Jet roerties from di-hadron correlations in + collisions at s= GeV Jan Rak for the PHENIX collaboration arxiv:he-ex/77v 8 Jan 7 Abstract Deartment of Physics P.O.Box 5 (YFL) Jyväskylä FI-44 University of Jyväskylä Finland, EUROPE An analysis of high hadron sectra associated with high π articles in + collisions at s= GeV is resented. he shae of the azimuthal angular correlation is used to determine the value of artonic intrinsic momentum k =.68 ±.7(stat) ±.4(sys) GeV/c. he effect of k -smearing of inclusive π cross section is discussed. Key words: jets, arton, intrinsic momentum, k -smearing, fragmentation PACS: 5.75.Dw Introduction An observation of similar suression atter attern of heavy and light quarks at RHIC (see e.g []) initiated a discussion on detailed mechanism of arton energy loss in the exited nuclear medium [,]. In order to exlain the relatively strong suression atterns of high electrons from semi-letonic D and B mesons decays, collisional energy loss has to be taken into account. However, this tye of arton interaction with the exited nuclear medium should lead to the broadening of the away-side correlation eak [4]. Recent measurements of high trigger-associated articles do not indicate such a broadening [5] although for the trigger transverse momentum t GeV/c with lower associated articles, significant broadening is observed [6]. It is evident that the measurement of jet fragmentation roerties and intrinsic arton transverse momentum k for + collisions is vital for the understanding of QCD henomena and it also rovides an imortant baseline for comarison to the results in heavy ion collisions. Prerint submitted to Elsevier February 8
In the center-of-mass of the hard collision the two scattered artons roagate back-to-back with the oosite momenta. In the center-of-mass of the + collision a finite net air results in an acolanarity and momentum imbalance of the di-jet which is measured as k. In the case of the Drell-Yan roccess the di-leton net air momentum reflects directly the magnitudes of k vectors of q q arton air in the annihilation rocess. In the case of di-hadron correlation the jet fragmentation rocess is involved and it is commonly acceted to characterize the di-hadron acolanarity by quantity = t a / t, the transverse momentum comonent of the away-side article a erendicular to trigger article t (for more details see [7]). It is believed that the origin of k is three fold: I. Fermi motion induced by the finite transverse size of the nucleon wave-function. II. Soft gluon showering (see e.g [8]). III. Hard next to leading order radiation. he contribution to the k from the Fermi motion is /r N = MeV/c where r N, the transverse size of the nucleon wave-function, is of order of fm. However, the measured values of k over the broad range of center-ofmass energies are as large as 5 GeV/c [9]. he main contribution to k comes ] - nucleon - GeV [cm σ d d E s=7 GeV 7<M µµ <8 x 8<M µµ < µµ Fig.. Left anel: Muon air transverse momentum distribution for the invariant mass in 7 < M µµ < 8 (solid triangles) and 8 < M µµ < 9 GeV/c (emty triangles) range measured in the fixed target exeriment ( beam =4 GeV/c) []. he solid lines reresent the Gaussian fit in the < µµ < GeV/c. Dashed line reresent the extraolation of the fit function u to µµ =5 GeV/c region. Right anel: out distribution measured by PHENIX exeriment in d + Au collision at s= GeV/c []. from the from the Gaussian-like soft gluon showering (see Fig ) and can be reroduced relatively well by resummation technique [8]. he µµ-air distributions for the two different invariant mass bins (data taken from []) are shown on the uer anel and of Fig. It is evident that the Gaussian shae dominates over the entire range of measured µµ with a hint of small excess above µµ =-4 GeV/c. he out measurement at higher s regime
