Austin and ULM, Louisiana Tech continues its road stretch with a three-game Conference USA series against FIU, beginning at 6 p.m. CT Friday at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami, Florida. After the series opener Friday night, LA Tech and FIU will face off at 5 p.m. CT Saturday before wrapping up the three-game set at noon CT Sunday in Miami. LA Tech (19-19, 4-13 C-USA) heads to Miami in search of its first series win in conference play, while FIU is currently ranked eighth in the league standings with an overall record and 8-10 mark in C-USA. The Bulldogs are looking to improve on a 6-12 record on the road. A LOOK AT THE PANTHERS FIU enters the series with an record on its home field, including a 4-5 mark at home in conference. Earlier this week, FIU defeated Palm Beach Atlantic, 18-5, in midweek action in Miami. Prior to Wednesday s win, the Panthers had lost four of its last five, while struggling in its last three C-USA series by losing two of three against UTSA, FAU and WKU the last few weeks. ON DECK The Bulldogs return from Miami Sunday night and will gear up for four straight home games at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, beginning with a 6 p.m. first pitch against Stephen F. Austin Tuesday, April 28 in Ruston. LA Tech defeated SFA, 9-2, on the road this past week in Nacogdoches. 3 VERSUS NOTES SERIES HISTORY Louisiana Tech is set to travel and take on former Sun Belt and current Conference USA foe FIU for just the 16th meeting all-time in the history of both programs. The Panthers currently lead the all-time series, 11-4, over LA Tech after taking two of three from the Bulldogs last season in Ruston in what was the first meeting between both teams as members of C-USA. Prior to 2014, the previous meeting between the Panthers and Bulldogs dates back to when the two teams met at the 2001 Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Lafayette. LA Tech played FIU four times that season, winning 10-7 in the regular season and 5-3 in postseason play. Stark has totaled five doubles, three home runs and 23 runs batted in, as the junior enters the weekend on a 24-game reached base streak. Stark s.475 on base percentage in C-USA play ranks fifth in the league. In the last five games, Taylor Love and Taylor Nichols have combined for 10 hits, three home runs and 12 RBIs to help lead the Bulldogs to a pair of wins over that span. FIU comes into the weekend with a.274 team batting average, which ranks sixth among all Conference USA teams. The Panthers have totaled 57 doubles, six triples and 26 home runs with Brian Portelli pacing the FIU offense through 40 games this season. Portelli enters the series hitting.340 with a team-high 14 doubles and has driven in 32 runs thus far. Edwin Rios is FIU s leading home run hitter with 12 long balls this season and a team-high 37 RBIs. On the mound Louisiana Tech heads to Miami looking to continue its recent trend of good starting pitching with the Bulldogs set to stick with its weekend rotation of Tyler Clancy, Phil Maton and Laetten Galbraith. LA Tech has a team earned run average of 4.43 with Maton leading the way with a 4-1 record and 2.83 ERA. In his last two starts, Maton has held opposing hitting to a.176 batting average, while Galbraith has a 2.08 ERA, two complete games and opponents are hitting just.208 against the senior in his last three starts. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, also known as The Love Shack. Since it s opening in 1971, Tech has posted a home record, good for a.640 win percentage. The Bulldogs 2015 schedule features 29 home games at The Love Shack this season, including a total of eight three-game series against top tier opponents. The Bulldogs will also host five midweek games over the course of the campaign, including three against in-state opponents ULM, Grambling and Northwestern State. J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park is now in its 45th year of service. JUST RUB SOME DIRT ON IT AND WALK IT OFF Through 38 games this season, the Bulldogs have shown they will not shy away from the inside corner of the plate, which is evident by the amount of times LA Tech batters have reached first after being plunked. Having already been pegged 74 times in 38 games, the 2015 Bulldogs are currently ranked fourth in the nation in hit by pitch and are on pace to shatter the all-time record of 86 HBP s in LA Tech is currently getting hit an average of 1.9 times per game, which means the Bulldogs are on pace to be hit over 100 times throughout the season. LA Tech currently leads all Conference USA teams in hit by pitch with 74. In 2014, the Bulldogs were hit just 36 times throughout the entire season. GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES FOR THE BULLDOGS Despite an 0-4 start to the Greg Goff era, the 2015 Bulldogs did not lie down. Instead, LA Tech won seven of its next nine games, including three consecutive series victories, something that has not been done since the 2010 season. The Bulldogs entered the win column on Feb. 18 at McNeese State before returning home for an eight-game home stand against UAPB. Tech won the first two games of the weekend against the Golden Lions before dropping the finale. Déjà vu struck the following weekend when the Bulldogs hosted Oral Roberts and won two straight before falling to ORU on Sunday. LA Tech clinched its third straight weekend series on March 6-7 after defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first two games of the set before rain forced Sunday s finale to be cancelled. Of four non-conference series played in 2015, the Bulldogs have successfully come out on top in three, all of which came on LA Tech s home turf. SIMONEAUX, GALBRAITH ETCH NAMES IN LA TECH RECORD BOOK Several Louisiana Tech players etched their names in the Bulldog Baseball record books last season, but two guys in particular made dents in single-season records in Now a senior, second baseman Thomas Simoneaux surpassed Kevin Brasuell as the career leader in sacrifice hits in a season with 18 sacrifices over the course of Brasuell had 15 sacrifices during the 1980 season with a LA Tech team that made an NCAA Regional appearance following the campaign. In addition to breaking a LA Tech record, Simoneaux ranked fourth in the nation last season in sacrifice bunts, as well as ranking first among all Conference USA hitters. While Simoneaux is breaking records at the plate, senior pitcher Laetten Galbraith also made history on the mound last seaason. The right-hander from Shreveport notched his fifth save of the season on May 4 at Marshall, which tied him for 10th place all-time in LA Tech history for saves in a single season. 