It is shown that the roosed aroach exlains the of all articles over a wide range of transverse momentum but does not seem to describe the rise in at very high transverse momenta. PACS q Relativistic heavy-ion collisions Cj Heavy-quark roduction in heavy-ion collisions One of the major goals of studying heavy-ion collisions at high-energies is to search for a deconfined state of quarks and gluons, also known as quark gluon lasma (QGP), and to study its roerties. he bulk roerties of the QGP are governed by light quarks and gluons. he heavy quarks act as robes for QGP roerties due to the fact that they witness the entire lasma evolution as they are roduced in the initial hard scattering and endure until hadronization. Also, as their time scale of thermalization is longer than that of light quarks, they can retain the entire interaction history more effectively. Similarly, the energy loss of light quarks becomes imortant to study the flavor deendence of the energy loss in heavy-ion collisions. he energy loss is more for high- heavy and light quark flavors [,2,3,4] due to interaction with the medium. Finally they aear as constituents of hadrons. he roagation of energetic quarks through the medium has been treated as Brownian motion which is described by means of Fokker-Planck equation. In this equation, the interaction is encoded in drag and diffusion coefficients. Many theoretical efforts have been made using Fokker-Planck equation to reroduce the exerimentally observed value of of heavy and light quarks [5,6,7,8,9,,,2,3]. Also, there have been studies to elucidate the dominant mode of energy loss [5] or the flavor deendence of energy a Present Address: Deartment of Physics and Astronomy, Stony Brook University, SUNY, Stony Brook, NY , USA b Raghunath.Sahoo@cern.ch (corresonding author) loss [4,5]. But, till date the issues are far from being settled [6]. he nuclear modification factor ( ) is a measure of the modification of article roduction. It can be reresented as = f fin f in, () where f in is the distribution of the highly energetic articles immediately after their formation and f fin is the distribution of the articles after the interaction with the medium. is defined as ( ) = (/N evt AA )d2 N AA /dyd ( N coll /σ inel NN ) d2 σ /dyd, (2) where d 2 N AA /dyd is the yield in A+A collisions, N coll is the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions averaged over the imact arameter range of the corresonding centrality bin calculated by Glauber Monte-Carlo simulation [7]. σnn inel is the inelastic cross section and d2 σ /dyd is the differential cross section for inelastic + collisions. N evt is the number of events in A+A collisions. If, AA =, this indicates that A+A collisions are mere suerosition of scaled + collisions. A deviation of from unity indicates the medium modification. It has been observed that high- article yields in Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at RHIC and LHC are suressed as comared to + collisions [8,9], which suggests the formation of a dense medium. In this work, we reresent the initial distribution of the energetic articles with the hel of sallis ower law
2 2 Sushanta riathy et al.: Nuclear Modification Factor... distribution arameterized by the sallis q arameter and the sallis temerature, remembering the fact that their genesis is due to very hard scatterings. We lug the initial distribution (f in ) in Boltzmann ransort Equation (BE) and solve it with the hel of Relaxation ime Aroximation (RA) of the collision term to find out the final distribution (f fin ). Hence, the ratio in Eq. exressible in terms of q, and relaxation time τ can be comuted and comared with the exerimentally observed values. he aer is organized as follows. In section 2, the nuclear modification factor is derived using RA of the BE and the exression for nuclear modification factor is derived. In section 3, fits to the exerimental data using the roosed model along with results and discussions are resented; and lastly, we summarize our findings in section 4. 2 Nuclear Modification Factor in Relaxation time aroximation (RA) he evolution of the article distribution owing to its interaction with the medium articles can be studied through Boltzmann transort equation, df(x,, t) dt = f t + v. xf + F. f = C[f], (3) where f(x,, t) is the distribution of articles which deends on osition, momentum and time. v is the velocity and F is the external force. x and are the artial derivatives with resect to osition and momentum, resectively. C[f] is the collision term which encodes the interaction of the robe articles with the medium. he Boltzmann ransort Equation has earlier also been used in relaxation time aroximation to study the time evolution of temerature fluctuation in a non-equilibrated system [2]. Assuming homogeneity of the system ( x f = ) and absence of external force (F = ), the second and third terms of the above equation become zero and Eq. 3 becomes, df(x,, t) dt = f t = C[f] (4) In relaxation time aroximation [2, 22], the collision term