1 LADY TIGERS SOFTBALL TEXAS SOUTHERN Record: (15-2 SWAC) Head Coach: Worley Barker 9th season, 9th at TSU ( ) LADY TIGERS SET TO MAKE FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE The Texas Southern Lady Tigers softball made history last week as the program captured their first SWAC title in over a decade. TSU will look to continue making history this weekend as they travel to participate in the NCAA Regional hosted at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Led by ninth year head coach Worley Barker Texas Southern has been the class of the conference virtually dominating league play during the regular season. TSU went an impressive 15-2 during the regular season while making an undefeated run in the SWAC Tournament going 3-0. The Lady Tigers will face Mississippi State in the opening game of the NCAA Softball Tournament. After wrapping up a historic run at the SWAC Tournament TSU second baseman Thomasina Garza was named the Most Valuable Player. In all a total of nine Texas Southern student-athletes were named to the all-conference team headlined by outfielded Krystalani Yockman who was named Freshman of the Year. The University was established in 1927 as the Houston Colored Junior College. On March 3, 1947 the state declared it to be the first state university in Houston. The institutions name was changed to Texas Southern University in 1951 LAST OUTING DECATUR, Ala. - Texas Southern scored four runs in the sixth inning to capture its first SWAC Softball Tournament championship with a 6-3 win over defending champions Mississippi Valley State at Wilson Morgan Park on Sunday. With the game tied at one heading into the bottom of fifth, TSU (31-18) took the lead when pinch runner Tiffany Marshall scored on a single by SWAC Co Freshman of the Year, Krystalani Yockman, to go out in front, 2-1. In the sixth with one out, Brianna Parker drove in Jessica Miller on a ground-out fielder's choice to the shortstop to spark the Lady Tigers. With Princess Daniels at third, and Chelsea Guenther at second, Thomasina Garza picked up a walk to load the bases. Garza finished 1-of-2 at the plate with a run scored. She was named tournament MVP after recording three home runs, a double, and nine RBI. She hit.538 in four games while scoring five runs. Yockman singled again to score Daniels before Briana Simpson slapped a double to drive in a pair of runs to extend TSU's lead, 6-1.Miller, Daniels, and Yockman registered multiple hits for the Lady Tigers. Miller was perfect at the plate with a run scored, Daniels went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Yockman hit 3-of-4 with two RBI. Simpson finished with two RBI on one hit. Madison Staton (12-6) picked up the win throwing six innings. She gave up five hits, three earned runs, while recording four strikeouts. Staton finished with a tournament high, 10 strikeouts through four games. In the seventh, MVSU (14-16) began to rally and posted a threat after Omeshia Moffett doubled to left field. Natalia Covarrubias followed with a double to drive in Moffett before Sammantha Jimenez came in relief for Staton. Brandi Williams singled to left center to keep the MVSU alive, with no outs, scoring Covarrubias to close the gap, 6-3. On the next at bats, Jimenez forced a fly out, follow by a strike out and ground out to the mound, to seal the game. "This is truly a great feeling," said TSU head coach Worley Barker. "We've been playing our best softball the past couple of weeks. I'm extremely proud of this group of young ladies.

4 Head Coach Worley Barker Worley Barker has been one of the most successful head coaches in the Southwestern Athletic Conference during the past several seasons. The 2014 season has undoubtedly been the most successful of his nine year tenure as Texas Southern captured the schools first title in softball in over a decade. Barker led the Lady Tigers softball team to an impressive record marking the second consecutive season TSU has finished with a 30+ win season. During the 2013 season TSU won the SWAC Western Division title and also featured the leagues Player of the Year in Thomasina Garza. In 2013 TSU swept all conference opponents during the regular season. For his teams outstanding play Barker was selected as the SWAC Coach of the Year. Barker produced one of his best team at TSU in 2010 as the Tigers won the SWAC West Division for the first time since Texas Southern went overall, 13-4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 2010, marking the first time in 10 years TSU had won 20 games. In his first season with TSU, Barker s team went in the conference to finish second in the SWAC West Division. In his second season, the Tigers finished in third place in the SWAC West Division, which earned TSU its second consecutive trip to the conference tournament. The Tigers went 1-2 in the 2006 league tournament. Barker is no stranger to competitive fastpitch softball or to success. He is originally from Lake Charles, La., but was raised in Houston. Barker graduated from M.B. Smiley High School in 1982, where he played football and baseball. Barker s baseball career continued beyond high school with an athletic and academic scholarship to Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas. He graduated with honors with a BBA degree in Business Administration in Barker later earned his MBA degree in finance from Prairie View A&M University in Through his high school and college career, Barker received several honors and awards such as being named to various alldistrict, all-conference, and all-tournament teams. Additionally, he received numerous all-academic awards. Barker brings a positive can-do attitude to the Lady Tigers program. He came to Texas Southern with several years of coaching experience as well as many years of working with young athletes during camps, clinics and individual lessons. Barker has two daughters, Brittany and Allyson.
