The Dawgs and Lady Vols open their 14th SEC seasons with a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams close the series Wednesday with another 4 p.m. first pitch. Tennessee leads the overall series 23-13, but the Bulldogs have won three of the last five meetings, including two of three games last season in Knoxville. In 2008, the two squads split a Saturday doubleheader before rain washed out State's home finale. State enters the weekend riding the momentum of four-straight wins in the Bulldog Classic played at the MSU Softball Field. The tournament sweep moved Mississippi State to 13-6 overall. DAWGS SOLID AT HOME Despite suffering its first home loss of the year Wednesday against No. 7 Michigan, Mississippi State has been stellar at the MSU Softball Field this season, compiling an 8-1 record this season. Going back to the 2009 campaign, the Dawgs have now won 18 of their last 21 home contests.

Since starting SEC play in 1997, the Bulldogs are 5-8 all-time in conference home openers and in overall league lid-lifters. State has compiled a 3-4 mark when raising the curtain on SEC play under head coach Jay Miller. QUICK TURN-AROUND Following Wednesday's series finale with Tennessee, the Bulldogs will fly across the country the following day to take part in the Bayer Cropscience Classic in Fresno, Calif. State will play five games over the weekend, taking on Colorado State on Friday, Georgetown and East Tennessee State on Saturday, and Cal State Northridge and host Fresno State on Sunday. The Bulldogs are hoping this season's trip to California will mirror their last trip that saw the 2008 squad go 5-0 at the Cathedral City Kick-Off. MSU is 7-3 in its last two treks to the state and 8-7 overall under Miller. SCORING EARLY KEY TO SUCCESS Mississippi State's offense has done a nice job staking the pitching staff to early leads. The pitching staff, likewise, has been solid at holding those leads. The Bulldogs have put the first run on the scoreboard in 14 of the 19 games this season, compiling 12-2 tally in those contests. MSU has also done a nice job of keeping the lead after scoring in the first inning, compiling a 10-2 record when plating a run in the opening frame. PILING UP THE HITS, WINS The more hits, the better the chance of winning. That has held true for Mississippi State this season as the Dawgs are 10-1 when outhitting their opponent compared to 1-4 when being out-hit. State is 2-1 when both teams tally identical hit totals. BAINBRIDGE LOOKS TO REPEAT Junior second baseman Ali Bainbridge would like to see a repeat of the success she has enjoyed against Tennessee so far in her career. Last season, the Vestavia Hills, Ala., hit the game-winning, three-run home run in the sixth inning of Sunday's rubber game. That big hit came after she lined the walk-off base hit in the opening game of the 2008 series. DAWGS DOMINATE CLASSIC Last weekend, Mississippi State won the Bulldog Classic for the eighth time in the event's 10-year history. State has dominated the tournament, posting a 38-6 record. They have been even better under Miller, tallying a 25-1 mark in five years and a 16-0 tally the past four seasons. ESPN.COM/USA SOFTBALL TOP 25 March 2, Record Pts. Pvs 1. The Kapolei, Hawaii, native factored into the winning run in three of MSU's four games, driving in the game-winner once and scoring it twice, including in Sunday's championship game win against Troy. Smith earned the honor despite having her hit streak halted at seven games, one shy of her career high. SMITH SIZZLIN' AT THE PLATE The lone freshman named All-SEC last season, Smith has been batting at a.446 clip including three doubles, a triple, and a team-high four home runs and 19 RBI. One of her four home runs was her first career grand slam. The bases-clearing roundtripper capped a 4-for-5, five-rbi outing in the Dawgs' 13-3 win over Oregon State at the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas. The four hits matched her personal best, while the five RBI are a career high. The grand slam was the 13th in school history and the first since Jessie Bailey hit one against Louisiana-Monroe last Feb. 7. BRAMLETT CONTINUES TO SHINE Chelsea Bramlett earned all-tournament honors for the second-straight weekend after she hit.556 (5-for-9) with an RBI, six runs scored and seven stolen bases in the Bulldog Classic. Bramlett's stellar weekend pushed her over the.500 mark batting and put her into second place in the SEC behind Tennessee freshman Raven Chavanne. Her 30 hits put her just one back of Chavanne for the conference