can be exressed as, C[f] = f f eq τ (5) where f eq is Boltzmann local equilibrium distribution characterized by a temerature eq. τ is the relaxation time, the time taken by a non-equilibrium system to reach equilibrium. With the ansatz in Eq. 5, Eq. 4 becomes, f t = f f eq τ (6) Solving the above equation in view of initial conditions i.e. at t =, f = f in and at t = t f, f = f fin ; leads to, f fin = f eq + (f in f eq )e t f τ, (7) where t f is the freeze-out time. Using Eq.7, the nuclear modification factor can be exressed as, = f fin = f ( eq + f ) eq e t f τ (8) f in f in f in Eq. 8 is the derived nuclear modification factor after incororating relaxation time aroximation, which is the basis of our analysis in the resent aer. It involves the (ower law-like) initial distribution and the equilibrium distribution. In this analysis, the initial distribution is arameterized using the thermodynamically consistent sallis distribution [23]. sallis statistics is widely used to analyse the detected article sectra in high-energy collisions starting from e + e, + to heavy-ions [24,25,26,27,28,29,3,3,32,33,34,35, 36,37,38,39,4,4]. Also, as the system stays away from thermal equilibrium during the formation of highly energetic articles immediately after the collision, the article distribution can be arameterized with the hel of sallis distribution. A thermodynamically consistent nonextensive sallis distribution function, to be used as the initial distribution, is given by, [23] f in = gv [ (2π) 2 m + (q ) m ] q q, (9) which is used for studying the article distribution stemming from the roton-roton collisions as discussed in Ref. [23]. he Boltzmann equilibrium distribution is given by f eq = gv (2π) 2 m e m eq () Here, V is the system volume, m = 2 + m2 is the transverse mass and q is the non-extensive arameter, which measures the degree of deviation from equilibrium. Using Eqs. 9 and (both for mid-raidity and for zero chemical otential) nuclear modification factor can be exressed as, e m eq = ( + (q ) m [ e m eq ) q q ( + (q ) m ) q q ] + e t f τ () his will be comared to exerimental results in the next section. 3 Results and Discussion o illustrate the formula given in Eq. we take as an examle the case of the J/ψ article. he variation of nuclear modification factor with transverse momentum for

It is observed that for higher values of q, decreases for all the values of. his suggests that when the initial distribution remains closer to equilibrium, the suression becomes less. he model resented here fails to describe the increase in at larger transverse momenta, which is seen in exerimental data for light flavor hadrons q=. q=. q=. Fig. : Nuclear modification factor versus for different values of the non-extensive arameter using sallis Boltzmann distribution as shown in Eq.. Here m = 3.96 GeV, eq =.6 GeV, =.7 GeV and t f /τ =.6. We now roceed to the more detailed analysis of the exerimental data with the model roosed above. Keeing all the arameters free, we fit the sectra for different articles in different centralities for Pb+Pb and Au+Au collisions using Minuit class available in ROO library [42] to get a convergent solution. he convergent solution is obtained by χ 2 minimization technique. Here, q and t f /τ are the fitting arameters for the exerimental data. he equilibrium temerature eq is fixed to 6 MeV throughout the analysis. In our analysis, it is observed that the fitting of low for light flavor articles fails due to the reason that it involves different hysical rocesses such as regeneration, coalescence, shadowing etc., which are out for the scoe of resent formalism. But in heavy flavor articles, no such rocesses are involved at the discussed energies. hus our roosed model exlains successfully the heavy flavor data. Also, for very high-, our model fails to exlain the increase in (most rominent for K ± in Fig. 3). Finally, we have shown the variation of t f /τ with mass in Fig. 9. It is observed that t f /τ decreases with increasing the article mass, which suggests that the heavy articles have more relaxation time comared to lighter articles. Note here, that t f is the freeze-out time, and τ is the relaxation time, which differs from article to article, as the equilibration deends on the article secies and their interaction with the rest of the medium. Intuitively, the heavier the article is, the more is the relaxation time. We lug the initial distribution (f in ) in Boltzmann ransort Equation (BE) and solve it with the hel of Relaxation ime Aroximation (RA) of the collision term to find out the final distribution (f fin ). Also, we analyse the exerimental data from RHIC and LHC with calculated nuclear modification factor. It is observed that the calculated exlains accurately for heavy flavor articles in all range, but it can only exlain for light flavor articles in intermediate to high- range with an excetion for kaons, where the enhancement at high- can not be exlained with the resent model. he relaxation time, as found from data, is higher for heavy articles.
