Utah State softball (21-7, 4-2 MW) continues its 2017 season this weekend with a threegame Mountain West series at Boise State (21-9, 3-3 MW). The two teams will begin the series on Friday, March 31 at 4 p.m., followed by single games on Saturday and Sunday, April 1-2, at 4 p.m. and Noon, respectively. FOLLOW ALONG All regular-season home and Mountain West games will continue to be broadcast as a USU Athletics Production on the Mountain West Network. All video feeds will be available live and in archive form at utahstateaggies.tv. Live stats and play-by-play information will be available through GameTracker, while updates will also be provided through the team s social media outlets. Links to each option will be available online prior to every game. SCOUTING BOISE STATE Boise State welcomes the Aggies to town with a 21-9 overall record, while going 3-3 in Mountain West play. The Broncos opened conference play with a 2-1 series win over Colorado State, but dropped a road series to Fresno State, 1-2, last weekend. The Broncos returned 13 players, including 10 starters, to the field this season, from a roster that went overall and 6-18 in Mountain West play. Sophomore shortstop Rebekah Cervantes leads the Broncos with a.440 batting average. She has 37 hits, 34 runs and 34 RBIs on the year, leading the team in all three categories. Eight pitchers have seen time in the circle for the Broncos. Senior Christina Washington has had a team-high 82.1 innings of work, where she has a 2.64 ERA and an 11-4 individual record. As a team, Boise State is batting.330 (273-of-827), while posting a combined 3.30 ERA and striking out 152 batters. UtahStateAggies.com Mailing Address Old Main Hill Logan, Utah Utah State and Boise State have a fairly limited history, as the Bronco softball program was created in The teams played together in the Western Athletic Conference, before both joined the Mountain West. Boise State leads the all-time series, Last year, Utah State swept the three-game series in Logan. A FEW GOOD FRESHMEN With Utah State s 6-3 win over Nevada last Saturday, freshman pitcher Kellie White became the first member of the USU pitching staff to reach double-digit wins. She is the first Utah State freshman pitcher to record 10 or more wins since 1995, when Tara Thompson went on the season. Additionally, White is one of just five freshman pitchers in the NCAA to have double-digit wins. Overall, she ranks 42nd nationally in total wins. This year, White leads the Aggie pitchers with an 11-2 record and a 1.81 earned run average. FIRST IMPRESSIONS Freshman shortstop Devan Sperry made her first-career start last week, in Utah State s 17-5 win over Nevada. On the day, she was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, tying the school record for hits in a single game. Her hits included a double and a home run, both of which were the first of her collegiate career. Additionally, she tallied seven RBIs on the day, setting a program single-game record. Sperry scored two runs and added one defensive assist in the win. Sperry was named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week. DYNAMIC DUO Freshman outfielder Riley Plogger and freshman pitcher Kellie White swept the Mountain West weekly awards this week, as they were named the Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Plogger and White are the second and third Utah State players to earn a conference weekly award this season, making this the first season the team has had multiple players recognized since joining the Mountain West. This is only the second time in program history that Utah State has swept the player and pitcher accolades. Allison Lenzora and Mandy Harmon were named the Western Athletic Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week on May 2, Plogger and White join an elite group, as just four other freshmen in program history have received a conference Player of the Week award. This is the first time this season that the Mountain West has awarded both awards to players from the same team. Last year, there were four weekly award sweeps. WOMAN ON THE RUN With her sole run scored in Sunday s win over Nevada, senior 2B/3B Victoria Saucedo took possession of the Utah State career runs record. Over her four seasons, Saucedo has scored 105 runs. She tops the previous record of 104, set by Rhealee Thorn, who played for the Aggies from 1994 to LEAVING A LEGACY Along with the career runs record, senior 2B/3B Victoria Saucedo is ranked on several Utah State record lists. She is currently second in home runs (31), third in total bases (303) and RBIs (111), tied for fifth in doubles (32) and ninth in hits (178). With eight home runs already this season, she needs just one more to add her name to the single-season home run record for a second time. She is tied for the single-season record, as she had 12 out-of-the-park hits last season. A RECORD RUNS THROUGH IT Utah State scored 17 runs in a five-inning win to close-out the series at Nevada last weekend. The 17 runs are the most a Utah State team has ever scored against a conference opponent, topping the previous best of 16. The Aggies scored 16 runs against Boise State twice in the last two seasons. All-time, Utah State s single-game run record came in a 24-1 win over Eastern Utah on April 22, RAINY DAY MAKE-UP Utah State played just one game of a scheduled doubleheader against in-state rival Utah Valley last week, when rain and lightning forced the cancellation of the second game. Both teams have reached an agreement for a make-up game that will be played on Tuesday, April 25, at 2 p.m. Utah Valley will host the Aggies for the rematch. Though last week s contest was in the second inning when it was called, the teams will start over for the April 25 game. NATIONAL TREASURE With the release of the most recent NCAA rankings, Utah State is among the Top-10 in the country in four categories. The Aggies also have an additional five Top-50 rankings. 