In front of a crowd of 12,283, the pitching duo of senior Mike Swindell and junior Daniel McCutchen led the Sooners to victory with a pair of standout efforts. McCutchen was almost perfect in three innings of relief as the right-hander allowed just one hit for and struck out one for the save. OU was not so lucky in the fi rst two games of the series. The Cowboys used six runs in the fi rst inning and two more in the sixth to hold off the Sooners fi ve runs, scored in the fourth and fi fth inning, for an 8-5 victory in the series opener. In game two, OSU scored the game-winning run in the top of the 13th inning for the 6-5 win on Saturday, after Friday s game was postponed due to rain. 3 Interim Head Coach Sunny Golloway Sunny Golloway was named the Sooners interim head coach on May 1, 2005, after Larry Cochell resigned the same day. After eight successful seasons as the head coach at Oral Roberts University, Sunny Golloway, a veteran of the Sooner coaching staff from , returned to the University of Oklahoma last year to help the program begin competing for championships again. Golloway, who is 3-1 in 2005 as a head coach, currently ranks 11th on the list of winningest active coaches in Division I, in terms of winning percentage (minimum fi ve years at a four-year school), with a.683 mark ( ). In his fi rst season back, Golloway helped the Sooners nearly hit their target. He helped direct the 2004 team that won the prestigious Kia Klassic, became a fi xture in the nation s top 25 rankings again, recorded the program s highest fi nish (second place) in Big 12 Conference history and made a return to the NCAA Tournament, hosting of a regional tourney. As an assistant on the accomplished OU coaching staffs of the early 1990s, Golloway made three trips to the College World Series, including the 1994 National Championship run. Last year he reunited with the program and head coach Larry Cochell in an assistant capacity (his sixth season as an assistant at OU) and this year he embarks on his fi rst season as Associate Head Coach after his status was elevated following last season s success. Golloway s familiarity with Sooner greatness will continue to aid the team as he instructs the team s hitters and fi elders. Golloway s impact has also been felt in other areas of the program as well. OU s two recruiting classes since his arrival have ranked in the top 10 in Collegiate Baseball s national rankings. He has helped in the development of OU s talent upon their arrival, working with last year s Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and three other players who earned All-Big 12 honors. Golloway s Record as a Division I Head Coach Year School Record Pct Oral Roberts Oral Roberts Oral Roberts Oral Roberts Oral Roberts Oral Roberts Oral Roberts Oral Roberts Oklahoma Total Ninth Year SAVAGE HONORED Junior Will Savage (7-3) was named the Big 12 Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week along with Kansas Don Czyz, for the week ending May 9. Savage led the Sooners to three wins last week, including two key conference victories on the road against Kansas State. Savage appeared in all four games last week, all in relief, for OU and recorded his fi rst of three wins on Tuesday against Wichita State. In that game, the West Hills, Calif., native pitched 4.2 innings out of the Sooners pen, in which he allowed just one run and struck out three. In back-to-back games against Kansas State, the reliever worked 4.1 total innings in the two appearances, giving up just two hits and a walk to the 16 Wildcats he faced. He also appeared in the series opener, tossing an inning in the Sooners 8-5 loss. He combined to record a 1.80 ERA in the four appearances (10 innings) in which he allowed two runs on 10 hits, while striking out three batters opposite one walk. He currently leads the team in wins (7), appearances (23), innings pitched (75) and ranks third in strikeouts (45). Steven Guerra is the only other Sooner to collect the conference honor this season. Guerra was also a co-winner back on March 29 after throwing a complete game, three hitter, against Texas A&M. MORE ON THE SERIES WIN OVER KANSAS STATE The Sooners belted a three-game, series-high nine homers against the Wildcats. The most OU had knocked out, in a three-game set, before last weekend was fi ve, which occurred at home against Northwestern State. The nine dingers hit against KSU is the most any Sooner team has hit in a Big 12 series since the 2000 season (13 vs. ISU). Ryan Rohlinger contributed three homers in the KSU series and became the fi rst Sooner to belt round-trippers in three consecutive games in For just the second and third time this season, OU came out on top to win a ball game when trailing after eight innings. In game