, held by Johnson and Kelley Kaneshiro. Kaneshiro holds the career hit-by-pitch record, taking 36 pitches over her four seasons. GO THE EXTRA MILE Utah State continues to be successful at the plate, adding up the extra-base hits. The Aggies have hit at least one multi-base hit in all but two games this season, tallying 29 doubles, six triples and 19 home runs. Sophomore outfielder Riley Plogger and senior third baseman Amee Aarhus lead the Aggies with six doubles each, while senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke leads with three triples and senior catcher Brina Buttacavoli has a team-best six home runs UTAH STATE SOFTBALL

3 HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT Utah State has recorded double-digit hits in 10 games this season, including a fivegame streak from Feb and in three of the last four games. The Aggies had a season-high 19 hits in the win against Buffalo. The 19 hits are the most since the Aggies put up 20 hits in a win against Valparaiso on March 11, FIFTH INNING STRETCH Utah State has scored the most runs in the fifth innings of games this season. So far, the Aggies have scored 35 runs in the fifth, nine more than in any other inning. STEAL AWAY Utah State has continued its trend of stealing bases, with a Mountain West-best 50 so far. Senior outfielder Jazmin Clarke leads the team and ranks second in the conference with 18 stolen bases on 19 attempts. BUTTACAVOLI BOMBS Senior catcher/designated player Brina Buttacavoli hit the second grand slam of her career in a loss to Boise State. Previously, she had a four-run home run in a loss to South Dakota State as a freshman in In the series against Boise State, Buttacavoli hit three home runs, and she leads the team with six on the year. BAND ON THE RUN Utah State has been involved in several high-scoring games this season. The Aggies have scored 15 runs in two different games, doing so against Buffalo and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Utah State has had 15 or more runs at least once in each of the last four seasons, but this is the first time the Aggies have done so twice in a season since Conversely, Utah State has allowed 15 runs in two different games, both against Boise State. NO HIT WONDER Freshman pitcher Delaney Hull recorded her first collegiate no-hitter in Utah State s 15-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. It was just the second no-hitter on record at Utah State, and the first since April 21, 1992, when Debbie Corbett no-hit New Mexico State. Hull s no-hitter is the first by a Mountain West pitcher this season. WINNING ONE HUNDRED With Utah State s win over Omaha, fifth-year head coach Steve Johnson recorded his 100th win at the helm of the Aggie program. Since taking over the Aggie program, Johnson has an overall record of He is the second-winningest head coach in program history, behind Lloydene Searle. Searle was the USU head coach from , compiling a record. WHITE SAVES THE DAY Sophomore pitcher Kellie White earned the third save of her career as she pitched the final two outs in the win against Omaha. She is one of nine Mountain West pitchers to record a save this season. White is now tied for fifth on the Utah State career saves record list. THE LAST TIME OUT Utah State posted a 3-2 record last week, splitting a midweek doubleheader against Idaho State (L, 7-5) and Utah Valley (W, 4-3), before winning two out of three Mountain West games at UNLV (L, 0-8 (5); W, 5-2; W, 6-0). Three pitchers saw time in the circle for the Aggies, combining for 22 strikeouts and eight walks, while posting a 3.50 ERA and allowing 35 hits and 20 runs. Offensively, senior catcher/designated player Brina Buttacavoli led the Aggies as she batted.462 (6-of-13), including one double. In all, the Aggies batted.309 (43-of-139) on the week, including five doubles, one triple and one home run. Defensively, junior first baseman Bailee Trapp tallied a team-high 35 putouts. From Salt Lake International Airport: Take I-80 East out of the airport to 215 North, which will run into I-15 North. Follow I-15 North to exit 362 (Highway 89-91) at Brigham City. Follow Highway 89 into Logan, where it becomes Main Street. Stay on Main Street until you reach 1000 North and turn right. Follow 1000 North east until it runs into the campus. 24 STEVE JOHNSON Head Coach Wartburg College, 1997 Fifth Season The second-winningest coach in program history, Steve Johnson is in his fifth season at Utah State, after being named the ninth head coach of the Aggie softball program on June 26, Under Johnson, the Aggies finished the 2017 season with a overall record, while going 14-9 in Mountain West play to finish tied for third in league standings. The 33 wins marked the most by the Utah State program since 1993, when the team posted a record. Additionally, the 14 conference wins were the most since 1996, when the team went in Big West action. USU also made its first postseason appearance in 24 years in 2017, playing in the inaugural National Invitational Softball Championship. Three Utah State softball players earned all-mountain West accolades in 2017, as pitcher Kellie White earned first-team honors, and second baseman Victoria Saucedo and outfielder Riley Plogger were named to the second team. The team shattered the program s stolen base record with 92 on the year, while several individual players earned a spot on the career record lists. On the year, Utah State batted.309, just one point shy of tying the school record. The Aggies tallied 431 hits and scored 265 runs during the season. Off the field, nine Utah State players earned academic all-mountain West honors, while two were named Mountain West Scholar Athletes. Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In 2015, Johnson coached the Aggies to a record, going in Mountain West action. The Aggies ended the season on a threegame winning streak in a sweep over Boise State. Overall, the Aggies hit.254 on the year, ending the season with 439 hits and 252 runs scored. The Aggies also saw an increase in doubles from 58 in 2014 to 81. As a team, Utah State set two then-records from the plate in 2015, with 229 RBIs and 40 home runs. Individually, outfielder Hailey Froton bested her own single-season RBI record (48), while claiming the career record (132), while Armendariz tied the single-season home run record, hitting 12. Four Utah State players earned all-mountain West honors following the 2015 campaign, as Froton and pitcher Noelle Johnson earned first-team honors and Armendariz and Chow were named to the second team. The four all-conference recognitions are the most for a Utah State team since 1993, when four players earned all-big West honors. Off the field, five student-athletes received academic all-mountain West honors, while three were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In his first season at Utah State in 2014, Johnson led the team to an record. Included in that record was a 6-18 conference record in Utah State s first year in the Mountain West. Johnson led the 2016 team to a record, while going in Mountain West action. Utah State finished tied for third in the conference, their highest finish since joining the Mountain West and the highest overall conference finish since It is also the first time since the 1996 campaign that Utah State finished with a record above.500. Over the course of the 2016 season, the Aggies set new program records in runs scored (281), doubles (86), home runs (50), total bases (701), RBIs (259), slugging percentage (.492) and on base percentage (.383). On an individual level, three players set or tied single-season records. Outfielder Sarah Chow hit a program-best eight triples on the year, while outfielder Jazmin Clarke shattered the stolen base record with 25 during the season. Saucedo tied the home run record, hitting 12 during her junior season. Three Aggies earned all-mountain West honors in 2016, as Clarke, Saucedo and outfielder/pitcher Alleyah Armendariz were each named to the second team. Additionally, 12 members of the USU roster earned academic all-conference honors and five were named UTAH STATE SOFTBALL

25 In his USU debut, Johnson coached Saucedo to Mountain West Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference honors, while helping Noelle Johnson to break the USU single-season strikeout record (218). Johnson also coached Froton to the then-single-season RBI record with 41. The Aggies ended the 2014 season with a.251 batting average, improving from.237 the previous year. USU hit 32 home runs while advancing to 537 total bases. Along with Saucedo s all-conference honors, nine players earned academic all-mountain West accolades, while four were named Mountain West Scholar Athletes. Johnson took over the Utah State program after five years at Auburn as the assistant head coach. Working primarily with the Tigers hitters, slappers and infielders, Johnson helped Auburn advance to three Southeastern Conference Tournaments and NCAA Regional appearances in four years. In 2011, Auburn was ranked in both the ESPN and NFCA top 25 polls, spending 12 weeks in the NFCA poll and reaching a high of No. 21. Auburn also registered its first-ever series win over a top-five team, taking two-of-three games from No. 4 Georgia. The 2012 Tigers hit the most home runs (46) since the 2005 squad hit a program-record 68. At Auburn, Johnson coached five players who earned all-sec honors, and four players who earned SEC all-freshman team accolades, including tying a school record with two in In 2011, Auburn set program top-five marks in batting average (.279), runs scored (272), RBI (235), doubles (97), triples (8) and walks (160). Johnson made his head coaching debut at the Division II level, spending the seasons at UNC Pembroke, where he compiled a record. Johnson led the Braves to a overall record in 2008 and the Peach Belt Conference Championship, going 17-1 in league action. He also led UNC Pembroke to the program s first ever NCAA Regional appearance in 2008, earning NFCA South Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors in That season, the Braves set or tied 33 school records, including most wins in a season (46) and most conference wins (17).
