1 NYS Algebra Regents Curriculum Map Section 1: Introduction to the Real Number Set (8 days instruction, 1 1/2 day assessment) Explore the real number set and its subsets. Develop rules for operations with signed numbers. Add, subtract, multiply and divide integers. Discover the law of exponents for multiplication and division. Investigate powers and exponents. Explain the hierarchy of the order of operations. Simplify expressions using the order of operations. Section 2: Decimals (7 days instruction, 1 days assessment) Identify the place values of decimals. Read and write decimals. Develop rules for operations with decimals. Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. Express numbers in scientific notation. Explore the uses of writing numbers in scientific notation. Translate numbers written in scientific notation to standard form and vice versa. Compare numbers written in scientific notation. Section 3: Number Theory (7 days instruction, 1day assessment) Explore factors and multiples and their importance in mathematics. Investigate the divisibility rules. Determine the prime factorization of a given number and write it in exponential form. Find common factors and greatest common factors of sets of numbers. Find common multiples and least common multiples of sets of numbers. Develop a strategies using prime factorization to find the greatest common factor and least common multiple of a given set of numbers.

Section 4: Fractions (6 days instruction, 1 ½ days assessment) Explore fractions, numerator, and denominator, comparing fractions, and ordering fractions. Convert fractions to decimals. Convert fractions to mixed numbers. Add fractions Subtract fractions. Multiply fractions. Divide fractions. Section 5: Ratios, Proportions, and Percents (7 days instruction, 1 ½ days assessment) Define ratios, and three different ways of expressing them. Define proportions. Find the missing part of a ratio when given a proportion. Use ratios and proportions to find percents. Convert percents to decimals. Convert percents to fractions. Find percent increase, percent decrease, sale price, sales tax, simple interest, and compound interest. Section 6: Equations (15 days instruction, 2 day assessment) Explore variables, variable expressions and variable equations. Add and subtract expressions. Multiply and divide expressions. Solve one-step equations. Solve two-step equations. Solve multiple step equations. Translate words into algebraic expressions. Solve word problems with one variable. Recall and use formulas. Section 7: Polynomials and Factoring (13 days instruction, 2 days assessment) Discover the Laws of exponents. Examine the quadratic equation, ax²+bx+c = 0.

3 Define the quadratic formula, X = [-b ± (b² - 4ac) ^½] 2a. Multiply binomials (FOIL). Factor Polynomials (focus on the middle term). Solve equations by factoring. Use factoring to solve word problems. Section 8: Functions and Graphs (15 days instruction, 2½ days assessment) Explore the number line. Define the coordinate plane, abscissa and ordinate. Graph coordinates and points. Graph equations using a chart. Input the x-value and output a y-value. Explore slopes. Recognize positive slopes, negative slopes, no slopes and zero slope from a graph of a line. Use the slope intercept form of an equation to graph the line (y = mx + b). Convert equations into slope intercept form. Find the equation of a line. Define and prove parallel lines on the coordinate plane. Define and prove perpendicular lines on the coordinate plane. Graph quadratic functions (parabolas). Determine minimum and maximum (Vertex). Calculate the axis of symmetry. Explore relationships between the x-intercepts, the discriminant (b² - 4ac), and the roots of a quadratic equation. Solve word problems determining the maximum and minimum. Graph circles. Section 9: Inequalities (7 days instruction, 1 day assessment) Graph inequalities on the number line. Solve inequalities and graphing the solution set. Solve word problems involving inequalities. Perform operations with absolute value. Graph linear inequalities.

4 Section 10: System of Equations and Inequalities (11 days instruction, 3 days assessment) Solve systems of equations by graphing Solve systems of equations algebraically using substitution. Solve systems of equations by elimination (combining). Solve systems of inequalities by graphing. Use the aforementioned strategies to solve word problems. Section 11: Square Roots and Radicals (9 days instruction, 2 days assessment) Explore square roots and define radicals. Simplify radicals. Simplify radical expressions. Solve equations involving radicals. Explore the Pythagorean Theorem. Define and use the distance and midpoint formulas. Section 12: Rational Expressions (7 days instruction, 1 day assessment) Simplify rational expressions. Add and subtract rational expressions. Multiply and divide rational expressions. Solve rational equations. Solve word problems involving rational expressions and equations. Section 13: Statistics and Probability (8 days instruction, 2 days assessment) Explore measures of central tendencies: mean, median, mode and range. Read and create frequency tables and histograms. Interpret Stem-and-leaf plots and box and whisker plots. Use Venn diagrams to organize and interpret data. Determine the probability of a given event: permutations and combinations.

5 Compute permutations and combinations on the calculator. Section 14: Geometry (14 days instruction, 3 days assessment) Find area and perimeter of polygons, circles and sectors of circles. Use formulas to determine the volume and surface area of rectangular solids, and cylinders. Explore polygons and their classifications. Introduce a relationship between the number of sides of a polygon and the sum of the interior angles of that polygon. Explore right triangle trigonometry; sine, cosine, and tangent ratios. Define angle of accent and depression. Identify special right triangles.

All students are expected to complete each homework assignment. It is intended to reinforce lessons and to give each student an opportunity for independent practice. When completed homework will be a useful evaluation tool for both the student and teacher. This will allow us to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses prior to formal assessments.

7 Curriculum Mapping has made every attempt over the recent years to enhance curriculum. It has been our initiative to offer our students a comprehensive curriculum that is parallel to the NYS core curriculum in each content area. In 2006/2007 curriculum teams were formed to create curriculum guides complete with course outlines, core curriculum, glossaries and course descriptions. A component that we are adding is curriculum mapping. This should provide teachers, administrators, parents and most importantly the student with a road map as to what to expect in each course. This map is a suggested guide to be used as a reference. All parties involved should be aware that the teachers are obligated by individual student needs to modify curriculum and instruction to best suit each student. Adding these curriculum maps will provide more structure to the delivery of instruction and help to better prepare our students for exams, college and most importantly life.