3 Utah State is currently ranked seventh in triples per game (0.50), eighth in stolen bases per game (2.32), eighth in slugging percentage (.525) and 10th in batting average (.340). At the individual level, senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo is 12th in triples (4). Junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke ranks 15th in stolen bases, with 0.79 per game, while senior 2B/3B Victoria Saucedo is 36th in the nation with eight home runs. Senior pitcher April Brown is one of 11 pitchers to have hit just one batter on the year. Freshman pitcher Kellie White ranks 42nd nationally, with 11 individual victories. THE HOTTEST START YET After going 16-4 to start the season, this year s Utah State team has secured the best 20- game start in school history. The new best topped the previous 20-game start record of 15-5 set by the 1986 squad. It only took Utah State 13 games to reach double-figure wins, doing so the quickest since 1986, when it also took 13 games. The 1978 squad holds the record for getting to 10 wins, doing so in 12 games. The Utah State team has recorded double-digit wins in all but two seasons in program history. STEALING A SPOT IN THE RECORD BOOK While Utah State continues to rack up the stolen base numbers, two particular players stand out. Junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke leads the team with 22 steals on the year. Combined with her 26 from the two previous seasons, Clarke is now the all-time record holder at Utah State with 46 stolen bases in her career. She set the single-season record a year ago, with 25. Her 22 this season also put her in second place on the single-season record list. Joining Clarke on the record lists is sophomore outfielder Mia Maher. Maher is a perfect 15-of-15 on stolen bases this season, which ties for sixth on the single-season record list. With 10 steals as a freshman a year ago, Maher ranks ninth on the career stolen base record list with 25. As a team, Utah State has tallied 65 stolen bases this season. The program record is 67 in a year, set by the 1981 team. The Aggies had seven stolen bases against Siena, which set a new single-game record. TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN WEST Utah State continues to lead the conference in several categories. Offensively, the Aggies lead the league in slugging percentage (.525), home runs (27), triples (12) and stolen bases 65). The USU pitching staff has dominated the conference, as it leads in six categories, including ERA (2.36), opposing batting average (.234), runs allowed (93), earned runs allowed (62), hits allowed (165) and doubles allowed (26). Individually, senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo leads the league in triples (4), while junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke leads in stolen bases (25). In conference play, freshman outfielder Riley Plogger has the best batting average in the league, where she is hitting.571. She also has the best on-base percentage, at.684. Freshman pitcher Kellie White has the lowest ERA against conference opponents, at LAST TIME OUT Utah State posted a 3-1 record last week, as the team defeated in-state rival Utah Valley (11-2 (6)), before going 2-1 in a Mountain West road series at Nevada. The Aggies and Wolf Pack split a doubleheader (2-6, 6-3), while USU took the series with a 17-5 five-inning win in the weekend finale. Three Utah State pitchers saw time in the circle during the week, where freshman Kellie White led the group with a 3-0 record and a 1.94 ERA. On the week, the trio allowed 19 hits and 16 runs, eight of which were unearned, while striking out 10 batters and walking 11. Playing in just one full game, freshman shortstop Devan Sperry led the Aggie offense, batting.800 (4-for-5). Freshman outfielder Riley Plogger hit.583 (7-of-12) in her four starts. Senior first baseman Paxton Provost was tops defensively, tallying 27 putouts. UP NEXT Utah State returns to the friendly confines of LaRee & LeGrand Johnson Field next week for four games. The Aggies will open the week with the first game of a home-and-home series with in-state rival BYU on Wednesday, April 5, at 4 p.m. The team will then continue Mountain West play as it hosts Fresno State over the weekend. The series between the Aggies and Bulldogs will begin on Friday, April 7, at 3 p.m. The series will continue in a 3:30 game on Saturday, April 8, while the weekend will conclude on Sunday, April 9, at Noon. From Salt Lake International Airport: Take I-80 East out of the airport to 215 North, which will run into I-15 North. Follow I-15 North to exit 362 (Highway 89-91) at Brigham City. Follow Highway 89 into Logan, where it becomes Main Street. Stay on Main Street until you reach 1000 North and turn right. Follow 1000 North east until it runs into the campus. 