1 Ridge Production in High-Multilicity Hadronic Ultra-Periheral Proton-Proton Collisions Stanley J. Brodsky SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Stanford University Stanislaw D. Glazek Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw Alfred S. Goldhaber C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, Stony Brook University Robert W. Brown Case Western Reserve University arxiv: v3 [he-h] 7 Oct 07 Introduction Abstract An unexected result at the RHIC and the LHC is the observation that highmultilicity hadronic events in heavy-ion and roton-roton collisions are distributed as two ridges", aroximately flat in raidity and oosite in azimuthal angle. We roose that the origin of these events is due to the inelastic collisions of aligned gluonic flux tubes that underly the color confinement of the quarks in each roton. We redict that high-multilicity hadronic ridges will also be roduced in the high energy hoton-hoton collisions accessible at the LHC in ultra-eriheral roton-roton collisions or at a high energy electron-ositron collider. We also note the orientation of the flux tubes between the q q of each high energy hoton will be correlated with the lane of the scattered roton or leton. Thus hadron roduction and ridge formation can be controlled in a novel way at the LHC by observing the azimuthal correlations of the scattering lanes of the ultra-eriheral rotons with the orientation of the roduced ridges. Photon-hoton collisions can thus illuminate the fundamental hysics underlying the ridge effect and the hysics of color confinement in QCD. Keywords QCD, hadron roduction; two-hoton collisions; ultra-eriheral collisions; ridge roduction; LHC. One of the striking features of roton-roton collisions at RHIC [, ] and the LHC [3 5] is the observation that high multilicity events are distributed as ridges" which are aroximately flat in raidity. Two ridges aear, with oosite azimuthal angles, simultaneously reflecting collective multile article flow and transverse momentum conservation. This statement follows from the analyses in the quoted references, although it does not aear there exlicitly. Exerimental results from PHENIX [, ] are illustrated in Fig.. Since ridges aear in rotonroton collisions [6] as well as heavy ion collisions, this henomenon evidently does not require the formation of a quark-gluon lasma. In addition, the high-multilicity events show an unexectedly high strangeness content [5]. In a revious ublication with J. D. Bjorken, we suggested [7] that the ridge correlations reflect the rare events generated by the collision of aligned flux tubes that connect the quark to the diquark in the wave function of the colliding rotons. The sray of articles resulting from the aroximate line source roduced in such inelastic collisions then gives rise to events with strong correlations over a large range of both ositive and negative raidity.
2 +! X, s =00GeV Au + Au! X, s =00GeV Ridge henomena observed in both - and Au-Au collisions Fig. : Ridge formation in roton-roton and nucleus-nucleus collisions Ultra-eriheral roton-roton and heavy ion collisions (UPC) would allow the study of multi- TeV hoton-hoton interactions at the LHC [8, 9]. Possible hoton-hoton studies include light-bylight scattering [0], to-air roduction via γγ t t rocesses, electroweak tests such as W air roduction in γγ W + W events [], QCD studies, such as hard inclusive and exclusive hadronic reactions, and measurements sensitive to the hoton structure function [ 4]. In this reort we show that the hoton-hoton collisions rovided by ultra-eriheral roton-roton collisions at the LHC can illuminate the hysical QCD mechanisms which underly high mutilicity hadronic events and ridge formation, including the role of color confinement and gluonic string formation. In ultra-eriheral roton-roton collisions, each of the virtual hotons can coule to a virtual q q air. The quark and antiquark are connected by a flux tube, reflecting color-confining QCD interactions, as illustrated in Fig.. One can identify the flux tubes with the string-like network of gluonic interactions which confine color. Such gluonic flux tubes were originally ostulated by Isgur and Paton in ref. [5]. The high-energy inelastic collisions of the two flux tubes when they are maximally aligned will then lead to high-multilicity hadronic events distributed across the raidity lateau. Moreover, one exects the lanes of the ridges to be correlated with the lanes of the flux tubes. Thus in a γ γ UPC collision, the two overlaing flux tubes can collide and interact (by multi-gluon exchange) to roduce the final-state hadrons. The final-state interactions ut the system on-shell so that four-momentum is conserved. This is illustrated in Fig. 3. Photon-hoton collisions with aligned flux tubes can also be studied at a high energy electronion collider (EIC) or in hoton-roton collisions at the roosed LHeC collider, as well as with UPC roton-roton collisions at the LHC. We come now to an interesting uzzle about the rocess of forming two coordinated ridges in collisions, where both rotons suffer momentum transfer along the same axis.

