1 trategic ntermodal ystem Highway s ssessment ntroduction aytona each nternational irport aytona each nternational irport ( is a convenient alternative to the uncertainties of rlando and Jacksonville traffic and it is the "Gateway to entral Florida. n addition, also facilities Foreign rade Zone (FZ # 198 which increases the global competitiveness of companies doing business in aytona each by reducing operating costs associated with international trade. he aytona each nternational irport connector as shown in 1-1 connects to -9, a Florida nterstate Highway ystem facility. o ensure that merging facilities provide additional connectivity to developing economic regions, rather than provide redundancy to hubs, merging facilities can be designated only if they are located greater than miles from the nearest hub of the same type. he minimum size threshold for merging airports is to handle. percent of the nation s total freight or passenger enplanements to be eligible for designation as an merging facility. merging airports must be located in or adjacent to a fast-growing county that ranks among the top 2 percent statewide in terms of population growth over the next 2 years and provide service to clusters of tourism establishments and high-technology businesses. connector meets distance and economic connectivity criteria and is designated as merging facility. xisting onditions he connector is a 2.3-mile segment traversing 92 and Midway venue. and use along the connector is primarily retail and residential as shown in 1-2.
