Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels Christians Jesus-Fllwers Thse wh trust Jesus fr ur every next mve have the greatest fundatin, based upn the greatest truth and the greatest prmises, fr life! Nt just surviving frm day t day, but thriving under the lve and care f The Gd Wh created us and lves us s much that Gd culdn t lve us mre, and will never ever lve us less! But because f ne f the biggest causes f stress in a teenager s life, that f there never seems t be enugh time t d all that is expected f me and that I want t d, it s hard smetimes t even begin t see hw we culd pssibly thrive under this cnstant pressure we feel. Just think abut it dn t we yuth struggle with lack f time fr things like these belw? (This is just a partial list that yur peers came up with in nly minutes!) Schl (Just thinking f all that schl culd include is a daunting list! Sprts/After schl activities/clubs/hmewrk/etc.) Yuth grup Multiple bligatins (Like, specific examples frm the tw things abve culd lk like: If yu re a musician, yu have frmal rehearsal/classes, practice n yur wn time, auditins, cncerts, etc. Being active as a yuth in yur church ften means wrship, Sunday schl, yuth grup stuff, fundraising, yuth functins beynd lcal church like inter-church, District, and Cnference, vlunteering, missins wrk, etc.) Hme respnsibilities Family/ Spending time with siblings Friends/Scial life Jbs/wrk Hbbies Persnal time (Leisure, Expanding what I knw, Time fr cnversatin) Alng with ur feeling f there s just nt enugh time t d all that is expected f me, we als struggle with the idea that we have t earn everything. And while it is true that we must d things like study and practice and wrk in schl (and many times utside f schl), ne thing we DO NOT have t earn is Gd s lve fr us. Gd has created each persn perfectly t fulfill the part f Gd s plan Gd has fr each persn s life. Yu may say, Oh great, Gd has a plan fr mre fr me t d! But that which Gd has planned fr us t BE and t d Gd knws is that which will bring us tw f Jesus s greatest prmises fr thse wh lve Him and trust Him: COMPLETE JOY and ABUNDANT (JOYFULLY FULFILLING) LIFE! S when we strive t d that which Gd has planned and wishes fr us t d in the ways Gd instructs us, it actually leads us t jy and thriving vs. the stress that trying t achieve everything n ur wn brings. Thriving vs. just surviving nw that sunds pretty gd! 1
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels With this in mind, hpefully yu ll begin t embrace these 3 Great Truths: 1. Gd Lves U! 2. Gd has and knws that which is best! 3. Gd has a unique, amazing, fulfilling, jy-bringing part f His plan specifically fr yur life! Truly, a Gd Wh really lves us wuld put in place a system where we dn t have t earn ur wrth, but are simply and supremely lved by Gd because we were created t be lved by Gd. And Gd wishes fr us t lve Gd back! If we realize the three truths abve are cmpletely true, ur hearts will want t lve Gd back! One way we can d this is t ffer all we d even, and maybe especially thse things we have t d and the time invlved in ding thse things t Gd. We can make everything we d, and the time we must give in rder t d them, as acts f wrship t Gd. Ding this helps us t make Gd the centerpiece f ur lives in a way that can and will, if we trust Jesus t d s bring us the jy Jesus prmises, even in ur seemingly full schedules and lives. It s ttally understandable if yu re having truble getting yur heart and mind arund this r thinking, Hw can this pssibly wrk t give me mre time fr all I need t d? S befre we get int specific acts and strategies frm a Jesus-centered view that can help us t stress less by managing ur time better, let s put tgether a few things Gd has said t us in a way yu may have nt previusly cnsidered. Jeremiah 29:11-13 gives us a great prmise AND the way t claim this prmise. The Bible tells us (in Gd s wrds, spken thrugh the prphet Jeremiah wh was himself a teenager!): I knw the plans I have fr yu declares the Lrd, plans t prsper yu and nt t harm yu, plans t give yu a hpe and a future. Then yu will call upn Me and cme pray t Me, and I will listen t yu. Yu will seek Me and find Me when yu seek Me with yur whle heart. Gd spke these wrds thrugh Jeremiah t peple wh, maybe like yu, were scared and stressed. They felt like their lives were literally falling apart! (Remember, when yu think it s all falling apart, it culd well be that Gd is actually bringing it all tgether just in ways yu can t yet see!) But Gd assured the peple that He had planned what was best fr them. On the ther side f histry that is, as we lk back nw we see Gd nt nly gave His peple exact instructins n hw they culd thrive immediately (by seeking Gd with their whle 2