two, OU was down 7-6 after eight frames and came back to win,10-8, in 11 innings. In the fi nal contest, the Sooners overcame a three-run defi cit to defeat KSU by a score of 6-5 in 10 innings. McCUTCHEN PROVES TO BE OU S ACE IN THE HOLE Since blowing a save against Nevada on March 6, Daniel McCutchen has returned to the Sooners starting lineup and has been solid in four Big 12 outings. Now the Sooners Friday starter, McCutchen made his second start of the season, fi rst since Feb. 12, against No. 1 Texas (4/15). Despite a no-decision and an OU loss, McCutchen was stellar in nine innings of fi ve-hit ball. He also posted a season-high ten strikeouts in the game. Against No. 5 Nebraska on April 28, the hurler recorded his fi rst win since defeating Northwestern State on March 13. In his four Big 12 starts, McCutchen has a 1-1 record and has struck out 32 batters in 29.1 innings pitched. His ERA in that span is 1.84 and opponents are hitting just.226 off him. RALEY IS CLUTCH Junior (2B) Russell Raley has put the bat on the ball in critical situations for OU this season. He s hitting.365 with runners on base,.358 with two out and.800 (4-for-5) with the bases loaded. He s come up 18 times with a runner at third and less than two out, and he s driven in that runner 15 times. Raley had his 10-game hitting streak snapped over the weekend vs. KSU. Earlier in the season, Raley had a 13-game hitting streak come to a halt against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, despite the fact that the Uvalde, Texas native reached base four times in the game (two errors and two walks). Raley was one game shy of tying his career high of 14 that he set a year ago in between April 13 and May 7. CAUFIELD S SPEED = SOONERS SUCCESS Junior Chuckie Caufi eld leads the 2005 Sooners, after 47 games, with eight stolen bases and is tied for second on the club with 38 runs scored. In games where the centerfi elder swipes a base, OU is 7-0 and when the Ada, Okla., native scores a run, OU is (.615). Even in the three games that Caufi eld has been caught stealing, the Sooners remain perfect with two more victories. RELIEF WORKHORSE Sooner reliever Will Savage has become OU s go-to guy in the bullpen. The junior leads the team with 75 innings pitched and 23 appearances. Savage has started just fi ve games this season and since that last start (April 12 vs. TCU), he has been lights out. In the nine relief appearances since the TCU game, Savage has went on to record a 4-0 mark to accompany his 1.14 ERA in 23.2 innings of work. In addition, he has allowed eight runs (three earned) on 22 hits and three walks, while striking out 11 and holding batters to a.239 batting average. EVEN IN EXTRA INNINGS After starting the season 0-3 in games played in extra frames (Northwestern State, Texas A&M and Texas), the Sooners have battled back to.500 play with three consecutive victories. The fi rst came in a 2-1 pitchers duel against Missouri in the series opener (10 innings) and then OU posted back-to-back, extra-inning victories last weekend against Kansas State (11 and 10 innings). CAPTAINS COME ALIVE Eric Thornton, Matt Bose and Eric Thornton, OU s 2005 captains, had a successful weekend against Kansas State. The three seniors combined for 10 hits, nine RBI and four runs scored. Although Thornton is no stranger to the Sooners starting lineup (44 starts), it was just the 16th start for Matt Bose and sixth start for Scuderi this season. In two games vs. KSU, Bose went 3-for-6 with a RBI and two runs, while Scuderi was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Thornton, Bose and Scuderi, the team s only seniors, were named the team s captains before the Dallas Baptist game on March 29. The trio combined for 178 appearances last season (163 starts) and were accountable for a third of the team s RBI (101/329) and over a quarter of the runs scored (104/387). ROAD WOES The Sooners won their fi rst road series (2-1) of the season against Kansas State last weekend. Before that series, OU was 0-4 in three-game sets taking place on the road. The Sooners got their fi rst road win of the year versus then-no. 22 TCU on March 22 and currently stand at 5-13 this season. Four of the Sooners fi ve losses in a three-game series, have come on the road (Missouri, Texas, ASU and Baylor). So far this season, OU is 7-16 in games played away from the friendly confi nes of L. Dale Mitchell Park. Five of those contests have been played at neutral sites with OU participating in two tournaments this season (Coca-Cola Classic and the KIA Bash). OU is batting just.229, in true road games, with 12 home runs and 60 RBI in those contests. Before the KSU series (9 HR), OU had hit just three home runs on the road. RODRIGUEZ BACK ON THE RISE Junior Freddy