1 arxiv:8.6v [he-ex] Feb 8 MA Wigner RCP varga-kofarago.monika@wigner.mta.hu In heavy-ion collisions, the quark gluon lasma is exected to be roduced, which is an almost erfect liquid that made u the Universe a few microseconds after the Big Bang. In these collisions, jets are also formed from hadronizing artons with high transverse momentum, and they traverse the hot and dense medium and interact with it. heir roerties can be modified by these interactions, therefore these modifications, if resent, can give insight into the roerties of the lasma itself. Angular correlation measurements can be used to study jets in Pb Pb collisions in a transverse momentum ( ) regime where jets are not easily reconstructable above the fluctuating background. Small collision systems (e.g., or Pb) can be used as reference for these measurements; however, these collisions themselves are of interest. For examle, article roduction mechanisms and conservation laws can be tested in these systems. Results from Pb Pb and collisions recorded by the ALICE detector are resented in this aer. th International Worksho on High- Physics in the RHIC/LHC Era -5 October, 7 University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway Seaker. on behalf of the ALICE collaboration. c Coyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4. 2 . Introduction In high energy collisions, quark-antiquark airs are roduced, which fragment and hadronize into a sray of collimated hadrons, called jets. hese jets interact with the hot and dense medium and their interactions can be studied in angular correlation measurements. In these measurements, the distribution of the azimuthal angle ( ϕ) and seudoraidity ( η) difference of a trigger and an associated object is extracted. hese objects can be identified or unidentified hadrons or even the jets themselves. Deending on the tye of the object, different roerties of the lasma and of the interactions can be studied. he data used for the resented measurements were collected by the ALICE detector, of which a detailed descrition can be found in Ref. []. he ALICE detector has good tracking caabilities down to low transverse momentum ( ) and excellent article identification, making it suitable for studying heavy-ion collisions as well as small collision systems (e.g., or Pb).. Hadron-hadron correlations in Pb Pb In angular correlation measurements of two hadrons, i.e., when the trigger and associated objects are both hadrons, jets aear as a eak around ( ϕ, η) = (,) (near side) and an elongated structure in η at ϕ = π (away side). By studying the centrality (the overla of the two nuclei) and deendence of these structures in Pb Pb collisions, the modifications of the jets while traversing the hot and dense medium can be exlored. In Fig., yields from Pb Pb collisions of the jet eak and of the away-side structure divided by the same from collisions (denoted by I AA ) are shown for unidentified hadron-hadron and π hadron correlations as a function of the of the associated article []. A small enhancement on the near side and a small suression on the away side can be seen at large, while at low, there is a large enhancement in both. he results are comatible in the unidentified and the identified cases in the region where both are mea- I AA.8.6 ALICE, % Pb Pb, trig 8 < < 6 GeV/c Near side ( ϕ <.7) π hadron (v bkg) n di hadron (v bkg) s NN =.76 ev I AA 5 4 ALICE, % Pb Pb, trig 8 < < 6 GeV/c Away side π hadron (v bkg) n ϕ π <. di hadron (v bkg) ϕ π <.7 s NN =.76 ev ALI PUB 475 assoc ALI PUB 47 assoc Figure : Yield from Pb Pb collisions divided by the yield from collisions (denoted as I AA ) as a function of the of the associated articles for hadron-hadron and π hadron correlations. 3 sured. he away-side suression can be exlained by arton energy loss, while the enhancement at low can originate from several sources (e.g., k broadening, medium-excitation or fragments from radiated gluons [ 7]). he enhancement on the near side might arise from a change of the fragmentation function or the quark-to-gluon jet ratio [8]. Aart from the yield of the jet eak, the shae of the eak can also be modified by the interaction of the artons of the jets with the medium. In Fig., the width of the eak from Pb Pb collisions can be seen as a function of the centrality, and the results from collisions are shown as a reference [9, ]. he eak at low gets broader towards central collisions in Pb Pb collisions in both the ϕ and the η directions. In eriheral collisions, it converges to the value in collisions in the ϕ direction, while in the η direction even the eriheral Pb Pb results are above the results. At low, the width is larger in the η direction at the same and centrality than in the ϕ direction, resulting in an asymmetric eak. he multilicity deendence of the yield and the width was also measured in collisions and only a very small deendence was found, therefore the use of minimum bias data as a reference was validated. In Pb Pb collisions, at the lowest measured and at the highest centrality, an unexected deletion around ( ϕ, η) = (, ) is seen [9, ]. In Fig. a, this deletion is illustrated, while in Fig. b, the magnitude of the missing yield is resented. he results from hadron-hadron correlations in Pb Pb collisions were comared to A Multi-Phase ransort (AMP) model [, ], which exhibits both the broadening and the deletion with the settings used, and also show large radial flow. his comarison suggests therefore that these features are caused by an interlay of the jets with the flowing medium.

