1 CRACKDOWN REPORT DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER STATEWIDE CRACKDOWN AUGUST 17 SEPTEMBER 3, 2018 Those who choose to drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs exact a terrible toll. Nationally, there were 10,874 impaired driving fatalities in For the five year period New Jersey experienced approximately 37,964 alcohol involved crashes, resulting in 718 fatalities. The work of the law enforcement and traffic safety communities to combat impaired driving has had a positive impact over the years. However, the job is clearly not done. Consistent, ongoing effort is required. From August 17 - September 3, 2018, NJDHTS again participated in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over impaired driving crackdown. The goal of the crackdown was to mobilize all police agencies in New Jersey to raise public awareness about the dangers of impaired driving through a combination of high visibility enforcement backed up by targeted media activities. NJDHTS asked all 491 police agencies in New Jersey to support the 2018 crackdown. Due to the much anticipated upgrade of the Division s SAGE e-grant system, which occurred in the midst of the crackdown, no grant funding was offered. Police departments were asked to support the crackdown through the use of their own resources. The strong commitment to fighting impaired driving in New Jersey will continue in the years ahead, and will take on added significance if the proposed legalization of recreational marijuana use in the State comes to pass. THE RESULTS During the 2018 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over statewide crackdown, 1,196 DWI arrests (alcohol or drug impaired) were reported, down from 1,382 in last year s campaign. In addition, participating police agencies issued 4,764 and 3,194 speeding and seat belt summonses, respectively. There were also 1,490 summonses issued relating to the distracted driving offenses of cell phone use or texting while driving. It is estimated that approximately 6,200 enforcement man-hours were worked during the campaign, which included 20 fixed DWI checkpoints. Sixty-eight percent (335) of New Jersey s police agencies participated in the crackdown, which is a strong number considering the lack of grant funding. A number of agencies reported significant accomplishments during the crackdown, including 12 agencies making 10 or more DWI arrests during the two-week campaign. Police Agency Participation by Year