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels heart with everything that was within them), but Gd als made gd n His prmise f plans t prsper, nt t harm them, plans t give them a hpe and a future While verse 11 gave the prmise (I, Gd, will prsper and nt harm yu, I will give yu hpe and a future), verses 12 and 13 then tld the peple exactly hw t claim Gd s directin fr their lives by seeking Gd with their whle hearts, and praying t Gd, keeping the relatinship thrugh cnstant cmmunicatin with Gd just as yu wuld with a friend with whm yu want a clse relatinship. Gd prmises we will find Gd and therefre, Gd s plan fr us when we seek Gd with all f wh we are! Jesus tld His fllwers and tells us: D nt wrry abut the many things f day-t-day living! Frm the wrds f Jesus in Matthew 6:25-34, we knw that Gd like a lving, supprting Parent desn t wish fr us t be stressed because f time pressures, r fr any ther reasn. Here Jesus cmpares the wrth we have in the eyes f Gd ur Creatr with that f lesser f Gd s creatin. Jesus reminds us f hw much Gd lves us and instructs us nt t wrry. We are nt t wrry in the least abut things we cannt cntrl, but rather pray t Gd Wh prvides fr the things Gd knws we need. Gd has it all cvered keep reading! Fr thse things we can cntrl and must get accmplished, rather than wrry abut them, we shuld link Jesus s instructin D nt wrry with Paul s instructin t d ur very best fr the Lrd given in the next scripture Dn t waste time wrrying wrrying desn t help Gd will help yu d this if yu ask s instead f wasting yur time wrrying, d this Paul gave the peple f Clssus this instructin frm Gd in Clssians 3:17, 23, 24: And whatever yu d, whether in wrd r deed, d it all in the name f the Lrd Jesus, giving thanks t Gd the Father thrugh Him Whatever yu d, wrk at it with all yur heart, as wrking fr Gd and nt fr peple, since yu knw yu will receive an inheritance frm the Lrd as a reward. It is the Lrd Christ Whm yu serve! It wasn t a human being wh first said, Yur best will always be gd enugh! This is scriptural and has its rts in this scripture. We are t d ur best, in thanksgiving t Gd, and d whatever we are ding fr Jesus. Part then f giving ur best includes striving t manage 3
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels ur time in ways that hnr Gd and in the prcess, help us d well at thse things in which we must as well as at thse which we enjy! It s amazing hw when we lk at things we just gtta get dne, hw easy it is t let urselves ff the hk and prcrastinate r nt d ur best r just blw things ff entirely. But when we re ding things fr thse we lve and wh we knw lve us we are typically much mre mtivated t get thse things dne. Especially when we believe the result will bring jy t thse we lve. S it makes cmplete sense n a very human level that if we understand hw intensely Gd lves us and hw much Gd wishes fr us t succeed in Gd s ways, we ll be mre mtivated t tackle the things that stress us ut. We can get past the feeling f I dn t have time when we tackle thse things as thugh we re trying t accmplish these things fr Gd! Gd Wh lves us, Gd Wh knws and has that which is best, Gd Wh has created us specifically, uniquely, perfectly fr the specific, unique, fulfilling, cmplete-jy-bringing part f His plan fr yur life! And Gd Wh supernaturally expands ur time when we strive t hnr Him! Yu may still be having truble understanding, even as great as these prmises are, hw they can help yu t stress less by managing yur time better. In fact, these truths will and d help, because they cntain hints, clues, and cmmands n things that bth rb yur time and thse which can seem t prvide mre time. We put prvide mre time in qutes because in reality, there is nly s much time. Everyne gets the same amunt: 86,400 secnds each day. This resurce is develped t help yu manage the time yu have frm a Christ-centered strategy s yu can stress less as yu claim Gd s prmises by fllwing Gd s instructins instructins Gd gave t bring yu cmplete jy and abundant life! 4
