3 Glossary Pantanal: Wetland Wonderland Aestivate (verb) To spend a hot or dry period in an inactive or resting state, similar to hibernation. Aquatic (adjective) Living in water or wetland. Cellulose (noun) The main substance in the cell walls of plants, which is used in making various products (such as paper). Crustacean (noun) A type of animal (such as crab or lobster) that lives mostly in water and has a hard outer shell. Dormant (adjective) Inactive, as in a deep sleep, but capable of becoming active at a later time. Fingerling (noun) A small, young fish. Flock (collective noun) A group of birds. Floodplain (noun) An area of low-lying ground next to a river that is often flooded. Gastropod (noun) A type of animal (such as snail or slug) with no spine, a soft body and often a shell. Infrasound (noun) Sound with a wave frequency that is too low (below hertz) to be heard by humans. Marsh (noun) An area near a lake or river that often floods and is always wet. Migratory birds (noun) Birds that move from one region or habitat to another, in a regular, repeated pattern, according to the seasons. Solitary (adjective) Done or existing alone. Suffocate (verb) To die because you re unable to breath. Terrestrial (adjective) Relating to the earth. Vertebrate (noun) An animal that has a backbone and a skeleton. Vibrissae (plural noun) Long, stiff and very sensitive hairs growing around the mouth or elsewhere on the face of many mammals, used as organs of touch. Wetland (noun) A large area of land covered with swamps or marshes.
