1 Raidity losses in heavy-ion collisions from AGS to RHIC energies arxiv:99.546v1 [nucl-ex] 28 Se Introduction F. C. Zhou 1,2, Z. B. Yin 1,2 and D. C. Zhou 1,2 1 Institute of Particle Physics, Huazhong Normal University, Wuhan 4379, China 2 Key Laboratory of Quark & Leton Physics (Huzhong Normal University), Ministry of Education, China zbyin@mail.ccnu.edu.cn Abstract. We study the raidity losses in central heavy-ion collisions from AGS to RHIC energies with the mean raidity determined from the rojectile net-baryon distribution after collisions. The rojectile net-baryon distribution in the full raidity range was obtained by removing the target contribution henomenologically at forward raidity region from the exerimental net-baryon measurements and taking into account the rojectile contribution at backward raidity region. Based on the full rojectile netbaryon distributions, calculation results show that the raidity loss stos increasing from the SPS to energy to RHIC energies, indicating that baryon transort does not deend strongly on energy at high energies. The ultimate goal of studying (ultra-)relativistic heavy-ion collisions is to search for the signatures of ossible quark-gluon lasma (QGP) formation and exlore the roerties of QGP and the hase transition from hadronic matter to de-confined quark matter [1, 2, 3, 4]. In heavy-ion collisions, the colliding nuclei lose art of their kinetic energy for the ossible formation of QGP and new article roduction. The degree of kinetic energy loss is customarily quantified by the average raidity loss, < δy >= y < y b >, (1) where y is the raidity of the rojectile before the collisions and < y b > is the mean raidity of rojectile net-baryons after the collisions [5, 6]. However, exerimentally it is not ossible to distinguish between baryons originating from the target or from the rojectile. Thus, henomenological models have to be used in order to extract the ure rojectile net-baryon raidity distribution from exerimental data. Raidity losses in heavy-ion collisions were measured at different energies from AGS, SPS to RHIC [7, 8, 9, 1] with aims of determining the degree of nuclear stoing and energy density built u in the reaction zone. At AGS energies, it was demonstrated by the E917 collaboration that the net-baryon distributions after heavy-ion collisions
2 Raidity losses in heavy-ion collisions from AGS to RHIC energies 2 could be well described with double gaussians [7]. The mean raidity losses were then correctly estimated by using Eq. (1) with the < y b > determined from the gaussian centered at ositive raidity, which was assumed to corresond to the rojectile baryon distribution. At SPS and RHIC energies the mean raidity losses were calculated without distinguishing the origin of the net-baryons but the mean raidity value from the mid-raidity to y was taken as the < y b > [8, 9, 1]. This makes the comarison of raidity losses at different energies comlicated when the contribution of target baryon to the net-baryon distribution at the raidity region above mid-raidity showed a strong energy deendence [1]. In order to study the energy deendence of the raidity loss, it is thus necessary to examine the sensitivity of raidity loss value to the target baryon contribution. In this aer, we first extract in section 2 the ure rojectile net-baryon distribution from exerimental measurements of net-baryon distributions based on henomenological model descritions of target baryon contribution to the net-baryon yields at ositive raidity in the center-of-mass system. Then we calculate the average raidity loss in the most central heavy-ion collisions at different energies with the obtained ure rojectile net-baryon distribution and show its energy deendence in section 3. Finally, we conclude with a short summary in section The rojectile net-baryon raidity distribution The rojectile baryons eak at y before the heavy-ion collision, while after the collision the rojectile baryon distribution can extend from target raidity to the rojectile raidity [6]. Thus, to obtain the average rojectile baryon raidity < y b > after the collision, the integration should be carried out from the target raidity to the rojectile raidity. For symmetrical heavy-ion collisions, we exress the < y b > in the center-ofmass system as dnb B dy < y b >= 2 N art y y y dnb B dy dy, (2) where is the rojectile net-baryon raidity distribution and N art is the number of articiating baryons in the collisions. In collider exeriments one can choose any of the two incoming beams as the rojectile. In this aer, we consider the nuclear beam in ositive raidity direction as the rojectile. As it is exerimentally imossible to distinguish baryons originating from the target or from the rojectile, one has to rely on henomenological models to extract the rojectile net-baryon distribution. We use the same aroach as described in Ref. [1], where the target contribution at ositive raidity region is estimated as the average of two different raidity deendences : (1) a simle exonential form ex( y) [5] and (2) a gluon junction motivated form ex( y ) [12]. For a symmetrical colliding system, 2 the rojectile baryons should comrise half of the whole net-baryons at mid-raidity, the subtraction of the target contribution based on the henomenological functions