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels S let s get specific n the steps and actins yu can take that will help yu stress less by managing yur time better by lking at hw we are ging abut ding the things we re ding and what we may wish t d differently. Determine What d I want t be my fundatin? This means asking yurself, Wh d I want t be in each situatin? Fr Christians, we believe that trusting Jesus in each and every situatin is the way we are t perate and live! S this is key t managing ur time! Time is a precius gift frm Gd t each f us. Ask yurself, Hw will I use my time s that I am trusting and hnring Jesus? What des/will that lk like in each and every situatin fr yu? Here are key areas that help us build ur fundatin. Faith When I step back and examine my beliefs, attitudes, actins, in whm des it appear I m placing my faith with the way I used my time? Why d I cme t this cnclusin? Values What are my mst precius values? Hw des the way I used my time reflect my values? (Is there a difference between what they are and what they shuld be? If s, hw am I ding with that? And what am I willing t d t make my mst precius values be Christ-centered values? Hw can I claim Jesus s prmises f cmplete jy and abundant life as I determine my values? ) Gals Based n my values, what are my majr gals? (Same questins: Is there a difference between what they are and what they shuld be? Hw and what am I ding with that?) Nte: Sme f yur gals will be determined fr yu. We never get ld enugh t where that is n lnger true. S when yu re given a gal yu must meet, g back t yur fundatin and values t determine fr yurself, Hw will I apprach meeting this gal? What des Jesus have t say abut this? Hw can I claim Jesus s prmises f cmplete jy and abundant life as I tackle this gal? Hw will I use my time in tackling this gal in ways that shw my trust in and wish t serve Jesus? 5
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels We thught that it might be helpful further t clarify what we (yur peer teenagers) think success lks like in ur current, mst imprtant rles in life. What we call success can ften tell us what we value, in what r wh we are placing ur faith, and what ur gals are. Here s what success lks/feels like t us: When I get things dne (the feeling I get) When I m able t help smene When I help smene else t reach their ptential When I achieve a gal When I exceed/vercme expectatins (mine and ther s) When I get finished and have time t relax When I get dne and have extra time t d smething I like t d What I thught was success may nt be because Jesus has a different plan S shuldn t this all flw naturally? Why is it s hard t find time t d all the things we need t d t be successful at ur gals? Well, a majr part is that we ften just g with the flw and take each mment, hur, day as it cmes. And while that sunds almst scriptural and wrrying is actually against what Jesus taught, Paul tells us in Clssians 3 that we need t d ur best fr Gd. Putting thse tgether give us sme AWESOME ADVICE abut using ur time well: Dn t wrry and d yur best (as if yu re wrking fr Gd.!) S let s start anything we have t d well and that begins with planning. S ften, we dn t take time t plan. And there is a true statement abut that which is Failing t plan = planning t fail Technlgy alne gives us ample pprtunities t squander ur time. In rder t nt let this happen, yu ll need t plan and budget yur time just like mney, if we dn t decide what we will spend it n, ur time will seem t disappear. Put int actin a planning prcess that helps yu identify, schedule, and cmplete yur high impact activities...thse activities yu must achieve and/r that will help yu achieve yur gals. 6
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels S, yu re prbably nt gnna want t d this. It s seems almst cunter-prductive. We tend t say, But if I dn t have enugh time t d all the stuff I need t, I fr sure dn t have the time t make a plan r schedule fr all I need t get dne. We ll refer yu again t the rule; Failing t plan is planning t fail. This is ne f thse things that are like when we might feel Gd mving us t d smething we really dn t believe can wrk r that we really dn t want t d. We say, Really Gd? That can t pssibly wrk! r Really Gd, but I REALLY dn t wanna d that! Here we ll just say t yu, Dn t ask questins abut this planning thing! Just trust us! But instead, we re gnna add a few letters t us t make it becme Jesus and say t yu, Dn t ask questins abut this planning thing! Just trust Jesus! It really des wrk have a little faith and try it! It desn t have t be cmplicated a list f pririties n yur phne, in a small ntebk yu keep, maybe a sectin in ne f yur hmewrk binders. This als helps t keep yu frm frgetting imprtant things! Keep reading, we have a great way fr yu t lk at this just a bit later! And remember, yu re wrking fr Jesus! (N pressure! REALLY! N pressure Jesus lves yu s much He can t lve yu mre and wn t lve U less! Wh else wuld we wanna wrk fr?) Here are sme things that will help yu greatly! Get ahead f the curve, lk ahead t what will be asked frm yu, determine what are yur pririty r high impact activities that yu will spend yur time n and make a plan f hw yu will g abut it. What will yu d first, what will yu nt d while yu re at wrk n it, and hw much time will yu spend n each thing yu need t d? Identify yur time rbbers! What are the things I am ding that literally rb time frm me t d the things I must get dne? We and ther teenagers in ur cnference identified these (belw) as sme time rbbers fr us/them: Scial media Prcrastinatin Sleep (Yeah, but we gtta d that!) Technlgy (Cell phnes, hme cmputers, etc.) TV/Netflix(!!!) Friends Mtivatin (r lack f it!) Fear f nt gd enugh r failing Chres/Hme respnsibilities 7
