QuestUAV British UAV Manufacturer Aircraft designed to carry sensors such as high resolution cameras infra red cameras thermal and video cameras multiple payloads QuestUAV have been operating for five years in Europe QuestUAV is Qualified and licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority most countries see the CAA as a leader in regulatory framework for UAVs Easy launch, easy land, simple automatic flight planning 1
QuestUAV British UAV Manufacturer Meet the owner Business entrepreneur with 45 years aviation experience Former RAF pilot Lives and works in Northumberland Premier UK photographic Award (Fox Talbot) Awards Won the Best of the Best Innovation award in the North East Business Awards 2013 Won Small Business of the Year 2013 Large government grant award to help track fresh water using UAV technology Operations Operations throughout the world including: UK, Germany, Austria, Finland, Eire, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, South America, Canada, Antarctic, Greenland, Svalbard, Bulgaria, Ghana, Mozambique, South Georgia. 2
QuestUAV British UAV Manufacturer Multiple Systems, Multiple Uses: High resolution imagery Observation of inaccessible territory Rapid surveillance deployment Coastal erosion surveys, pollution monitoring Mining and land Surveillance Bunkering and pipeline surveillance General land mapping and city planning Forestry management and recording of deforestation Mapping and growth of Desertification Extensive GIS, research and environmental uses 3
Some of our Clients 4
Low altitude imagery provides High quality data for survey and surveillance Please note that images in this presentation are highly compressed. One single, detailed mosaic can be in excess of 300mb. (Twenty times the size of this whole presentation.) 5
Mining Survey and Assessment Examine in detail what is happening in legal or illegal mines and evaluate volumes and quantities of minerals extracted Launch from safe/covert areas 6
Map and quantify the rapid growth of suburban areas Automatically quantify size and population in new developments Automatically map roads, buildings and boundaries 7
Detect ahead of time where bunkering attack might be likely Zoom in on areas of interest 8
Analyse single images immediately after flight 9
Single images can automatically be built into a large detailed map, correcting all distortions Detailed map Single images 10
Create a 3-Dimensional model for accurate survey work 11
Using the same data make area calculations, map boundaries, define roads, compare with earlier surveys Mosaic of Ind estate Layer in GIS? 12
Why not use Google Earth? Poor image quality Old data (up to 5 years old) Google Earth uses algorithms that distort boundaries for improved ease of viewing Much greater detail from QuestUAV In Nigeria Google Earth is very poor quality Standard UK Quality Google Earth Observe the detail in these locations Road markings Bins 13 Imagery from Google Earth 2013
Why not use Google Earth? Poor Image Quality Old data (up to 5 years old) Google Earth use algorithms that distort boundaries for improved ease of viewing Much greater detail from QuestUAV Standard QuestUAV UK Quality Imagery Google Earth at 400ft Observe the detail in these locations Road markings Bins 14 Imagery from QuestUAV
Google Earth is not ortho-rectified An orthophoto is geometrically corrected so that its scale is uniform. An uncorrected aerial photograph (normal aerial photography) cannot be used to measure true distances. An orthophoto can, as it is an accurate representation of the Earth's surface, having been adjusted for topographic relief, lens distortion, and camera tilt. Google Earth is no good for any scientific work. Example - Google Earth shows slanted and distorted walls QuestUAV shows straight and undistorted walls 15
Typical QuestUAV process from: (1) Orthophoto production, then, (2) DEM production and finally to (3) The Contour Map (1) Orthophoto derived from multiple UAV images 16

A single image at 2000ft can cover 0.5 Sq Km Map desertification using high altitude, long range flights A QuestUAV can fly a distance of up to 80Km in one single flight 19
1. Quantify environmental degradation in both accessible and inaccessible areas using smart technology 2. Identify areas suitable for Carbon Sequestration Large inaccessible waterlogged area 1km x 1km Similar area imaged using infra red highlights invisible information 20
QuestUAV smart technology. Satellites use Multispectral Sensors to evaluate vegetation vigour, disease, dryness or wetness, vegetation type and more. UAVs can now do the same. The pigment in plant leaves, chlorophyll, strongly absorbs visible light (from 0.4 to 0.7 µm) for use in photosynthesis. The cell structure of the leaves, on the other hand, strongly reflects near-infrared light (from 0.7 to 1.1 µm). Generally, the healthier the plant the more near-infrared light wavelengths of light are reflected. 21
Same area - using NDVI False Colour The result makes the high-photosynthesis areas more clear. In this example the high rate of growth is coloured green. 22
1. Use of Ground Control Points (yellow dots) can make surveys more accurate 2. Accurate data like this can be used for many applications 23
1. Quantify deforestation, coastal erosion, gully erosion, effect of landslides to assist planning 2. Encourage political will for positive change, through education Illegal logging and windfall Community education 24
1. Image inaccessible areas in high resolution 2. Monitor coastal erosion, marine infestation and pollution 3. Plan better projects and improve likelihood of success 25
Data from previous slide created as DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and compared with best available UK data. UAV data is ten times more detailed. Square area viewed as DEM using best available commercial data (non UAV) Same area viewed using UAV data hugely increased information Cross sections of the line from each square above. UAV has significantly more data for more accurate planning purposes 26
Example of high profile expedition: NASA, European Space Agency and QuestUAV on Mars Rover Project, mapping hostile desert for high resolution 3d survey. QuestUAV was chosen from all European UAVs as the best solution for this project. 27