The red dashed lines indicate the rojectile contribution at target raidity region. The data oints show the resulted rojectile baryon density after subtracting henomenologically the target contribution from the exerimental measured netbaryon data at ositive raidity region. The green dashed lines are curves used to fit the data oints. The arrows indicate the values of the beam raidities. Panel (A), (B), (C) and (D) corresond resectively to the most central heavy-ion (Pb+Pb or Au+Au) collisions at SPS with beam energy of 4 AGeV [11], SPS at s = 17 GeV [8], RHIC at s = 62.4 GeV [1], and RHIC at s = 2 GeV [9]. is therefore constrained by the net-baryon measurements at mid-raidity. At AGS energies, as there is a non-negligible target contribution around y, the double gaussians form used in Ref. [7] is found to be one of the best forms to describe the exerimental net-baryon data and thus we will adot their results on raidity losses when we discuss on the energy deendence in the following section. In Fig. 1 the data oints reresent the resulted rojectile baryon densities after henomenologically subtracting the target contribution from the exerimental measured net-baryon data at ositive raidity region. The green dashed lines are curves used to fit the data oints considering the conservation of baryon number as discussed below. The arrows indicate the values of beam raidities. Panel (A), (B), (C) and (D) corresond to the most central heavy-ion (Pb+Pb or Au+Au) collisions at SPS with beam energy of 4 AGeV [11], SPS at s = 17 GeV [8], RHIC at s = 62.4 GeV [1], and RHIC at s = 2 GeV [9], resectively. Due to the rojectile-target symmetry, the rojectile baryon distribution at negative raidity region should be the same as the target contribution at the ositive raidity region. These two together should form an

In the figure the rojectile contribution at negative raidity region is indicated with red dashed lines. Thus, merging the red and green dashed lines at mid-raidity gives the net-baryon distribution from rojectile only in the whole raidity range from y to y. It is worthwhile to mention that, in order to conserve the baryon number, the fit to the data oints was done in such a manner that the total baryon number obtained by integrating the rojectile net-baryon distribution from y to y amounts to half of the number of articiating baryons. To comare the rojectile net-baryon distributions at different energies, Fig. 2 deicts a comilation of the rojectile net-baryon raidity density normalized to the 2 dn number of articiants, B B N art, from AGS, SPS to RHIC energies in the raidity dy frame of the rojectile, y = y y. It is evident that the raidity distribution eaks at lower y values with higher colliding energies from AGS to to SPS energy. This indicates the mean raidity loss increases with beam energy. However, the eak osition at RHIC energy of s = 62.4 GeV does not show a significant difference from that at s = 17 GeV, imlying a ossible different mechanism of baryon transort and nuclear reaction [13, 14, 15] above the to SPS energy comared to lower energies. 3. The energy deendence of raidity loss With the rojectile net-baryon distribution as shown in Fig. 1, we can calculate the raidity losses at SPS and RHIC energies by using Eq. (1) and Eq. (2). The results are shown as oen symbols in Fig. 3 and comared to the ublished ones in Ref. [1],
5 Raidity losses in heavy-ion collisions from AGS to RHIC energies 5 3 Raidity loss <δy > Result from PLB 677(29) 267: This work: AGS 6,8,1 AGeV 11A GeV SPS S = 17 GeV RHIC S = 62.4 GeV S = 2GeV SPS 4A GeV S = 17 Gev RHIC S = 62.4 GeV S = 2 GeV y Figure 3. Raidity losses in the most central heavy-ion (Au, Pb) collisions from AGS, SPS to RHIC as a function of beam raidity. The black dashed line is a linear fit to the AGS energy raidity loss as discussed in Ref. [6], while the red dashed horizontal line is used to guide your eyes. The filled symbols are results ublished in ref. [1] and oen symbols are results from this work. in which the target contribution was not subtracted and the < y b > was evaluated from mid-raidity to beam raidity. It is evident that the correction on the raidity loss value is largest at SPS energy and decreases with energy because both the target contribution at ositive raidity and the rojectile contribution at negative raidity to the net-baryon distribution decreases with increase of energy. As a comarison to revious results, another significant feature of our results is that the raidity loss does not increase with energy above s = 17 GeV. This would indicate that the reorted results in Ref. [1] on the beam raidity deendence of the raidity loss can be misleading because the true raidity loss value deends strongly on the target contribution to the net-baryon distribution at ositive raidity region. As the target contribution decreases with increase of energy, one would exect the target contribution to become negligible at LHC energy. Thus, it is very interesting to measure the raidity loss value at LHC to examine the systematic trends of raidity losses at high energies. To exlore the energy deendence of the nuclear stoing ower, Fig. 4 deicts the relative raidity loss as a function of the collision energy in the center-of-mass system. The relative raidity loss shows an increase with energy from AGS to SPS but then a decrease above SPS energy, indicating that the largest stoing ower is achievable around the to SPS energy.
6 Raidity losses in heavy-ion collisions from AGS to RHIC energies <δy >/y Result from PLB 677(29) 267: AGS 6,8,1 AGeV 11A GeV This work: SPS 4A GeV S = 17 Gev RHIC S = 62.4 GeV S = 2 GeV 1 s GeV 2 1 Figure 4. The relative mean raidity loss as a function of the colliding energy in the center-of-mass system. 4. Conclusions In this aer, we investigate a ossible correction to the ublished results of raidity loss by extracting the rojectile net-baryon distribution in the whole raidity range from the exerimental measurements of net-baryon distribution with hel of henomenological models on the target contribution to the net-baryon density at ositive raidity. This energy deendent correction leads to a different raidity deendence of the mean raidity loss comared to the results reorted in Ref. [1]. The mean raidity loss starts to saturate at energy of s = 17 GeV and the largest stoing ower is reached at the to SPS energy. This indicates that sufficiently high energy collisions will get transarent as assumed by Bjorken [16] and will result in aroximately net-baryonfree region at mid-raidity. As the target contribution to the net-baryon density at ositive raidity region is exected to be negligible at LHC energies, we roose to measure the raidity loss at LHC energies so as to verify or falsify the systematic trends of the beam raidity deendence of the raidity loss as observed in this aer. This measurement can also hel to distinguish between different roosed henomenological mechanisms of initial coherent multile interactions and baryon transort in heavy-ion collisions at various beam energies [5, 12].
