1 MEDICIÓN Y EVALUACIÓN PARA LA TRANSFORMACIÓN ACADÉMICA DE PUERTO RICO, META-PR Fifth Grade English as a Second Language Script for Practice Questions Listening Section Script for 5th Grade English Practice Questions These are the English Listening Practice Questions for 5th grade. In this section, you will show how well you understand spoken English. Listen carefully. Then, choose the correct answer.

2 Listen to a passage about the food chain. You will answer questions 1 through 4 based on this passage. (Woman): All living things are part of nature s food chain. Each stage depends on the next. For example, a bear dies in the forest, and the nutrition in its body goes into the dirt below. In turn, these nutrients help plants grow. A bug flies by and eats the plant s leaves. Next, the bug lands on a pond and a fish gobbles it up. Finally, a hungry bear arrives and eats the fish. The food chain begins again. Now answer the following questions. 05LI0905LI

3 Look for question number 1. Now listen carefully to the question. According to the passage, where does the bug go after eating the plant s leaves? A to the bear B to the pond C into the forest D into the ground Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_2

4 Look for question number 2. Now listen carefully to the question. According to the passage, which detail about the food chain is TRUE? A It usually does not include fish. B It occurs only in spring and summer. C It is a never-ending cycle with no beginning or end. D It explains why there are so many different kinds of plants. Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_3

5 Look for question number 3. Now listen carefully to the question. According to the passage, what happens after a bear eats the fish? A The fish gobbles up the bug. B The bug eats the plant s leaves. C The food chain starts over again. D The nutrients help the plant grow. Choose the letter of the correct answer. PRI LI_3

6 Look for question number 4. Now listen carefully to the question. What is the main idea of this passage? A The food chain has several stages. B The food chain needs bugs to work. C The food chain works only in the forest. D The food chain always involves a bear and plants. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Listen to the passage, the questions, and the answer choices again. (Woman repeats the passage, and the Narrator repeats the questions and the answer choices.) (Pause 5 seconds.) PRI LI_1

7 Listen to a passage about Earth s Moon. You will answer questions 5 through 10 based on this passage. Our Moon is a large space object that orbits Earth. Like Earth, the Moon has mountain ranges and many craters, or holes. At night, the Moon reflects sunlight like a mirror. Although it is close to Earth, our Moon is different from Earth in many ways. Gravity is the force that keeps us on the ground instead of floating off into space. The Moon has gravity, but because it is smaller than Earth, its gravity is weaker. If you were on the Moon, you would weigh less and could jump farther. On the Moon, there is no air to breathe. It is completely silent because there is no air to carry sound. It never rains or snows on the Moon. Astronauts and spacecraft that have explored the Moon have taught us much. Several countries continue to explore our Moon. Now answer the following questions. 12AI0507

8 Look for question number 5. Listen carefully to this sentence from the passage. Our Moon is a large space object that orbits Earth. Which question does this sentence answer? A Why is Earth large? B What does Earth do? C Why is the Moon large? D What does the Moon do? Choose the letter of the correct answer. AI AI0507_4

9 Look for question number 6. Listen carefully to this sentence from the passage. At night, the Moon reflects sunlight like a mirror. Which type of figurative language is used in this sentence? A personification B alliteration C metaphor D simile Choose the letter of the correct answer. AI AI0507_4

10 Look for question number 7. Listen carefully to this sentence from the passage. If you were on the Moon, you would weigh less and could jump farther. Which word sounds the same as weigh but has a different meaning? Choose the letter of the correct answer. A wig B wash C way D weight Choose the letter of the correct answer. AI AI0507_3

11 Look for question number 8. Now listen carefully to the question. Based on the passage, which sentence about the Moon is FALSE? A It has air. B It is large. C It is silent. D It has gravity. Choose the letter of the correct answer. AI AI0507_1

12 Look for question number 9. Now listen carefully to the question. The topic of the passage is how the Moon and Earth A orbit objects. B reflect sunlight. C are similar and different. D are growing and changing. Choose the letter of the correct answer. AI AI0507_3

13 Look for question number 10. Now listen carefully to the question. Based on the passage, which sentence is TRUE? A The Moon is always quiet. B There are storms on the Moon. C The surface of the Moon is smooth. D Only the United States has explored the Moon. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Listen to the passage, the questions, and the answer choices again. (Narrator repeats the passage, questions, and answer choices.) (Pause 10 seconds.) AI AI0507_1
