Eck Stadium (7,851) MAVS TRAVEL TO FACE NO. 22 WICHITA STATE After opening its first 10 games in the friendly confines of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, UTA baseball will hit the road for a three-game weekend series at No. 22 Wichita State, with first pitch in the series opener on Friday slated for 6 p.m. CT at Eck Stadium. The series will resume on Saturday at 2 p.m. and conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on goshockers.com. UTA (4-6) will be facing off with the tradition-rich Shockers in its final non-conference weekend tune-up before Sun Belt Conference play starts next weekend. The Mavs are coming off a series loss last weekend vs. Horizon League frontrunner Wright State, winning the middle game of the series, before suffering a 9-1 loss vs. Baylor at Globe Life Ballpark in Arlington on Tuesday. QUICK NOTES Darin Thomas was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in On Saturday, Thomas won his 300th career game to rank second in UTA history. Senior RHP Daniel James is on the watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, given to the nation s top relief pitcher. Junior CF Noah Vaughan hit three homers with a triple last week, including bombs in back-to-back games vs. TCU and Wright State. Senior RHP Trae Patterson was a selected to the 2018 preseason All-Sun Belt Conference team. He led the league in innings pitched in his debut year in Senior 1B Omar Salinas belted 10 homers on the road amongst the 11 homers he hit in Salinas leads UTA with six two-out hits and four two-out RBI in He has reached base safely in 56 of his 60 career starts. Defensively, UTA has fielded.973 with 13 double plays and sports a 6.30 team ERA in 90 innings, walking 45 and striking out 47. At the dish, UTA has been paced by a.500 average from Phil Berthiaume. Noah Vaughan has hit.333 with a double, two triples, three homers and eight RBI. Josh Minjarez has hit.289 with a homer and seven RBI, Christian Hollie and Omar Salinas have each hit.278 and RJ Williams has batted.220. Will Olson has cranked a pair of homers.. SCOUTING THE SHOCKERS Wichita State (9-2) is ranked as high as No. 22 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, also checking in No. 26 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. The Shockers are coming off a three-game series win over Nebraska at Eck Stadium and suffered a narrow 2-1 loss in midweek play on Wednesday to Oral Roberts. The Shockers have hit.269 as a team in 2018, owning a.467 slugging and a.371 on-base percentage. WSU has belted 16 homers in 11 games, stealing 16 bases. Defensively, WSU has fielded a robust.988, turning eight double plays and throwing out four of nine would-be basestealers. On the mound, Wichita State has a strong 3.64 team ERA, fanning 110 and walking just 37 in 99 innings. At the dish, Wichita State is led by Alec Bohm, a reigning national player of the week. DANIEL JAMES ON RELIEVER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST After leading the Sun Belt Conference with 13 saves in 2017, UTA senior right-hander Daniel James has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Watch List, given annually to the top reliever in college baseball. James, a native of Lubbock, Texas, had a historic 2017 season for the Mavericks despite missing the first three weeks of the year after offseason hip surgery. James returned with a flourish to own the second-most saves in UTA single-season history (13). He worked 28.1 innings, allowing only 25 hits and seven walks, fanning 23. James saved 11 of his games in Sun Belt play and ranked second in UTA history in single-season saves and career saves (16). A 6-foot-4, 215-pounder, James is the only pitcher in the Sun Belt Conference to earn a spot on the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List. UTA returns four members of the All-Sun Belt team in 2017, including senior right-hander Daniel James, who paced the circuit with 13 saves as a junior. A native of Sherman, Texas, Olson was named second-team All-Sun Belt as a redshirt sophomore in 2017, making 39 starts behind the plate and hitting.322. He was a steady presence from the left side of the plate, reaching base safely in 44 of his 46 starts. Olson owned a team-high.439 on-base

Behind the plate, Olson threw out eight would-be basestealers. Patterson, a native of Haslet, Texas, went 7-4 with a 2.75 ERA in his UTA debut season after transferring from North Central Texas, Kansas State and Cisco. He posted a 6-2 mark and a 2.59 ERA in conference play, leading the team in innings (98.1). Patterson spun 11 quality starts as a junior, including working at least six innings without an earned run in matchups with ULM, Arkansas State and No. 29 Coastal Carolina. A product of Arlington High School, Salinas had a breakout 2017 season as a first-team All-Sun belt selection. He led the Mavs in average (.333), doubles (11), hits (65), runs (45), homers (11), RBI (44), walks (33), slugging (.559 and on-base percentage (.439). Salinas hit.366 in Sun Belt play with 10 of his 11 homers. Salinas reached base safely in 46 of his 50 starts. While playing his home games in massive Clay Gould Ballpark, Salinas hit.286 at home and.378 on the road. He tallied two four-hit games, five games of at least three RBI and totaled two multi-homer games. MAVS PICKED SECOND IN SUN BELT WEST IN PRESEASON A year after claiming the Sun Belt Conference Western Division Title, UTA baseball has been picked to finish second in the division in 2018 by the league coaches. UTA, which went in Sun Belt play last year, earned two first-place votes in the West and was picked to finish second behind Louisiana. The Mavs set a program record with a 17-8 road mark, including a school-record 12-3 record in road conference games. UTA moved into the top-25 poll for two consecutive weeks, ranking as high as No. 23 by Collegiate Baseball. It marked UTA s first national ranking since UTA won 10 consecutive league games, tying the school record, also set in 1992, 2006, 2014 and UTA won its first western division title in its brief history in the Sun Belt. The Mavs reached 30 wins for the 25th time in program history and the sixth time under Coach Darin Thomas. UTA won 30 or more games for the second consecutive year, a first since The Mavs swept No. 20 Louisiana, the first sweep over the Ragin Cajuns in program history and UTA s first series win over ULL since UTA set a new program record with a 5-4 record vs. top-25 teams, the most wins in a season over ranked teams in school history. The Mavs earned ranked midweek wins over No. 4 Texas Tech and No. 23 Texas A&M. UTA boasted two of the top attendances in school history, including setting a new Clay Gould Stadium record with 2,008 fans vs. No. 1 TCU on Feb. 21. The Mavs had the second-most saves in single-season history (18). After starting 2-7 to open the year, UTA went over the last three months of the year. UTA ranks as the third most successful program in Sun Belt Conference play since joining the league in Overall, UTA has the fourth-most wins of any team in the league since UTA is over the last four years when holding an eighth-inning lead, including 30-1 in 2017.

7 Awards Coach Darin Thomas was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, the first UTA skipper honored since Butch McBroom in o Thomas has the best conference coaching record in program history (.562), ranking just behind McBroom with a.514 overall winning percentage.
