1 The Viscosity of Quark-Gluon Plasma at RHIC and the LHC Ulrich Heinz, Chun Shen and Huichao Song Deartment of Physics, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 436, USA Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California 947, USA arxiv: v1 [nucl-th] 6 Aug 11 Abstract. The secific shear viscosity () QGP of quark-gluon lasma (QGP) can be extracted from ellitic flow data in heavy-ion collisions by comaring them with the dynamical model which coules a viscous fluid dynamic descrition of the QGP with a microscoic kinetic descrition of the late hadronic rescattering and freeze-out stage. A robust method for fixing() QGP from the collision centrality deendence of the eccentricity-scaled charged hadron ellitic flow is resented. The systematic uncertainties associated with this extraction method are discussed, with secific attention to our resently restricted knowledge of initial conditions. With the () QGP extracted in this way, yields an excellent descrition of all soft-hadron data from Au+Au collisions at to RHIC energy. Extraolations to Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC, using both a urely hydrodynamic aroach and, are resented and comared with recent exerimental results from the ALICE Collaboration. The LHC data are again well described by, with the same () QGP value as at RHIC energies. Keywords: Hydrodynamics, quark-gluon lasma, heavy-ion collisions, eccentricity, shear viscosity, ellitic flow, hybrid aroach PACS: q, 1.38.Mh, 5.75.Ld, 4.1.Nz HOW TO MEASURE () QGP Relativistic heavy-ion collisions create satially deformed fireballs of hot, dense matter in both non-central and (due to event-by-event shae fluctuations) central collisions. Hydrodynamics converts this initial satial deformation into final state momentum anisotroies. Viscosity degrades the conversion efficiency ε x = y x y +x ε = T xx T yy T xx +T yy of the fluid (x and y are the directions transverse to the beam direction z); for given initial fireball elliticity ε x, the viscous suression of the dynamically generated total momentum anisotroy ε is monotonically related to the secific shear viscosity. The observable most directly related to ε is the total charged hadron ellitic flow v ch [1]. Its distribution in deends on the chemical comosition and -sectra of the various hadron secies; the latter evolve in the hadronic stage due to continuously increasing radial flow (and so does ( )), even if (as exected at to LHC energy []) ε fully saturates in the QGP hase. When (as it haens at RHIC energies) ε does not reach saturation before hadronization, dissiative hadronic dynamics [3] affects not only the distribution of ε over hadron secies and, but even the final value of ε itself, and thus v ch from which we want to extract. To isolate the QGP viscosity() QGP we therefore need a hybrid code that coules viscous hydrodynamics of the QGP to a realistic model of the late hadronic stage, such as UrQMD [4], that describes its dynamics microscoically. [5], a hybrid of VISH+1 (Viscous Israel-Stewart Hydrodynamics in +1 dimensions [6]) and UrQMD, is such a code. () QGP AT RHIC The left anel in Fig. 1 shows that such an aroach yields a universal deendence of the elliticity-scaled total charged hadron ellitic flow, v ch x, on the charged hadron multilicity density er overla area,(1/s)(dn ch /dy), that deends only on () QGP but not on the details of the initial state model that rovides ε x and S [7]. Pre-equilibrium flow and bulk viscous effects on these curves are small [7]. The QGP viscosity can be extracted from exerimental v ch data by comaring them with these universal curves. The right anels of Fig. 1 show this for MC-Glauber and initial state models (lease see [7] and references therein for a descrition of these models). In both cases the sloe of the data [8] is correctly reroduced; this is not the case for ideal nor for viscous hydrodynamics with constant. Due to the % larger elliticity of the fireballs, the magnitude of v ch,ex x differs between the two models. Consequently, the value of () QGP extracted from this comarison changes by more than a factor between them. Relative to the initial fireball elliticity all other model uncertainties are negligible. Without constraining ε x more recisely, () QGP cannot be determined to better

