2 - Competition between organisms exists in every ecosystem. Organisms are forced to compete against their own species and also different species in order to survive. Adaptations Over Time is the process by which individuals who are better to their environment are more likely to and reproduce than other members of the same species. Causes for Adaptations Among Species: o. o o Variations are different ways a trait can express itself. o Some make individuals fit for survival from predators allowing them to reproduce and pass the favorable trait to their offspring. o Natural Selection by Environment Variations can also allow organisms to become better to survive in a particular climate. o Organisms expressing traits that allow them to survive & reproduce in a particular environment will become the dominate life within the environment. Examples of inherited traits for survival & reproduction (snake) (Mexican Milk Snake) / Poisonous (Skunk & Poison Arrow Frog)

4 Hair projection (Hedgehog quills & Deer Antlers) o Endangered/ Extinctions Organisms that are not able to adapt to their environment could become or extinct. - could become endangered in near future. - at risk of extinction. - a species with no surviving members. o Reasons for Extinctions Introduced species- compete with native species - global warming Biomes and Adaptations o Taiga/ Boreal Forest Biomes: Winters are cold and very snowy & Summers are warm and raining enough to melt all the snow Dominate plants adapt with needle-shaped leaves to reduce water loss by having less surface area. Example: Animals have adapted by, thick fur, hibernating or migrating. o Rain Forest Biomes: Wet, warm biomes that contain the greatest of life on Earth. Plant & animal life adapts in a variety of ways o Desert Biomes: Receive less than 25 cm of rain per year. Hottest temperature on Earth The plants have many adaptations for getting and water (deep roots, needles). Some animals have adapted by being nocturnal, burrowing underground, & being o Aquatic Biomes Adaptations Bio-luminance, webbed feet, slim lined body,

5 The Environmental Protection Agency Needs Your Help! The Earth is changing and we need explorers to help research how the animals are adapting to these changes. Explorer, This is the director of the Environmental Protection Agency. We need your help! We are concerned that the planet Earth is beginning to undergo many changes. We are concerned that our animals have not adapted to meet these changes. Our goal is to make sure that all of the Earth s animals will be able to survive the changes. To do this we need you to research the adaptations of several animals on this planet. You will be working with many other explorers to compete this project and traveling all across the world. The future of our planet and these animals depends on you! Task: The EPA needs you to follow these steps during your exploration: ~the Director of EPA Select 2 animals to research and record the animals and location on your data log. o Research to discover how these animals have adapted for protection, food, and survival. o Pick from the following animals Hammerhead Shark, Gray Wolf, Orca-Killer Whale, Alligator, Anaconda, Elephant, Penguin, Polar Bear, Praying Mantis, Giraffe Create a new species of animals to meet the needs of a specific environment. Write a report about the animal adaptations you have discovered. (Think about the one animal you researched or look at a different animal. Change something about that animal to help them adapt into a different environment. For example, change something about the giraffe to allow it to live in the artic or something about the praying mantis that would help it to protect itself better). Create illustrations for your adaptable animal in the environment, write a description of your adaptable animal, its new environment and how it has adapted.