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels NOTE: This list (abve) includes a place where we can apply the first set f Jesus-Centered Time Management practices f which we spke. Back n page 5, we lked at determining what is ur fundatin and what are ur values. Hpefully, trusting Jesus and serving Gd are n ur radar screen fr thse things. (Like, maybe at the tp f that screen! ;-) ) If we say that we wish t trust Jesus and hnr Gd with ur lives, then we might have t questin whether Chres/Hme Respnsibilities belng n a list f time rbbers r if we shuld place that n ur things we must d list. Yeah? (Nte: N mney was accepted frm parents fr that last statement ) S we ve cvered sme ways t determine the types f things that make up the what s ins and als the what s uts in planning ur time. If we d identify what s uts, dn t hesitate tss them ut! That leaves hw t figure ut hw t attack (and cnquer!) the what s in items. Let s g fr it! Discern the imprtant frm the less and nt imprtant. Imprtant vs. Urgent Let s start here by giving definitin t these tw terms and nce yu get familiar with this Christ-Centered Time Management prcess, yu can adjust the definitins t better fit yur needs. Imprtant Things yu must d/get dne in rder t meet a gal yu ve set r that has been set fr yu. Urgent Things that call t yu immediately. Nte: These ARE DIFFERENT! Fr instance, yur cell phne ringing is urgent but it may nt be imprtant. If yur cell phne rings r yu get a text message while yu re driving, keeping yurself and thers safe is much mre imprtant than answering an urgent ringing cell phne r a text message. See the difference? 8
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels Yu may have already figured ut then, that we have fur categry cmbinatins in which the things we d will fall: Imprtant Nt Imprtant Urgent Nt Urgent S yu might be thinking, hw can I tell the difference? Yu actually have a great deal f pwer in this. In fact, yu will have the say-s in many f these chices! (Exceptins being where an authrity under which yu live by definitin has the say s. Again, we all have this even adults dn t get t make all the calls, believe it r nt!) Here are sme examples frm yur peers ther yuth which they think might help yu in making decisins abut what is imprtant vs. what is urgent: Schl classwrk is imprtant but nt always urgent. We have t determine which is bth imprtant and urgent. Fr example, if we have 2 hmewrk assignments due at different times, the first ne due is typically mre urgent because it s due first. S we may wish t d that ne first. (Unless that ne is really easy and it wuld help t tackle the harder ne first s lng as we knw we can get the mst urgent ne dne but that s an exceptin t this methd.) 1 A cmmitment like a practice/rehearsal that ccurs daily r several times a week may seem urgent n any certain day, but may be less urgent depending n the seasn r circumstances. Fr example, a dance class is nt urgent when the recital is sme time away but if the recital is tmrrw, a rehearsal tday seems a bit mre urgent. 1 In a situatin where we need t get hmewrk frm the urgent class dne but we have ther things being asked f us and nly enugh time fr ne thing, we may need t try these r ther strategies: Examine ur schedule t see if smething else we think is imprtant desn t seem s anymre since we have anther imprtant assignment nw. G t parents r teachers t explain why we need time t d the mre urgent task. Ask fr grace in yur schedule frm thse wh cntrl it. Lk at ur time rbbers and determine if eliminating smething will help and what we shuld eliminate. Examine if we ve set urselves up t give ur best in this effrt. (e.g. Am I in an envirnment that let s me cncentrate well and shut ut distractins? Have I remved distractins? D I need t sleep nw and wrk later when I ve recvered frm the sleepies? Have I asked Gd t help me cncentrate fr the next 30/45/60/90 minutes n this task?, etc.) 9