4 Here are two different scenarios: In each, we will assume that the momentum transfer to each roton roduces a quark-antiquark air aligned with that momentum transfer, with a tube of color-electric flux connecting quark to antiquark.. It may be that the eventually roduced articles also exhibit transverse momentum along that same direction, resulting from violent motions along both of the arallel tubes.. The second ossibility is that collision of the two arallel flux tubes causes them to generate articles that emerge out of the long sides of the relatively quiescent tubes, and therefore come out in ridges with a range of transverse momenta extending out of the lane defined by the beam and the momentum transfer. Thus the first ossibility could be called violent and classical, while the second is quiet and coherent, whether hydrodynamical or quantum-mechanical. These two very different ossibilities make the search for correlated ridges in scattering an extremely interesting exeriment. A light-front wavefunction (LFWF) of a hadron ψ H (x i, k i, λ i ) =< n ψ H > for an n-arton Fock state is the hadronic eigensolution ψ H > of the QCD light-front Hamiltonian H LF ψ >= MH ψ > rojected on the free arton basis. Here x i = k i + /P + = (k 0 + k 3 )/(P 0 + P 3 ) is the boost-invariant LF momentum fraction of constituent i, with n i= x i =. The squares of the LFWFs integrated over transverse momentum underly the hadronic structure functions, and the overlas of the LFWFs generate the hadronic form factors. A light-front wavefunction is defined at a fixed LF time τ = t + z; it thus can be arbitrarily off-shell in P and in invariant mass M = P + P P = i ( k +m x ) i. For examle, the ointlike-couling of a hoton in erturbative QED to an intermediate leton air l + l has the form ψ γ l l α ɛ k M, where d k dx ψ α. One can study analogous double-leton-air formation in UPC collisions + [l + l ] + [l + l ] as a check on the basic formalism. For related calculations, see ref. [6]. The couling of the hoton to quark airs in QCD has both soft and hard contributions. The same coulings contribute to the structure and evolution of the hoton structure function [ 4]. We have found that it can be useful to analyze high energy collisions in the Fool s ISR" frame, where the two incident rojectiles both have ositive P + = P 0 + P z and nonzero transverse momenta ± r. The CM energy squared s = ( A + B ) = 4r is then carried by the nonzero transverse momenta. For an examle, see ref. [7]. This frame choice simlifies factorization analyses for QCD in the front form since it allows a single light-cone gauge A + = 0 for both rojectiles. Origin of Flux Tubes in UPC and γγ collisions We will assume that QCD color confinement creates a gluonic string between the q and the q of the hoton. This can be motivated using AdS/QCD, together with LF holograhy. This formalism has been successful in redicting virtually the entire hadronic sectrum, as well as dynamics such as hadron form factors, and structure functions at an initial nonerturbative scale, as well as the QCD running couling α s (Q ) at all scales [8, 9]. An examle of the redicted meson and baryon Regge sectroscoy using suerconformal algebra [8] is shown in Fig. 4. The LF wavefunction ψ q q (x, k ) is the off-shell amlitude connecting the hoton to the q q at invariant mass M = k +m q k+ x( x), where x = at fixed LF time τ. The q q color-confining frameindeendent otential for light quarks derived from AdS/QCD and light-front holograhy has the form P + U(ζ) = κ 4 ζ = κ 4 b x( x) in the light-front Hamiltonian [8]. The color-confining otential that acts between the q q air for the virtual hoton then leads to Gaussian fall-off for the hoton s LFWF ψ q q (x, k ) with increasing invariant mass as well as Gaussian fall-off in transverse coordinate sace: e κ ζ = e κ b x( x) as shown in Fig. 5 The same color-confining dynamics imlies a string-like flux tube of gluons aearing between the q and q. The gluonic flux tube (illustrated as a thick blue line) shown in Fig. 3 reresents the network of gluons that connects the quark to the antiquark. In effect, 4

The redictions for the meson and baryon mass sectra have the form M M = 4κ (n+l M ) for mesons and M B = 4κ (n + L B + ) for baryons; i.e., universal Regge sloes in the rincial quantum number n and orbital angular momentum L for both mesons and baryons. The baryons have a quark lus scalar diquark structure with relative orbital angular momentum L B. Suerconformal algebra, together with LF holograhy, redicts the equality of meson and baryon masses for L M = L B +. the transverse width of the flux tube is characterized by b κ x( x), where κ / GeV is the characteristic mass scale of QCD, and x and x are the LF momentum fractions of the q and the q. The width of the stringlike flux tube is thus smallest for x / and largest at x 0, ; i.e., at large M q q. Note that one is looking at the virtual q q state and its gluonic string at fixed LF time