reveals also similar Gaussian shae with more ronounced enhancement at large values of out indicating resence of NLO radiation. k 4 s= GeV;.4< <5. GeV/c a D RMS(k ) at s=6.4 GeV ythia k =.7±. CCOR measurement of values at s=6.4 GeV (oen triangles) []. he solid line reresent the PYHIA simulation with k =.7 GeV/c. he gray band corresond to the variation of the inut k value by ±. GeV/c. Right anel: Extracted k values when ˆx h and z t were evaluated analytically (see [7]). he solid lines reresent the systematic error bars originating mainly from the uncertainty on the fragmentation function. CCOR data (oen triangles) the same as on the left anel. In this analysis we used the two-article azimuthal correlation function to determine out for different trigger ( t ) and associated ( a ) article transverse momentum bins (for details see [7]). We have shown that the out value can be related to k as z t (k, x h ) k ˆx h (k, x h ) = x h out j y ( + x h ) () where x h = a / t and j y is the jet fragmentation transverse momentum comonent in the azimuthal lane. All quantities on the right-hand side of Eq. () can be directly extracted from the correlation function while the lefthand side corresonds to the roduct of k, ˆx h = ˆ a / ˆ t, the ratio of the mean associated to trigger arton momenta, and z t = t /ˆ t, the mean momentum fraction carried by the trigger article. he ˆx h quantity accounts for the jet momenta imbalance due to the k bias (k vector is more likely to be colinear with the trigger jet for events selected with the t > a condition). he z t quantity accounts for the fact that even when the trigger article momentum t is fixed, the trigger arton momentum ˆ t varies with a, the
transverse momentum of associated articles. Measured ˆx h z t k values for different trigger article momenta t are shown on Fig.. In order to determine the k values we have to evaluate the ˆx h and z t quantities. We assumed that z t zt Dπ(z q t ) x t s/ Σ q (ˆ ) π ˆ n G(ˆ n ) D q π( a ˆ a ) ˆ a dφ dˆ dz t () where ˆ n =k t +k a is a net arton-air momentum, G(ˆ n ) = ex( ˆ n / k ) describes the Gaussian robability of the net air momentum magnitude distribution, Σ q (ˆ ) is the unsmeared final state arton momentum distribution, Dπ q is the fragmentation function. he ˆx h quantity can be evaluated in the similar way as z t (for details see k smearing section of [7]). As it has been demonstrated in [7] it is not ossible to extract the fragmentation function from di-hadron correlations, thus we used the Dπ q arameters extracted from e + + e data [,4]. he final values of k for various values of t are dislayed on Fig. (solid circles). he average value obtained is k =.68 ±.7(stat) ±.4(sys) GeV/c. c ] - [mb GeV σ/d E*d k =.7 GeV/c +->π +X D(z) Σ k Σ q Σ kt air 6 4 Dimuons Dijets Dihotons PHENIX s [GeV] Fig.. Left anel: π invariant cross section from [5]. he dashed lined (Σ q ) corresonds to the ower law arameterization of the finall state arton sectra before fragmentation. he dotted line (Σ k ) is the k -smeared Σ q function. he solid line corresonds to the folding of Σ k with the f ragmentation function. Right anel: Net arton air momentum air = π/ k is comared to comilation from [9]. We have also studied the effect of k smearing on the inclusive article distributions. Although the NLO calculation without intrinsic k shows relatively good agreement with an inclusive π invariant cross section [5], we have found 4
that there is a good agreement with the data when we erform a k -smearing of arametrized arton sectra by k magnitude.7 GeV/c (see left anel of Fig. ). he π cross section was calculated as a folding D(z) Σ k ( z ), where Σ k ( ) is the smeared final state arton sectrum. he unsmeared (Σ q ) and k - smeared (Σ k ) final state arton sectra are shown as a dashed and dotted lines on the left anel of Fig.. he value of the net-transverse momentum of the air found in this analysis is shown on the right anel of Fig.. his value aears to be with a good agreement with the world data from [9]. It is interesting to note that at LHC energies the magnitude of k will be as large as 5-7 GeV/c. References [] PHENIX, S. S. Adler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, (6), nuclex/547. [] S. Wicks, W.