Rodriguez entered the Northwestern State series as the Sooners leader in batting average (.409), almost two months ago and had his nine game hitting streak (17 hits and 12 RBI) come to an end in the series fi nale. For the next 15 games the shortstop struggled, collecting just fi ve hits in that time and on April 10 after a game with Kansas, he was batting just.248. Since that game, Rodriguez has come back strong. In the last 16 games, he has collected the most hits (25) by any Sooner in that span. The Westminister, Calif., native is currently batting.309 (second best on the team) and has collected eight mult-hit games in the last 16 contests, after having only fi ve after the fi rst 31 games. PATTERSON SPELLS RELIEF Left-hander Garrett Patterson has adjusted to his new role as a reliever in the Sooners bullpen by recording two saves (Kansas and Wichita State) and a win (Missouri) in his seven relief appearances since leaving the starting rotation on March 18 against Arizona State. Patterson left that game with a lower-abdominal strain, but has since returned and pitched effectively in relief. In 14 innings out of the bullpen, Patterson has allowed four runs (three earned) on fi ve hits and 13 walks. In addition, the McAlester, Okla., native has struck out 22. His best relief appearance may have come against Missouri (4/23), in which he fi nished off a suspended game to pick up what Daniel McCutchen started. Patterson threw 4.2 innings of one-hit ball against the Tigers. The two hurlers combined to strike out a season-high 15 batters in the ten-inning win (2-1) over then-no. 17 Missouri.

On Feb. 28 against Western Illinois, Kaiser started with a double, triple and a single but could not come up with a homer in his fi nal at bat. He has now served as the team s leadoff hitter in eight games (11-for-34), batted second in three games (4-for-15), batted out of the three-hole in 23 contests (26-for-94), batted fourth in seven games (10-for-29), batted fi fth in fi ve games (5-for-18) and hit in the sixth spot (3-for-4) in his remaining game. MR. VERSATILITY Freddy Rodriguez has proved to be a valuable asset to the Sooners offense and defense. The versatile infi elder, who has played at every position in the infi eld this season. OU is 4-4 when he starts at fi rst base and when he starts at the other infi eld positions. Charting Rodriguez in the fi eld: 1B 2B SS 3B DH Totals Starts Appearances TOP 25 OPPOSITION The Sooners have suffered over half of their losses (12/21) this season to teams ranked in either the Baseball America of Sports Weekly/ESPN polls, at the time of competition. On the reverse side, OU has just six wins against ranked teams (Baylor, Missouri, Nebraska, TCU and Texas A&M-2). JUCO FLAVOR Exactly half of the Sooners current roster consists of players that have transferred to OU from a junior college. Of those 16 athletes, seven are from colleges in the state of Oklahoma, seven from California and one each from Nebraska and Wisconsin. CAUFIELD CONNECTION Members of the Caufi eld family have enjoyed success at the University of Oklahoma as LaNeisha Caufi eld ( ) was a member of the women s basketball 2002 Final Four team. Now, Chuckie Caufi eld (LaNeisha s brother), quickly made his mark on the 2005 OU baseball team. Caufi eld has started 36 of the 39 games he has played in so far in his fi rst season at OU and has done so by reaching base and making some solid defensive plays. He is batting.288 with 11 RBI, 38 runs scored and leads the team with eight stolen bases. He has also collected seven doubles and a triple so far this season. In addition, the Sooners leadoff hitter has been hit 14 times, a mark that ranks fi rst on the club. The most any Sooner was beamed last season was 12 (Russell Raley and Andrew McGuire). GUERRA NAMED BIG 12 CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK Junior Steven Guerra was named the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 29 following the Paso Robeles, Calif., native s third win of the season. Guerra pitched a complete game three-hitter with four strikeouts in the Sooners 2-0 shutout of then-no. 14 Texas A&M, a day after celebrating his 21st birthday (March 24). The hurler held the Aggies to a.109 average for the game (3 for 29) as the Sooners went on to take the fi rst game of a doubleheader sweep over Texas A&M, and the series advantage (2-1) back in March at L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman, Okla. OU s Guerra shared the honor with senior Scott Richmond (OSU) after he led the Cowboys to a series win over nationally-ranked Baylor. Friday s shutout of Texas A&M was the longest outing and only complete game for OU s staff this season. Guerra threw 125 pitches and retired 10 straight Aggies at one point in the game and 20 of the last 22 batters he faced. The Aggies managed to move just three runners in scoring position on the right-hander. CAUFIELD STEALS THE SHOW Junior Chuckie Caufi eld stole his sixth stolen base of the season in style on March 22 in OU s 5-4 win over Texas Christian. The swipe of home plate in the ninth inning provided OU with the go-ahead run against TCU. He was thrown out earlier in the game for just his second unsuccessful attempt this year. Not only did Caufi eld s speed help win the contest, but his bat was more than suffi cient hitting out his regular leadoff spot. The Ada, Okla., native fi nished the game 6 - OU vs. Oklahoma State Notes