lead, and she sits atop the league with LSU's Kirsten Shortridge for the steals lead with 20. HARD TO CATCH Bramlett has stolen seven bases in back-toback weekends, giving her 20-straight successful steals to open the year. Going back to last season, she has swiped 28 bases without being thrown out. The last time she was unsuccessful in stealing a base was Apr. 22 against Auburn. Her 28-consecutive stolen bases rank one back of former All-SEC standout Hayle Guess for third all-time. RACKING UP THE HITS Bramlett's four-hit weekend extended her current hit streak to 16 games, matching her career high. During the current streak, she has tallied multiple hits 10 times, including seven of the last 11 games. She now has 291 hits for her career, putting her just one back of Iyhia McMichael for third place in school history. BRAMLETT EARNS SEC HONOR Bramlett's stellar play during the Leadoff Classic earned her SEC Player of the Week honors. It was her second time to earn the honor. The first came after State's perfect run through the Cathedral City Kickoff to open the 2008 campaign. The Cordova, Tenn., native, who was named to the Leadoff Classic all-tournament team, hit.667 on the weekend, adding a double, a triple, three RBI and five runs scored. She was also a perfect 7-for-7 on the bases. 6 8-TIME NCAA REGIONAL PARTICIPANT PRESEASON ALL-SEC Bramlett has already started compiling the honors this season. She entered the season's opening weekend having earned a spot on the SEC's Preseason Softball Team. The Cordova, Tenn., native claimed her third-straight selection to the team, garnering the award each year it has been awarded. AIMING FOR TOP OF THE CLASS The same day Bramlett was tabbed the catcher on the SEC's Preseason Softball Team, she was also named one of 30 candidates for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. State's first candidate for the award, Bramlett is one of just five Southeastern Conference players among the 30 selections for the honor which recognizes community, classroom excellence, character and competition. A national panel will select the 10 finalists in late March, and the winner will be selected from a national ballot. LOOKING TO GO OUT ON TOP Bramlett enters her senior season looking to close out her career the school record-holder in a number of offensive categories. The school's lone three-time, first-team all-american sits as State's career batting average leader with a.444 clip that also rates near the top of the alltime SEC career charts. Last season, Bramlett tallied a.486 batting average that ranked fourth nationally and set a conference single-season record. She stole a school-record 54 bases in 2009, and in the process, passed former Bulldog great Iyhia McMichael for the MSU career record. Bramlett currently has 166 stolen bases in her illustrious career. Bramlett's.557 on-base percentage has vaulted her into second on the career list with a.486 tally. IMPRESSIVE DEBUT SEASON Bramlett's SEC Player of the Week honor following the Leadoff Classic was State's second league honor of the early season. Bulldog freshman Kylie Vry earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors after tossing eight hitless innings in two appearances during the season-opening Bulldog Round-Robin. In her first career start (vs. Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 14), Vry threw Mississippi State's first seven-inning no-hitter since Stephanie Comeaux tossed one against Arkansas on March 18, 2006, in, ironically, a 5-0 win. Vry became the fourth MSU freshman to hold a team hitless. The other three to toss a no-no in their first season were Jenny Hehnke (perfect game in 1997), Jennifer Pursell (2000) and Melissa Massey (2002). Vry is the first Bulldog rookie to accomplish the feat in her first start. The Des Moines, Iowa, native claimed Bulldog Classic all-tournament honors last weekend. She picked up two of State's four victories, allowing just two unearned runs and striking out six over 11.0 innings of work. BELL COMES UP BIG After starting the season as one of State's top hitters, Brittany Bell had found herself going through a 1-for-14 stretch. The Brandon, Fla., native, however, hopes her big hit in Sunday's Bulldog Classic championship game starts a turn-around. Bell stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with the game tied 3-3 and proceeded to line a 3-2 pitch into right-center field for the game-winning base hit. The winning RBI was her team-leading fourth of the season. NICE HOMECOMING Junior Courtney Nesbit enjoyed a stellar return to her