2 What is the ACPF? Development began in 2011; the ACPF has three components: Unifying concept for water quality management in agricultural watersheds Consistent input databases Land Use and field boundaries USDA/NRCS Soil Survey data (gssurgo) High resolution elevation data hydro-modified by user ArcGIS toolbox that identifies a menu of possible locations for conservation practices Within fields Below fields Riparian stream side

4 The Agricultural Conservation Planning Database Developed a extensive high-resolution database specifically for agricultural conservation planning Enables field-level analysis and evaluation Includes access to pertinent data themes by HUC12: o Land Use Terrain - Soils Provides a consistent structure to enable the use of conservation planning tools across the entire database

10 Grassed Waterways Grassed waterways are installed to reduce the risk of concentrated flow (gully) erosion. Although a commonly installed practice, they remain underutilized in many of the country s steeper farmed landscapes.

11 Water and sediment control basins WASCOBS are small embankments built across drainageways in agricultural fields. This practice can reduce sediment and phosphorus loads, attenuate peak runoff discharge, and reduce risk of gully formation

12 Contour Buffer Strips Contour buffer strips are strips of perennial vegetation planted along topographic contours. They act to reduce sheet and rill erosion. Research has shown benefits of reduced runoff volume and improved water quality.

13 Controlled Drainage Controlled drainage allows landowners to control the water table within flat portions of their fields, lowering nitrogen loads by reducing overall drainage volume

14 Nutrient Removal Wetlands Nutrient-removal wetlands help mitigate the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone. In Iowa, this practice is being encouraged through the USDA under a Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP). Wetland Pool Vegetated Buffer Drainage Area Sample Points

15 Denitrifying Bioreactors Denitrifying bioreactors typically comprise a buried bed of woodchips that receive a portion of tile drainage flow from an adjoining field. The woodchips provide a carbon source that enables bacteria to naturally remove nitrogen from subsurface water.

16 Saturated Buffers Saturated buffers have control structures that divert outflow, raise the water table, and enhance a buffers ability to naturally remove nutrients.

17 Once we ve run the ACPF.now what? Good question! There is lots of information to consider In addition to ACPF outputs, other data may be brought in too- Existing conservation practices Additional GIS data water bodies, springs, water wells, etc. How can we present this information clearly? To planners To producers To policy makers

21 The story map an idea for presenting ACPF results in a user-friendly way This is where technology and easy to use web apps can be very beneficial!

22 What is a Story Map? An organized presentation of maps with multimedia content including text, images, videos, crowd source apps, and other digital media Online for easy sharing ESRI Story Maps on ArcGIS Online Easy to use with ArcGIS Desktop or Pro Similar interface File format does not change/need altering No coding required

23 Organized User can take it home Additional information may be added

24 How to make a Story Map? Fairly simple 1. Have an ArcGIS Online Account Public vs. Organization 2. Upload files shapefiles, kml, text, images, etc. 3. Create online maps and/or applications 4. Compile all that together and create a Story Map! Variety of templates

25 ArcGIS Online Accounts and Roles Most common are Public and Organization accounts Public accounts are free, but limited. You may use layers that are already hosted on an ArcGIS Server or upload zipped files containing all shapefile components. When using a public account, zipped shapefiles may not contain more than 1,000 features. Organizational accounts are more flexible and user friendly, but have an annual fee. You must be invited to an organization by the organization s administrator (they will create an account for you with a user, publisher, or administrator role). Ex. I have a Publisher account with the Agricultural Research Service Organization

26 Uploading files- Public vs. Organization Account Public Account Steps 1. In ArcGIS, develop a shapefile with <= 1,000 features 2. Send the shapefile to a zipped folder Make sure you zipped ALL the shapefile s mandatory files:.shp,.shx,.dbf, and any optional files:.cpg,.sbx,.sbn,.prj,.xml 3. Log in to your AcrGIS Online account, navigate to My Content 4. + Add Item > From my computer > File: Choose File > select the zipped folder containing your shapefile 5. Title and tag it 6. Add Item Organizational Account Steps 1. Develop shapefiles/feature classes ALL shapefiles/feature classes in current map doc will be uploaded! 2. In ArcGIS, File > Sign In > Log in to your ArcGIS account 3. File > Share As > Service> Publish a service 4. Choose your organization s service and name your service 5. Add information (Item Description is required), check sharing settings 6. Analyze, resolve any issues 7. Publish (it is added to My Content ) You may also share rasters! (Tile Layers)

27 Public vs. Private Content All files, maps, and story maps you upload or create will be private as default To change this, go to My Content, click on of private item Share with the public, groups, or your organization

28 Create Online Map 1. In My Content 2. Create > Map 3. Title and tag it > OK Now you re in the Map Viewer 4. Add > Search for Layers Can search anywhere, search in My Content if you added layers 5. Done Adding Layers 6. Symbolize, adjust transparency, change basemap, clean up pop-up content, and SAVE

29 Create an Application 1. In My Content : Create > Using a Template 2. Select your template > Create WebApp 3. Title and tag it > Done 4. Begin to customize You can change all these things later > 5. Now, add a map! Either one you have built OR Create a map right then and there 6. In the Main Stage, could also add an image, video, or embed a webpage 7. Fill your panel with text, images, videos, and more 8. Save, Add Section, and repeat

39 Uploading raster files- Organization Account 1. In ArcGIS Desktop or Pro, File > Sign In > enter username and password 2. Develop shapefiles/feature classes (unlimited features) or raster datasets and symbolize ALL shapefiles/feature classes in current map doc will be uploaded!! For Tile Layers (raster): 3. Generate tile cache either using (1) Manage Tile Cache tool or (2) Generate Tile Cache Tiling Scheme tool 4. Set location to a local drive, manage mode, data source, and tiling scheme Recommend using ARCGISONLINE_SCHEME if publishing to AGOL 5. Run the Export Tile Cache tool, export cache as TILE_PACKAGE 6. Run the Share Package tool (be logged in to your organization account) 7. Go to that tile package in My Content and publish the package as a tiled map service Be patient- it must build all tiles before you may use it in a map
