3 Channel Morphoogy in Carnation Creek: 1.0 Introduction This report describes activities undertaken in 2009 to document channel morphology at Carnation Creek. Stream channel maps are presented in Appendix A and photo-index maps area presented in Appendix B. A DVD containing the photographs and all reduced survey and woody debris data are included in the pocket. 2.0 Methods Field work was undertaken between July 26 and August 5, Three-dimensional points representing the active channel bed and banks were surveyed with a Topcon GTS -226 total station and prism-pole mount. Water depth was measured from gradations on the prism pole. Surveys were tied to benchmarks re-established in Channel maps are presented in Appendix A. Each study area was photographed to supplement channel-mapping activities (approximately 20 frames were taken per site). See Appendix B for a description and location of all photographs. A woody debris inventory was completed for each study area. This included a measurement of both the length and of each log positioned, at least partially, in the active channel (logs with a root wad were noted but the wad was not included in the log length). The position of each log with respect to the active channel was noted (i.e., partially in, entirely in, or entirely above the active channel). Diameter was measured at both ends of each log. Logs measuring < 1.0 m in length (not including stumps or wads) and/or < 0.1 m in average were omitted. Each log was identified by a numbered metal tag (missing or damaged tags were replaced) and sketched onto the study area maps with their respective tag numbers. Logs recruited from overbank and upstream sources, exhumed through erosion/scouring activities, and/or those that could not be identified from the previous years sketch (assuming no previous metal tag was present) were given new tag numbers. The suffix - 9 was used on all new tags to denote the 2009 survey period. 3.0 Maintenance General maintenance was completed in all study areas. This included flagging, marking and painting all new hubs and, where required, re-flagging existing hubs. In addition, maintenance activities included replacing any unstable wooden hubs and re-establishing cross sections where hubs had been lost. 4.0 Error Analysis The surveys in each study area were closed by a connecting traverse (i.e., the survey was opened and closed on different known points). Closing errors depend on both the quality of the survey undertaken with the total station this year and the quality of the previous survey undertaken to establish the opening and closing elevations. Closing errors for 2009 were < ± 0.03 and 0.02 m in horizontal and vertical precision for all study areas. 5.0 Recommendations All hubs were easily identified during this survey period. A continued maintenance program should remain in effect consisting of ribbon tagging, marking and spray painting (where 3
4 Channel Morphoogy in Carnation Creek: necessary). Three to four hubs in each study area should also be converted into permanent bench marks (used to orient the total station). 6.0 Certification This data report entitled Channel Morphology in Carnation Creek: has been prepared by: (Original signed and sealed hardcopy held on file) Stephen Bird, M.Sc., P.Geo. 4