All calculations in Fig. 1 and following below were done in "single-shot" mode, where the ensemble of fluctuating Monte Carlo initial states was first averaged in the articiant lane [7] to obtain a smooth average initial density rofile and then evolved just once through the hydrodynamic stage. Event-by-event evolution of each fluctuating initial state searately and erforming the ensemble average only at the end may roduce somewhat less ellitic flow and thus slightly reduce the () QGP values extracted from comarison with the data [13]. The magnitude of this reduction deends on() QGP [1] but is not exected to exceed (-.3)/4π [13]. dn/( dy d ) (GeV - ) 1 7 %~5%* %~1%*1 1%~15%* %~%*1 %~3%/ %~4%/ %~5%/1 3 5%~6%/ %~7%/ %~8%/ PHENIX STAR MC-Glauber (a) dn/( dy d ) (GeV - ) 1 3 %~1%* %~%*1 1 %~4% 1-1 4%~6%/ %~8%/ /s =. Exerimental data are from STAR and PHENIX, theoretical lines from (see [14] for details and references). After aroriate adjustment of initial conditions [14] the -sectra are seen to be insensitive to the QGP viscosity whereas the ellitic flow deends strongly on it. For MC-Glauber initial conditions (uer right anels)() QGP =.8 works well, for (bottom right anels)() QGP =6 works well for all collision centralities. In each case, changing () QGP by.8 destroys the agreement between theory and data. with () QGP = 1 4π for MC-Glauber and 4π for rovides an excellent descrition of all asects of soft ( <1.5 GeV) hadron roduction ( -sectra and differential ( ) for all charged hadrons together as well as for individual identified secies) in A GeV Au+Au collisions at all but the most eriheral collision centralities [14]. As an examle we show in Fig. -sectra and differential ellitic flow for identified and 1 It has been suggested [9, 1, 11, 1] that the ambiguity between the MC-Glauber and elliticities which lies at the origin of this uncertainty can be resolved by simultaneously analyzing ellitic and triangular flow, and v 3.

3 (resonance decay contributions are included). Such a level of theoretical control is unrecedented. () QGP AT THE LHC The successful comrehensive fit of soft hadron sectra and ellitic flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC shown in Fig. and elaborated on in more detail in Refs. [14, 15] allows for tightly constrained LHC redictions. Fig. 3 shows such redictions for both ure viscous hydrodynamics VISH+1 [15] and [16]. A straightforward extraolation with STAR ALICE {4} Reaction Plane RHIC: =6 LHC: =6 LHC: = LHC: = centrality (%) AuAu@ PbPb@, /s = RHIC LHC + ~3% FIGURE 3. (Color online) Total charged hadron ellitic flow as function of centrality (, left [16]) and differential ellitic flow for identified hadrons for -3% centrality (VISH+1, right [15]) for A GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC and.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. Exerimental data are from [17]. fixed() QGP overredicts the LHC v ch values by 1-15%; a slight increase of() QGP from 6 to (for MC- KLN) gives better agreement with the ALICE data [17]. However, at LHC energies becomes sensitive to details of the initial shear stress rofile [15], and no firm conclusion can be drawn yet whether the QGP turns more viscous (i.e. less strongly couled) at higher temeratures. Furthermore, ALICE [18] has noted a discreancy between the /π ratio measured in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC and the value observed by STAR in Au+Au collisions at RHIC. The latter has a strong influence on the value of the chemical decouling temerature imlemented in the model. We use T chem =165 MeV which nicely fits the normalization of the roton sectra from STAR but overredicts those from PHENIX by a factor 1.5 (left anel in Fig. ). The /π ratio measured by ALICE at the LHC agrees with the PHENIX value measured at RHIC (see Fig. 7 in [18]) but is smaller by a factor 1.5 than what is imlemented in the LHC redictions from Refs. [15, 16]. Corresondingly, our redictions of the sectra for Pb+Pb@LHC [15] overredict the measured sectra by this factor [18]. Reducing the /π ratio to the measured value will reduce the charged hadron ellitic flow [19]. To to the larger radial flow, this reductions is stronger at the LHC than at RHIC. This may account for the 15% overrediction of v ch for() QGP=6 at the LHC seen in the left anel of Fig. 3. The right anel of this figure shows that, at fixed <1 GeV, ( ) increases from RHIC to LHC for but decreases for all heavier hadrons. The similarity