The Panthers are the #4 seed in the West and will face #1East seed and Eastern Division champion Alabama State Wednesday evening. #2 West Seed Grambling State and #3 East seed Miss. Valley State round out the PVAMU side of the bracket (page 2). CHAMPIONSHIP SPRING FOR PANTHER ATHLETICS Since April 18, Prairie View A&M has won SWAC championships in men's golf, men's outdoor track, and women's softball. (more info page 3). OPENING GAME REMATCH The Panthers will face the Hornets for the second time this season in a rematch of the 2018 season opener in the Andre Dawson/MLB Urban Invitational at Wesley Barrow Stadium. PVAMU led 5-2 after six innings but lost in an 8-7 thriller back on Feb. 16. Darrien Williams pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, no earned runs with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Ezekiel Bear went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Calvin Rucker and Andrew Garcia each had two hits. TOURNAMENT MATCHUPS PVAMU will face Alabama St. (27-20, 18-6) in the opening round for the second straight season and fifth year in the last seven tournaments. The Panthers have played the Hornets seven times in tournament play over that period, winning three times. In seasons that Prairie View A&M defeated Alabama State, the Panthers went on to the championship game (SWAC Champs 2012, SWAC runners-up 2013) Panthers 14-4 (7) (1st Round) 2013 Alabama St (7) (1st Round), Panthers 2-1 (Semi # 1), Panthers 8-3 (Semi #2) 2015 Alabama St. 5-4 (1st round) 2017 Alabama St (1st round), Alabama St (7) (Semifinals) The Panthers went 3-3 against #2 West Seed Grambling (23-24, 14-10) this season, as PVAMU lost two out of three at Grambling, and won 2 out of 3 at home. In last year's tournament, Prairie View A&M defeated Grambling 8-6 in a Thursday elimination game en route to the semifinals. Prairie View last faced Miss. Valley State in the 2012 SWAC Tournament Championship game, won by the Panthers 7-4. GRADUATE PANTHERS RHP Darrien Williams (political science) and 2B Jalyn Baker (kinesiology) were among 36 PVAMU student-athletes who received degrees during commencement exercises this past Saturday at Panther Stadium. The event is named after Baseball Hall of Famer and HBCU product Andre Dawson, who played at Florida A&M before embarking on a 21-year pro career with the Montreal Expos (now Washington Nationals), Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, and Florida Marlins. YEAR THREE OF RIGGINS ERA Former minor league baseball player Auntwan Riggins is in his third season leading Panther baseball. Hired in August 2015, Riggins led Prairie View A&M to 10 wins in year one, and doubled the Panthers' win total last season, the highest since PVAMU finished third in the SWAC's Western Division in 2017 and advanced to the SWAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since (bio pg. 6) KNOCKING ON VICTORY'S DOOR The Panthers have knocked on victory's door more times than the record would indicate in 2018, only to be denied in tough situations. PVAMU has lost six times when leading or tied after eight innings, and is 1-4 in extra inning contests. Prairie View A&M is 7-9 in games decided by two runs or less. 3 Panther Athletics Championship Spring MEN'S GOLF 1st SWAC title since 1979 The Prairie View A&M men s golf team won the SWAC Golf Championship for the first time since 1979 in a dominant 54- hole performance at Oak Wing Golf Club in Alexandria, La. April The Panthers led after every round of the three-day, 54-hole championship, shooting a team score of 891, pulling away to win by 31 strokes ahead of six-time defending champion Alabama State (922). PVAMU competed in the NCAA Tournament in Norman, Okla. May MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK 1st SWAC title since 2008 The PVAMU men s track team rallied in dramatic fashion to win its first SWAC outdoor track and field championship since 2008 on May 6 at the PVAMU Track Stadium. The Panthers had clutch performances to rally from a 17-point deficit entering the final day to take the title at home, scoring 167 points to move past Alabama State (161) and Jackson State (160). PVAMU has a number of qualifers who will compete in the NCAA Regional May in Sacramento, Ca. SOFTBALL 1st SWAC title since 1998 The PVAMU softball team bounced back from an opening day loss to win six consecutive elimination games in three days, including three on Saturday to win the SWAC Championship in Montgomery, Ala. PVAMU beat Miss. Valley St. (4-3) Thursday, and Alabama A&M (11-2 in 5 inn.) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-0) Friday. Saturday, the Lady Panthers eliminated defending champ and archrival Texas Southern (4-3) before beating Alabama St. twice (5-3, 4-3) on its home field to take the title. PVAMU will play in the College Station Regional of the NCAA Tournament, facing Texas A&M Friday.

6 Auntwan Riggins was named as the seventh head coach in Prairie View A&M baseball history on August 28, In 2017, the Panthers doubled their win total from Riggins' first year at the helm. PVAMU won 20 games last season, the highest win total since Coming from the SWAC Tournament losers' bracket, the Panthers won backto-back elimination games over SWAC Western Division Champion Grambling as well as Alcorn St in advancing to the semifinals for the first time since In his first year at the helm, Riggins led the Panthers to a season split of the six-game series against archrival and 2015 SWAC Champion and 2016 conference runner-up Texas Southern, along with a victory over Incarnate Word of the Southland Conference. Riggins came to Prairie View A&M from the Warriors Baseball Academy in Houston, Texas. Prior to that, he spent 13 years with Houston's Proway Baseball Academy as one of its premier instructors and coaches. Both academies train baseball players ages 7 through 18 years old, and can claim numerous players who went on to play NCAA Division Head Coach Auntwan Riggins I baseball among their alumni. Riggins has provided individual instruction to numerous players who have gone on to successful NCAA Division I careers, some of whom were also drafted professionally. His most recent alumnus to be drafted was Kyle Survance, who played collegiately at the University of Houston. Survance was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the eighth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft. Another player Riggins coached was Spencer Dennis, whom Prairie View A&M fans may remember as a key player on the Panthers' 2007 SWAC championship team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. Riggins, an East Texas native and product of Houston s Madison High, is no stranger to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, having played collegiately at Texas Southern, concluding his career in In two seasons with the Tigers, he hit.364, and knocked 19 doubles, 11 triples, and six home runs. In 1997, he was named the SWAC's Newcomer of the Year after hitting.341 with five home runs. At the conclusion of his junior season in 1998, Riggins was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He reached the AAA level in 2001 while playing with the Portland Beavers in the San Diego Padres organization. After he retired from professional baseball, Riggins eventually returned to Texas Southern to receive his degree, graduating from the school in Riggins and his wife of 10 years, Deveka, have two daughters, Masyn and Hudsyn.
