1 MOBILIZATION REPORT 2018 CAMPAIGN MAY 21 - June 3 Despite major advances in auto-making and vehicle crash worthiness, the most effective means of reducing fatal or serious injury in a traffic crash remains the simplest task of all: wearing a seat belt. Seat belt usage reduces a motor vehicle occupant s risk of fatal injury by 45% and moderate or critical injury by 50%. According to NHTSA, more than 15,000 lives are saved annually because an occupant was wearing their seat belt at the time of a crash. For the year 2015 alone, it is estimated that 207 motor vehicle occupants were saved in New Jersey because they were belted. An additional 32 who were killed would have survived, had they been buckled up. To reinforce the message that motorists should buckle up during every ride and every trip, the NJDHTS coordinated the 2018 Click It or Ticket seat belt mobilization from May 21 June 3, Click It or Ticket is an enforcement campaign, and as such New Jersey s 491 police departments were actively engaged in the effort, with 131 receiving $5,500 Click It or Ticket overtime enforcement grants from NJDHTS. The 2018 campaign received a big launch on day one when New Jersey law enforcement agencies joined forces with police departments from around the country for the Border-to-Border Click It or Ticket campaign enforcement kickoff on May 21, THE RESULTS 357 (73%) of the 491 police agencies in New Jersey participated in the mobilization. The breakdown included 164 of 183 agencies (90%) in the Northern Region, 86 of 174 (49%) in the Central Region, 103 of 129 (80%) in the Southern Region, and New Jersey State Police. Participating departments reported working more than 15,000 total hours of seat belt enforcement during the campaign period. The 357 agencies issued 19,659 seat belt citations during the two-week campaign, up from 17,792 during the 2017 mobilization. 17 police agencies issued more than 150 seat belt summonses each. In addition to seat belt citations, police officers wrote 534 child restraint and 4,437 speeding citations, and made 661 DWI arrests.