WALK-OFF BOMB Ryan Rohlinger hit the second walk-off home run of his Oklahoma career on March 13 to help the Sooners top Northwestern State and give OU the series win (2-1). Rohlinger drove an 0-2 fastball over the right fi eld fence in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two runners on, to push the Sooners ahead 7-6 for the win. His fi rst career walk-off homer at OU came a year ago in head coach Larry Cochell s 500th victory at OU. The two-run home run gave the Sooners a 7-5 win over Arkansas-Little Rock on April 27. Rohlinger fi nished the fi nal game against Northwestern State with a 2-for-3 day that included three RBI and two runs scored. COMBINED NO-HITTER MARKS FIRST IN SCHOOL HISTORY Six different OU pitchers saw time on the mound to strike out 11 batters and record the fi rst combined no-hitter in school history on March 9 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Sooners pitching staff only allowed fi ve base runners for the game on four walks and a hit batsman. Before the game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, six OU hurlers have thrown a complete game without allowing a hit. The last time an individual Sooner threw a no-hitter occurred when Jim Husling baffl ed Old Dominion in Freshman Kevin Duke made his fi rst career start and set the tone for the rest of the day after lasting three innings and striking out three in the process to record the win. He was followed by junior John Brownell (2.0 innings, 2 strikeouts), junior Daniel McCutchen (1.0 innings, 2 strikeouts), sophomore Ryan Mottern (1.0 innings, 2 strikeouts), junior Will Savage (1.0 innings, strikeout) and junior P.J. Sandoval (1.0 innings, strikeout) who all managed to hold the Golden Lions hitless through nine innings. The March 9 game was also the fi rst and only game this season that the OU pitching staff held a team scoreless.. FALL BIG 12 COMMISSIONER S HONOR ROLL Fifteen members of the 2005 OU baseball team were named to the Fall 2004 Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll as announced by the conference offi ce on Tuesday. Freshman Brad Burns and sophomore Aaron Ivey led the way with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.00 GPA for the semester to be recognized on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll. Other members included: Tyler Adkins, Matt Bose, Jared Freeman, Tyler Gooch, Steven Guerra, Brent Hodge, Kody Kaiser, Chad Lembeck, Blake Mitchell, Ryan Rohlinger, P.J. Sandoval and Cory Williamson. COCA-COLA CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Joe Dunigan (4-for-10, HR, 3 RBI), Russell Raley (5-for-13, RBI, 2B, run) and Steven Guerra (1-0, 6 IP, one earned run, BB, SO) were named to the 2005 Coca-Cola Classic All-Tournament Team that consisted of 12 members from the four participating schools. Raley and Guerra played key roles in the Sooners victory over South Alabama while Dunigan hit his fi rst career home run (a three-run shot) against Gonzaga in game one of the tournament KIA BASH After winning the event in impressive fashion in 2004, OU came away with a 1-2 record in this year s tournament. OU opened the weekend with a come-from behind victory over UCLA (7-2) but then went on to drop consecutive games to Cal State Fullerton (7-0) and Nevada (14-10). Junior Ryan Rohlinger was impressive over the tournament, batting.538 with two RBI. Rohlinger recorded seven hits overall to extend his streak of multi-hit games to four. Junior Will Savage was also stellar in the three contests, Savage made two relief appearances and allowing zero runs over 6.2 innings pitched. He also recorded two strikeouts and did not walk a single batter RECRUITING CLASS The program announced in December the signing of 12 new talents during the early signing period which ended earlier this week. The new class is compiled mostly with players coming from two-year colleges as nine of the prospects hail from the junior college ranks. The Sooners also continued to recruit strongly within the Oklahoma high school system as they picked up three of Oklahoma s top prep players.