24 STEVE JOHNSON Head Coach Fourth Season Wartburg College 97 USU Record: (.444) Career Record: Same Steve Johnson is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah State softball team, after being named the ninth head coach of the Aggie program on June 26, Johnson led the 2016 team to the program s best record in 20 years. The Aggies finished the year with a record, the best team record since 1996, while going in Mountain West action. The Aggies 12 Mountain West wins are the most conference victories since the 1996 team posted a Big West record. Utah State finished tied for third in the conference, their highest finish since joining the Mountain West and the highest overall conference finish since This is also the first time since the 1996 campaign that Utah State finished with a record above.500. Over the course of the 2016 season, the Aggies set new program records in runs scored (281), doubles (86), home runs (50), total bases (701), RBIs (259), slugging percentage (.492) and on base percentage (.383). On an individual level, three players set or tied single-season records. Outfielder Sarah Chow hit a program-best eight triples on the year, while outfielder Jazmin Clarke shattered the stolen base record with 25 during the season. Third baseman Victoria Saucedo tied the home run record, hitting 12 during her junior season. Three Aggies earned all-mountain West honors in 2016, as Clarke, Saucedo and outfielder/pitcher Alleyah Armendariz were each named to the second team. Additionally, 12 members of the USU roster earned academic all-conference honors and five were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In 2015, Johnson coached the Aggies to a record, going in Mountain West action. The Aggies ended the season on a threegame winning streak in a sweep over Boise State. Overall, the Aggies hit.254 on the year, ending the season with 439 hits and 252 runs scored. The Aggies also saw an increase in doubles from 58 in 2014 to 81. As a team, Utah State set two then-records from the plate in 2015, with 229 RBIs and 40 home runs. Individually, outfielder Hailey Froton bested her own single-season RBI record (48), while claiming the career record (132), while Armendariz tied the single-season home run record, hitting 12. Four Utah State players earned all-mountain West honors following the 2015 campaign, as Froton and pitcher Noelle Johnson earned first-team honors and Armendariz and Chow were named to the second team. The four all-conference recognitions are the most for a Utah State team since 1993, when four players earned all-big West honors. Off the field, five student-athletes received academic all-mountain West honors, while three were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In his first season at Utah State in 2014, Johnson led the team to an record. Included in that record was a 6-18 conference record in Utah State s first year in the Mountain West. In his USU debut, Johnson coached Saucedo to Mountain West Freshman of the Year and first-team all-conference honors, while Utah State Softball Notes 24 March 29, 2017

25 helping Noelle Johnson to break the USU single-season strikeout record (218). Johnson also coached Froton to the then-single-season RBI record with 41. The Aggies ended the 2014 season with a.251 batting average, improving from.237 the previous year. USU hit 32 home runs while advancing to 537 total bases. Along with Saucedo s all-conference honors, nine players earned academic all-mountain West accolades, while four were named Mountain West Scholar Athletes. Johnson took over the Utah State program after five years at Auburn as the assistant head coach. Working primarily with the Tigers hitters, slappers and infielders, Johnson helped Auburn advance to three Southeastern Conference Tournaments and NCAA Regional appearances in four years. In 2011, Auburn was ranked in both the ESPN and NFCA top 25 polls, spending 12 weeks in the NFCA poll and reaching a high of No. 21. Auburn also registered its first-ever series win over a top-five team, taking two-of-three games from No. 4 Georgia. The 2012 Tigers hit the most home runs (46) since the 2005 squad hit a program-record 68. At Auburn, Johnson coached five players who earned all-sec honors, and four players who earned SEC all-freshman team accolades, including tying a school record with two in In 2011, Auburn set program top-five marks in batting average (.279), runs scored (272), RBI (235), doubles (97), triples (8) and walks (160). Johnson made his head coaching debut at the Division II level, spending the seasons at UNC Pembroke, where he compiled a record. Johnson led the Braves to a overall record in 2008 and the Peach Belt Conference Championship, going 17-1 in league action. He also led UNC Pembroke to the program s first ever NCAA Region- al appearance in 2008, earning NFCA South Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors in That season, the Braves set or tied 33 school records, including most wins in a season (46) and most conference wins (17).
