3 Chapter 1 Lesson 1 Where is Florida? Essential Question: Why might you need to find out where a place is located? A continent is different from a hemisphere because a continent is a large land area and a hemisphere is half of the Earth, which includes continents. Florida is located in the Southeast region of the United States. The two main parts of Florida are the Panhandle and the peninsula. The two main parts of Florida are the Panhandle and the peninsula. Three different ways to describe Florida s location are that is south of Georgia, it is north of Cuba, and west of the Atlantic Ocean.

Being almost surrounded by water affects Florida by making us a target for hurricanes. This is because they come from the Atlantic Ocean and right to our coast. 5 Chapter 1 Lesson 2 Florida s Land Essential Question: What does the land look like where you live? The two main kinds of land found in Florida are lower lands called lowlands, and higher lands and hills, called highlands. The two regions that are part of the larger Coastal Lowlands region are the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Gulf Coastal Plain. The Marianna Lowlands region is located in the Panhandle. The highest point in Florida is located in the Western Highlands region, near Lakewood, in Walton County. The Everglades is a huge wetland made up mostly of marshes and swamps. Lesson Review Questions 1. Barrier islands are found in the Coastal Lowlands region of Florida.

6 2. Land along the coast is different from most land farther inland, because land along the coast are lowlands and land farther inland are highlands. 3. I live in the coastal lowlands region of Florida. More specifically, I live on the Atlantic Coastal Plain. I like living here because the beach is always close by. 4. The different kinds of land make Florida an interesting place to live in because you can visit other cities and explore the different kinds of land. 7 Chapter 1 Lesson 4 Weather and Climate Essential Question: What is the weather like most of the time where you live? The factors that affect Florida s temperatures are the closeness to the equator, or latitude and its low elevation. Since the southern tip of Florida is close to the equator and it s elevation is low, the temperature is usually warm. Freezing weather in Florida affects the state s crops by damaging or destroying the fruits, vegetables, and plants because they can only grow in warm temperatures. Florida s rainy season is from May through October. A hurricane is a huge storm with high winds and heavy rains. Lesson Review Questions 1. Florida s hurricane season is from June through November each year. 2. The things that affect Florida s climate are the fact that it is close to the equator and also because of it s low elevation.

8 3. Florida s climate attracts visitors from other states and countries because when people think of Florida s climate, they think of sunshine. 4. Where I live there is hardly ever winter weather. It can sometimes get cold, but it is mostly sunny and warm. Other parts of Florida, like the highlands region can get very cold and even snow.