τ. The longitudinal satial coordinate is x = x 3 x 0, which is conjugate to the LF momentum k + = k 0 +k 3 = xp +. Thus the domain x 0, and large invariant air mass corresonds to large x ; i.e., large satial searation between the q and q. One can identify the raidity y of a arton with resect to the arent state as y = log x. The raidity difference y q y q between the quark and antiquark thus grows as log x. The inelastic collision of two flux tubes when they are maximally aligned will then lead to high-multilicity hadronic events distributed across the raidity lateau, where the lane of the rimary ridge is aligned in azimuthal angle arallel to the aligned flux tubes. It is thus clear that the maximum number of hadrons will be created when each virtual q q air has maximum M and the gluonic strings are long and maximally aligned; i.e., the collision of long flux tubes. The hadrons in such high multilicity events will be roduced nearly uniformly in raidity and thus aear as ridges. This descrition of γγ collisions also rovides a model for Pomeron exchange between the colliding q q systems. It would be interesting to relate this hysical icture to the Pomeron and string-based analyses such as that given in Ref. [0] 5

An imortant asect of the UPC events is that the lane of each roduced q q (and thus the orientation of the flux tube) is correlated with the scattering lane of the arent roton since the virtual hotons are transversely olarized to the fermion scattering lanes. The correlation to first aroximation is roortional to cos φ where φ = φ φ. Since the flux tubes are aligned with the roton scattering lanes, one can enhance the robability for high multilicity hadron roduction by selecting events where the lanes of the scattered UPC rotons are arallel. Conversely, one will roduce mininum hadron multilicity if the scattering lanes are orthogonal φ = φ φ ' π/. The couling of the highly virtual hotons to strange and charm q q airs as well as the comosition of the flux tubes themselves can lead to enhanced charm and strange hadron multilicity. We also note that in addition to the hadrons roduced by the collision of the flux tubes, the q q airs can also interact with each other by gluon exchange and roduce u to four near-forward quark jets of various flavors and combinations. Such jet atterns [] could rovide additional information on the hysics arising from the collisions of gluonic strings sanned between quarks. One comlication which we are currently investigating is whether the collision of the flux tubes itself can affect the orientation of the incoming q q lanes and thus dilute the redicted alignment between the colliding gluonic strings. One exects that the rotation of the q q lane will be imortant when the total mass of the roduced hadronic system is comarable to the q q invariant mass. However, the rediction that minimal hadron multilicity will be roduced when the scattering lanes of the UPC rotons are erendicular would not be affected. One can think of the initial configuration shown in Fig. as similar to the configuration one has for initial distributions in QCD factorization, such as Drell-Yan leton air roduction. The initial configuration can however be modified by the collision itself. This is analogous to the initial-state scattering 6

One redicts a color flux tube connecting the 3 C quark to the 3 C diquark and a second flux tube within the sin-zero diquark. in leton-air roduction that roduces the Sivers single-sin correlation [] or the double- -Mulders effect [3]. In the case of the roton, AdS/QCD redicts a color flux tube which combines two quarks into a 3 C diquark system, lus a flux tube that connects the remaining 3 C quark to the flux tube of the diquark system. See Fig. 6. The configuration of flux tubes in the roton is a secial case of the Y configuration discussed in ref. [4]. The activation of both the q[qq] and [qq] flux tubes in a roton-roton collision could thus lead to both v and v 3 correlations in the distributions of the final-state hadrons. In contrast, the UPC hoton-hoton collisions would only lead to a v correlation from the activation of the [q q] flux tubes. The deendence of the distributions of high multilicity events on roton structure is discussed in ref. [4]. One could also study the interactions of flux tubes in γ collisions using a single UPC roton at the LHC. See Fig. 7. The oriented flux tube of the hoton generated by the single UPC roton can interact with either of the two flux tubes within the roton quark-diquark LFWF to roduce high multilicity hadronic events. The hadrons will tend to be distributed with v or v 3 moments deending on the details of the collision. The roduced ridges of hadrons will in this case tend to be oriented with the scattering lane of the UPC roton. 3 Acknowledgements Presented by SJB at Photon 07: The International Conference on the Structure and the Interactions of the Photon and the International Worksho on Photon-Photon Collisions.