5 TEAM NOTES 2015 C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO HATTIESBURG The 2015 Conference USA Baseball Championship will be held at Pete Taylor Park on the campus of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Southern Miss also hosted the 2014, 2009, 2005 and 1996 C-USA Championships at Pete Taylor Park. The Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play and the format returns to two doubleelimination brackets, with a single-elimination championship game. Pete Taylor Park at Hill Denson Field has been the home of Southern Miss baseball since 1984, when the facility was opened. The Pete as it is nicknamed, has seated more than a million fans who have entered its gates. During that stretch, the Golden Eagles have regularly been among the top teams in the nation in baseball attendance. FEELIN THE LOVE! TAYLOR LOVE NAMED PRESEASON C-USA Conference USA announced its 2015 preseason baseball awards on Jan. 28, as chosen by the league s 12 head coaches, and a familiar face made the cut. LA Tech junior second baseman Taylor Love was selected to the 14-member preseason All-Conference USA team after leading the Bulldogs in almost every offensive category last season, including batting average (.320), hits (56), runs (24), doubles (12) and stolen bases (11). Love represents the Bulldogs as one of five league infielders chosen for the preseason team, while LA Tech was chosen to finish 12th in the league standings after posting a overall record in its first season as a member of Conference USA in TECH TO BATTLE 2014 NCAA REGIONAL CONTENDERS In 2015, the Bulldogs will face off against a total of four teams that participated in postseason play last season, with Southeastern Louisiana, Arkansas, Rice and Old Dominion all making appearances in NCAA Regionals a year ago. To make things tougher for LA Tech, the Bulldogs will have to face off against all four of those teams on the road in three weekend series and one midweek contest at Arkansas. LA Tech s signing class now has a total of 14 student-athletes, including five infielders, five pitchers, two outfielders and two catchers, all of which will enroll at LA Tech and be eligible to take the field for the Bulldogs next fall. Twelve of the 14 additions will make their way to Ruston via junior colleges, while two of the signees hail from two of the premier north Louisiana high schools in Benton and West Monroe. 6 TEAM NOTES THE LOVE SHACK UNDERGOES COSMETIC MAKEOVER When Greg Goff became the seventh head coach in Tech history on June 6, 2014, he made it a priority to put his stamp on historic J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park early on. In 11 appearances, the Illinois native has quickly moved into sole possession of second place in program history with 57 punch outs in 2015, a mark that currently ranks third among all pitchers in Conference USA. The senior standout is also making his way up LA Tech s career innings pitched list as he is currently in second place with innings pitched in his Bulldog career. With a win over UAB on April 18, Maton is now tied with Buddy Aulds for ninth place in career wins with 21 victories in four years. After an impressive start early in the 2015 campaign, Maton has a realistic chance to continue to move up the records before his decorated Bulldog career comes to an end. When Greg Goff took over the program in early June, the 11-year coaching veteran made it his mission to sign a sponsorship deal for the Bulldogs equipment and apparel and the bidding began quickly. After weeks of meeting with several vendors, Adidas offered Goff and the Bulldogs a deal they could not refuse. Goff comes to Ruston after spending seven years as the head baseball coach at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., where he amassed an impressive record of in his time at the helm of the Camels program, including recording three straight 40-win seasons. In 2014, Goff and his team captured the Big South Tournament Championship, which led to Campbell s first NCAA Regional appearance in 24 years. In the team s regional appearance, Goff and his team defeated Conference USA s Old Dominion for the program s first ever win in an NCAA Regional. The 21-year coaching veteran led Campbell to its third straight 40-win season in 2014, as the Camels joined LSU, Florida State, Oregon, Oregon State, Louisville, South Carolina and Rice as the only NCAA Division I baseball programs with at least 40 victories in each of the last three years ( ). From 2012 to 2014, Goff led the Camels to their only 40-win seasons in program history, which gave the Jackson, Tenn., native 131 wins in just three years. Prior to his seven years at Campbell, Goff spent four seasons as the head coach at the University of Montevallo, a Division II program in Alabama, where he led his squad to a (.644) mark. In his final two seasons with the Falcons, Goff s teams set the school record for wins in back-to-back seasons, with 43 victories in 2006 and 47 in He led Montevallo to its first ever NCAA Division II College World Series in 2006, where his team finished third and claimed the Southeast Region Championship. Before spending 11 years on the head coaching circuit, Goff led the nationally ranked Kentucky Wildcats as the pitching coach for four seasons from 1999 to He helped guide Kentucky to 38 victories in 2000, which marked a school record for wins in a season at the time. In all, Goff spent a total of 10 years as an assistant coach and began his collegiate coaching career in 1993 at his alma mater, Delta State, as a graduate assistant for DSU s baseball team. Goff was promoted to full-time pitching coach for the Delta State Statesmen heading into the 1997 season. In his time as an assistant, Goff coached 23 professional draft picks, eight All-Americans, 25 all-conference performers and had two players awarded the Dick Howser National Pitcher of the Year. During his playing days, Goff pitched for Jackson State Community College, where he earned his associate s degree in He then spent time on the mound at Delta State where he earned both his bachelor and master s degrees in 1994 and 1996, respectively.
