2 Geography Terms 1. Continent: any of the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America). 2. Hemisphere: a half of the earth, usually as divided into northern and southern halves by the equator, or into western and eastern halves by an imaginary line passing through the poles.

17 Appalachian Plateau Northwestern corner of Georgia (T.A.G. corner: Tennessee, Alabama, & Georgia) Smallest region High plateau between mountains Cooler temps due to elevations over 1800 feet. Limestone caves, forests, mountains, canyons Economy: Limited agriculture due to poor soil. Most important are tourism and Forestry. Also mining: limestone and coal. Cloudland Canyon, Rock City, Lookout Mountain, Sand Mountain

18 Valley and Ridge North Georgia between the Appalachian Plateau and Blue Ridge Second smallest region Geography: Long parallel ridges separated by open valleys with elevations of 100 or 1600 feet. the valleys have fertile soils with 4% of the valleys being used for farming or pasture land, limestone, caves. The valley s have for centuries been used for travel. Economy: agriculture, forestry products, and manufacturing: carpet and other textiles. Theres is also some mining such as chert and other aggregate (gravel). Dalton, Calhoun, Rome, Cartersville

19 Blue Ridge Northeastern corner of Georgia Highest mountains in Georgia (2000 to 5000 feet) with the coolest temps and the most precipitation of any region. Several of the states major rivers begin in the Blue Ridge. Geo: limestone, sandy loam, gold, marble, waterfalls Economy: agriculture: Apples! Tourism, forestry products, and mining: gold and marble. Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Helen, Brasstown Bald, Dahlonega, Amicalola Falls

20 Piedmont North central Georgia. Covers 30% of the state. Second largest region, largest population: well over half of Georgia s 10.3 million people live in the Piedmont s cities Foothills, rolling hills, shallow rivers with rapids and waterfalls. Red clay, granite Economy: business, industry, transportation, forestry products, agriculture, and tourism. It has also become the center of Georgia s growing TV, movie, and music industry. Atlanta, Columbus, Macon, August, Stone Mountain

21 Costal Plain Southern part of the state. Largest region: covers 60% of Georgia. Has two sections; upper (western section) and lower (eastern section) Warmest temps. Flat land, pine forests, swamps, marshes, and close to 100 miles of coast line on the Atlantic Ocean. Sandy clay soils Economy: agriculture: peanuts, peaches, Vidalia onions, pecans, etc Tourism, shipping, forestry products, commercial fishing. Savannah, Brunswick, Okefenokee Swamp, barrier islands

22 Was once the shore line The fall line physiographic border between the piedmont and coastal plain regions. The name derives from the river rapids and falls that occur as the water flows from the hard rocks of the higher piedmont onto the softer rocks of the coastal plain. Settlers and later industry would use the waterfalls for power. The cities along the fall line became the state s first industrial towns. The line is the northern most point you can easily travel by boat on many of the rivers because of the shoals, rapids, and falls. 3 major cities on the fall line: Columbus Macon Augusta

24 A fact about Georgia s lakes All of Georgia s major lakes are manmade. All these lakes were built in the 1900 s. Carters lake opened in Most of Georgia s lakes were created to control flooding, product hydroelectric power, and store water.