home state of Georgia a couple of weeks ago. The Acworth native went 6-for-14 at the plate for a team second-best.429 average. She added a huge home run in Saturday's win over Maryland. After the Terps took a 4-3 lead, Nesbit hit a drive to left field that tied the game and set-up the Dawgs' rally that sparked two-straight wins to close the weekend. BIG-TIME BECKER Freshman Stephanie Becker has enjoyed a nice past two weeks. At the Bulldog Classic, Becker shut Troy down the final two innings of Sunday's championship game to clinch the win. That victory came after she closed the month of February by picking up both of State's wins at the Leadoff Classic. Those victories were also the first two wins of her collegiate career. Becker's three wins are second on the squad, and she has a team-low 1.64 ERA and 15 strikeouts. MILESTONE WIN With MSU's Aggie Classic-opening win against Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 19, State head coach Jay Miller claimed his 250th win as head coach of the Bulldogs. The eighth-year head coach has compiled a tally in Starkville. Last season, he passed Kathy Arendsen to become the winningest coach in MSU Softball history. That milestone came after he claimed career victory No. 900 during the 2008 NFCA Leadoff Classic. In his 28th season as a head coach, Miller has claimed the 11th-most victories among active NCAA Division I head coaches with a career tally. His 967 victories place him just 33 wins shy of reaching the 1,000-win plateau. BULLDOG ROUND-ROBIN CHAMPS The Maroon and White hosted the Bulldog Round-Robin for the seventh time in program history and won the tournament for the fourth time. State has compiled a 30-3 all-time mark in the event and an impressive 21-3 tally when playing the event to open the season. The Dawgs went undefeated in the Bulldog Round-Robin for the fourth time in the tournament's seven-year history. BULLDOGS TABBED FOR TV The Southeastern Conference will see a record number of softball games broadcast on television this season. The Bulldogs will be benefitting from the extensive slate, taking the field in front of a television audience twice. Both of MSU's appearances will air on the FSN2 set of channels that include SportSouth, Sun Sports, FOX Sports Southwest, FOX Sports Houston and FOX Sports in Kentucky. State's first appearance will be the Apr. 18 series final against South Carolina in Columbia. MSU's final appearance comes May 2 as the Dawgs close a three-game set with Florida in Starkville in the next-to-last series of the regular season. NEW ADDITION The Bulldogs have a new face on the coaching staff this year, but a familiar one in the SEC coaching ranks. Karen Johns will be working with the Bulldog battery following a stellar coaching career at Florida and Virginia. She is also a member of the United States coaching pool, leading the U.S. to the Pan Am Games Qualifier championship last summer. Johns was also an assistant on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team that won silver in Beijing, China. PATRIOTIC BULLDOGS Johns will once again be joining Mississippi State head coach Jay Miller and senior Chelsea Bramlett in representing the United States this summer. Miller will serve as head coach of the U.S. National Team and Johns will assist him. Bramlett was selected to the roster that will compete this summer. Bramlett and Miller claimed gold medals last summer at the Canada Cup, World Cup of Softball and Japan Cup. Johns, who assisted the 2008 Olympic silver medal-winning team, coached the U.S. to the Pan Am Games Qualifier championship last summer United States National Team Schedule June 16 Team USA vs. USA Futures (exhibition); Canton, Ohio June 17 Team USA vs. USA Futures (exhibition); Ashland, Ohio June 21-July 3 ISF World Championships; Caracas, Venezuela July 7-11 Canadian Open International Championship; Surrey, B.C. July Exhibition Games; Whitehorse, Yukon July World Cup of Softball; Oklahoma City, Okla. Aug. 3-9 Japan Cup; Sendai City, Japan FANTASTIC FRESHMEN State's 2009 signing class that consisted of Becker, Vry and fellow rookies Jessica Cooley, Shelby Fisher, Erin Nesbit and Chrissie Rovtar were tabbed "Up and Coming" by ESPN Rise in its ranking of the nation's best signing classes. DAWGS TO SEE A FAMILIAR FACE IN FRESNO This weekend's trip to Fresno will give the Bulldogs an opportunity to face a former teammate Courtney Moore. Moore, who began her career in Starkville last season, is currently hitting.259 with three doubles, two home runs and six RBI over 13 games for Fresno State.