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels Cnversatins with friends are typically what we d call imprtant, but the urgency f the cnversatin is based n the need f ur friend (crisis vs. just checking in ) Urgency, in this case, is prbably determined based n the level f stress that yu think yur friend may be under/hw badly they need t talk vs. what yu need t get dne. Thse are examples we hpe will help yu. If yu re a mre visual persn, g t either page 13 f this guide r this link 2 t see hw t place thse things being asked f yu int ne f these fur categry cmbinatins: IMPORANT AND URGENT IMPORTANT BUT NOT URGENT URGENT BUT NOT IMPORTANT NEITHER URGENT NOR IMPORTANT MORE HELP: Once yu access the link back n page 9, yu can use the time matrix t name the things fr yu that fall int each quadrant. (The matrix shwn at the link has sme gd examples, while thers seem t be mre fr wrking adults. S see which f the things already listed apply t yu, and then think f mre examples f things applicable t yu and plug them int whichever categry each fits. What are things fr yu that are: imprtant and urgent, imprtant but nt urgent, urgent but nt imprtant, neither imprtant r urgent? Make a matrix f yur wn that yu can use t help yu decide hw t priritize and sequence the things yu need t d. Remember, dn t just pick and chse randmly. Apply what yu determined yur fundatin, values, and gals t be as yu select which activities g in each quadrant. As yu re ding s, remember hw much yu are lved by Gd, hw intensely yu can trust Jesus, and wh Gd calls yu t be because f these truths! On page 14, the title Live Nrth f The Line is talking abut the hrizntal line fr which quadrants 1 and 2 are nrth f the line. Yu ll ntice the things that fall int thse 2 areas are 2 This link is an pen access by the Franklin Cvey Time Management system. There was at ne time extensive training available in the area f time management by Franklin Cvey which has been transfrmative in the lives f many. The examples given fcus n mre adult-riented tasks, assignments, and respnsibilities f vcatins, but can be adapted t any age grup. We adapt them here in rder t help adlescents living in a stress-filled culture. 10
Beynd Time! Jesus-Centered, Scripture-Based Time Management fr Yuth (fr the Baltimre Washingtn Cnference Cuncil n Yuth Ministries Stress Less Prject) Authrs: CCYM Member Nit Slack and Rev. Dr. Dave Shwalter with input frm CCYM feedback panels things that are Imprtant and Urgent and Imprtant But Nt Urgent. This means t live nrth f the line is t get t a pint where yu leave anything nt imprtant (any item that is belw the hrizntal line) ff f yur schedule r at least until yu cmplete yur imprtant items befre yu g suth belw the line t thse items. Sunds easy, but if that was s, we d have all the time in the wrld t get stuff dne.and nbdy wuld need guide like this ne! Yu may find yu re better at time management if yu identify which nn-imprtant items yu wish t delete frm yur schedule ne at a time. Get rid f ne successfully, then determine what needs t g next. Yu may nt have t eliminate items altgether. It may be enugh t eliminate thse items during times when yu say, I m dedicating this amunt f time t d and while I m ding that, I m leaving my phne (and any ther distractin) in anther space. Maybe yu als need t turn ff the TV, etc. If yu re using yur cmputer, yu ll just have t discipline yurself t nt g n ver t scial media while yu wrk n easy feat! But remember, yu re wrking as unt the Lrd (Clssians 3:22/23) s maybe yu and Jesus can have a talk each time befre yu begin and cvenant t stay n-task either until yu re dne r until yu re alltted time fr yur task is up. MORE HELP: D yu have a trusted adult wh yu lk t help yu decide what yur pririties shuld be and are? If nt, why nt? A trusted adult wh has had sme success at managing time culd be a great resurce fr yu. But teenagers dn t always either think f asking an adult wh might be helpful, r dn t trust an adult t have yur best interest at heart. Fair enugh, but give sme thught t asking a trusted adult wh might be able t help yu. Here are sme things that we as yur peer students say prevent yuth frm lking t/fr a trusted adult t help us make time management and pririty decisins: Dn t want t tarnish my perfect image Level f trust r lack f it Nt knwing hw t explain myself Afraid I may be misunderstd Afraid f what their reactin might be Afraid f rejectin Relatinship with the persn They may have pinins that vary frm mine Age f the persn depends n the type f help I seek/what I seek help fr I dn t have access t a persn I trust 11