Path-length deendence in Pb Pb he deendence on the length of the ath the artons of a jet traveled in the medium can be characterized with different methods. Firstly, two-lus-one correlations are resented. In these studies, the angular distributions are calculated for two back-to-back trigger hadrons. he first trigger hadron has a higher, therefore it is assumed that this has traveled a shorter length in the lasma and has lost less energy than its back-to-back artner. he associated articles with this trigger article form a eak, which corresonds to the leading jet. he associated articles with the second trigger hadron also form a eak, which corresonds to the back-to-back jet, the artons of which have traveled a longer ath in the medium. he yield in central Pb Pb collisions divided by the yield from eriheral collisions (I CP ) from the eak for both trigger articles is shown in Fig. 4. In the case when the two trigger articles have similar (Fig. 4a), the I CP corresonding to the two trigger articles are the same, while in the case when the second trigger article has a much lower than the first (Fig. 4b), the I CP belonging to the second trigger article is enhanced at low. his can be exlained by a ath length deendent suression, but other exlanations (e.g., a bias on the trigger selection) are also ossible. Secondly, the ath length deendence of jets can be studied by taking jets as the trigger objects and restricting their direction with resect to the direction of the event lane (the lane defined by the direction of the colliding nuclei and the vector connecting the centers of the colliding nuclei). In this way, jets that are arallel with the event lane travel a smaller ath in the medium than jets that go erendicular to the event lane. In Fig. 5, the yield of hadrons associated with jets is resented for three categories of jets deending on their angle with resect to the event lane. he yields agree within uncertainties for the three cases, therefore no deendence on the ath length is found. his suggests that the modifications seen from the two-lus-one correlations are connected to another effect.

Small systems Angular correlations of identified articles in small systems can be used to study the roduction mechanisms and different conservation laws of the studied articles. In Fig. 6, identified hadron-hadron correlations are resented from collisions []. When mesons (e.g., ions or kaons) are considered, a jet eak is visible, as exected, in both the like-sign and the unlike-sign case (not shown here). However, when baryons are considered, the jet eak is only visible in the unlike-sign case (Fig. 6a). In the like-sign case, a deletion is resent instead of the eak (Fig. 6b). he size of this deletion is the same if rotons or Λ articles are considered, and it is not described by models, therefore its origin is currently not understood. 4

Summary Angular correlation measurements are owerful tools to study the interaction of the artons of jets with the medium in heavy-ion correlations, and to study the roduction mechanisms and conservation laws in small systems. In Pb Pb collisions, an enhancement of the jet-eak yield and a broadening of the jet eak at low transverse momentum in central collisions were resented together with an unexected deletion around ( ϕ, η) = (,). Furthermore, studies on the ath length deendence of the measured quantities were shown, with no clear ath length deendence observed. Finally, measurements from collisions were resented, where an unexected deletion of the jet eak is visible when baryon-baryon like-sign correlations are studied.
