3 Curriculum Mapping Purpse CONTENT INTEGRATION (SOCIAL STUDIES & SCIENCE) CURRICULUM MAP CANYONS SCHOOL DISTRICT Canyns Schl District s Cntent Integratin curriculum maps are standards-based maps driven by the Utah Cre Standards. Student achievement is increased when bth teachers and students knw where they are ging, why they are ging there, and what is required f them t get there. Curriculum Maps are a tl fr: ALIGNMENT: Prvides supprt and crdinatin between cncepts, skills, standards, curriculum, and assessments COMMUNICATION: Articulates expectatins and learning gals fr students PLANNING: Fcuses instructin and targets critical infrmatin COLLABORATION: Prmtes prfessinalism and fsters dialgue between clleagues abut best practices pertaining t sequencing, unit emphasis and length, integratin, and review strategies SCAFFOLDED INSTRUCTION AND GROUPING STRUCTURES: The rganizatin f a scafflded classrm includes whle grup, small grup (e.g., teacher-led skill-based, cperative learning), partner, and independent wrk where students are prvided supprt twards mastery. As students assume mre respnsibility fr the learning, gradual supprt is decreased in rder t shift the respnsibility fr learning frm the teacher t the students. Canyns Schl District elementary Cntent Integratin maps are created by the CSD Office f Evidence-Based Learning Cntent Integratin-1

4 General Instructins Pacing This curriculum map prvides guidance fr intertwining the Utah Cre Standards fr Scial Studies and Science with the Reading Street cntent. Fllwing the map will allw students t access all cre standards by the end f the year. T supprt students mastery f the standards, a scpe and sequence was develped t address cntent areas. Attending t these standards will allw teachers t fcus instructin fr the given unit and better assess students understanding f each standard. Units The scpe and sequence was crrelated t the Reading Street Unit Theme and Questin where applicable. Each unit represents six weeks f instructin. In mst cases, there are science and scial studies standards that are taught in each unit. Cntent Integratin Instructin During the Science and Scial Studies cntent integratin blck, students will have the pprtunity t learn abut and experience science and scial studies as directed by the Utah State Cre curriculum. Elementary schl students learn science and scial studies best when; they are invlved in first-hand explratin and investigatin and inquiry/prcess skills are nurtured, instructin builds directly n the student s cnceptual framewrk, and when mathematics and cmmunicatin skills are an integral part f instructin. The Cntent integratin time in the ELA Blck deals with integratin f science and scial studies cntent t understand key cncepts, principles, generalizatins, and theries thrugh the integratin f the English Language Arts Standards. The Utah Cre states: By reading texts in histry/scial studies, science, and ther disciplines, students build a fundatin f knwledge in these fields that will als give them the backgrund t be better readers in all cntent areas. Students can nly gain this fundatin when the curriculum is intentinally and cherently structured t develp rich cntent knwledge within and acrss grades. Students als acquire the habits f reading independently and clsely, which are essential t their future success. Optimally, this prtin f the day invlves students reading, writing, listening and speaking abut the tpics they are learning abut in science and scial studies instructin time. Teachers can use this time t prvide backgrund knwledge and learning activities t prepare their students fr their Science/Scial Studies instructin. Ideas and resurces fr integratin can be fund in yur Cntent Integratin Map. Scheduling Suggestins Ideally, the Science and Scial Studies blck will be schedule back-t-back with the Cntent Integratin time in the ELA blck fr a fluid flw frm building backgrund knwledge in the ELA blck t the experiential learning in the Science and Scial Studies blck. If schedule back-t-back, this blck f time can be adjusted s that labratries, mdeling, simulatins, and ther activities that take extended amunts f time can be incrprated in the day. Example Perfrmance Assessment Example perfrmance assessments have been included in the map as ideas n different types f assessments t determine mastery. An example has been listed fr every bjective frm the Utah Science and Scial Studies cre. Guidance fr Integratin Ideas fr hw t incrprate literacy, math, art, and ther standards with the Scial Studies and Science standards have been included in this prtin f the map. Links n where t find resurces and lessn plans have been prvided. Cntent Integratin-2