at RHIC and LHC of v ch () for the sum of all charged hadrons noted in Ref. [17] thus aears accidental. As a result of this shift of the ellitic flow to larger for heavier articles, which is caused by the stronger radial flow at the LHC, the mass-slitting between the ( ) curves for different mass hadrons grows from RHIC to LHC. This redicted growth has been confirmed by ALICE (see Fig. 6 in []). As mentioned in footnote, the urely hydrodynamic simulations based on VISH+1 with constant = fail to correctly reroduce the centrality deendence of the roton ellitic flow v (). Esecially in central collisions, v () is overredicted at small (see Fig. in [1]), i.e. the radial flow ushing the ellitic flow to higher (and We note that the urely hydrodynamic model VISH+1 does almost equally well, with() QGP = for initial conditions [15], excet for the centrality deendence of the differential ellitic flow ( ) for. We will see a similar failure of VISH+1 for Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC further below. The main difference to is that, in order to generate enough radial flow at freeze-out, VISH+1 must be started earlier (τ =.6 instead of 1.5 fm/c) because it lacks the highly dissiative hadronic hase that generates additional radial flow in at late times (in the VISH+1 simulations is held constant at until hadronic freeze-out). The variation with collision centrality of the final balance between radial and ellitic flow turns out to be correct in (where more of the radial flow develos later) but incorrect in VISH+1 (where more of it is created early).

4 thereby reducing ( ) at low ) as generated by the model is not strong enough in central collisions. The same roblem is seen in Fig. 4 for the extraolation of VISH+1 to LHC energies: whereas the ion and kaon ellitic flows at <1.5 GeV/c are well described at all collision centralities, there aears to be a lack of radial flow in central and semi-central collisions such that the roton is not ushed towards larger as strongly as seen in the data. This roblem disaears in the more eriheral bins, indicating an incorrect centrality deendence of the balance between radial and ellitic flow in the VISH+1 model %~1% 3%~4% data: ALICE Preliminary 1%~% 4%~5% %~3% ion kaon anti-roton VISH+1 ( /s = ) %~6% FIGURE 4. (Color online) Differential ellitic flow, {}( ), for, and anti- from.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions at different centralities, as measured by ALICE (reliminary data reorted at Quark Matter 11 [, 1]), comared with VISH+1 calculations using initial conditions with = [15]. As was the case at RHIC energies, this roblem is removed when relacing the hydrodynamic descrition of the late hadronic hase with low = by a microscoic kinetic descrition using (see Fig. 5). The calculations shown in Fig. 5 were done rimarily to understand systematic differences between the redictions for sectra and ellitic flow from VISH+1 and. For this reason they were erformed with the same value = in the QGP hase, even though the calculations for identified hadrons from Au+Au at RHIC [14] had shown a slight reference for the smaller value() QGP =6. Fig. 5 shows that the roblem with the lack of radial flow in central collisions that was seen in Fig. 4 has been resolved: for the 5%-1% and 1%-% centrality bins, describes the differential u to = GeV/c almost erfectly, for all three article secies. Looking closely, one observes a slight (6%) underrediction of ( ) for all three article secies. This underrediction gets stronger in more eriheral collisions (reaching 9% at 5%-6% centrality) a clear sign that we have slightly overestimated() QGP. (Since, for fixed, viscous effects increase in inverse roortion to the fireball size [6], an overestimate of will lead to an underrediction of ( ) that grows with the imact arameter of the collisions.) We are confident that, after reducing() QGP to 6, the data will be well described at all collision centralities. Corresonding simulations are in rogress. CONCLUSIONS The hybrid model, which describes the evolution of the dense and strongly couled quark-gluon lasma hase macroscoically using viscous fluid dynamics and that of the dilute late hadronic rescattering and freeze-out stage microscoically using a kinetic aroach, rovides a comrehensive quantitative descrition of the bulk matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC.
