We find that, by detecting a fast and forward neutron in the final state, an almost on-shell K is guaranteed, which is essential to make a bound state with two nucleons from 3 He. Then, this almost on-shell K can bring a signal of the KNN bound state in the invariantmass sectrum, although it inevitably brings a kinematic eak above the KNN threshold as well. As a consequence, we redict two eaks across the KNN threshold in the sectrum: the lower eak coming from the KNN bound state, and the higher one originating from the kinematics. 2 1. Introduction Among various combinations of hadrons, the antikaon ( K) and nucleon (N) form one of the most interesting airs. The K meson is a Nambu-Goldstone boson of the sontaneous chiral symmetry breaking of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), which constrains the KN interaction to be strongly attractive in a model indeendent manner. This chiral KN interaction together with its couled channels dynamically generates the (1405) resonance [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. Recently it was shown that the (1405) resonance in chiral dynamics was indeed a KN bound state [7, 8] in terms of the comositeness [9, 10, 11]. Because the KN interaction is attractive enough to make a bound state as the (1405) resonance, we exect that there should exist bound states of K and nuclei, which are called kaonic nuclei. Motivations to study kaonic nuclei are: they are exotic states of many-body systems interacting strongly, and rovide us with a test field of the KN interaction and behavior of a strange quark in finite nuclear density. For kaonic nuclei, in articular for the simlest kaonic nucleus, i.e., the KNN bound state or the K state, many exerimental searches and theoretical redictions have been erformed, but even their existence is still controversial (see review in Ref. [12]). In this line, the result from the J-PARC E15 exeriment [13, 14] is very romising. In the J-PARC E15 exeriment, they observed the K 3 He n reaction with the initial kaon of momentum 1 GeV/c, a fast and forward neutron in the final state, and no sectator nucleon. As a result of the E15 first run, they found a eak structure near the K threshold as the black oints and blue bands in Fig. 1, which could be a signal of a KNN bound state. In order to understand the reaction mechanism and to investigate how this eak is constructed, we erform a theoretical analysis on this reaction. Details of the calculations are rovided in Refs. [15, 16, 17]. 2. Theoretical analysis on the K 3 He n reaction In the J-PARC E15 exeriment, they bombarded a 3 He target with K s of momentum 1 GeV/c dσ / dm [ µb / GeV ] KNN E15 data E15 fit M [ GeV ] Figure 1: invariant-mass sectrum of the K 3 He n reaction [17]. Our theoretical result, shown as the thick red line, is obtained in the scenario that the KNN bound state is generated [15]. The exerimental (E15) data and its fit are taken from Ref. [14] and shown in arbitrary units. 1
3 n T 1 K N 2 = N 1 N 3 K 3 He (a) (b) Figure 2: (a) Feynman diagram most relevant to the three-nucleon absortion of an in-flight K, and (b) multile K scattering and absortion [15]. In (b), the dashed lines and circles reresent K and KN KN amlitude, resectively. and observed the K 3 He n reaction with forward neutron in the final state and no sectator nucleon. This reaction can be exressed as the diagram in Fig. 2. In the first ste of the reaction, the K kicks out a fast and forward final-state neutron and loses its energy. The amlitude of this first collision is calculated so as to reroduce the exerimental values of the cross sections of K n K n and K K 0 n. Because both the K n K n and K K 0 n cross sections have their local or global minima when the final-state neutron goes forward, the K 3 He n reaction favors the forward neutron emission comared to the middleangle emission. Then, the slow K after the first collision roagates and is absorbed into two nucleons from 3 He. An imortant oint is that this slow K can create a kinematic eak because the roagating K can go almost on its mass shell, which largely enhances the K roagator. In order to see this effect, we calculate the differential cross section of the K 3 He n reaction according to the Feynman diagram in Fig. 2 but neglecting the contribution from the shaded box, i.e., making it unity. This means that we neglect dynamics of the slow K with two nucleons, which may generate the KNN d 2 σ / dm dcosθ n cm [ Arb. unit ] cosθ n cm = M [ GeV ] Figure 3: Differential cross section of the K 3 He n reaction but neglecting KNN dynamics. 2
4 bound state. The result is shown in Fig. 3. As one can see, even if we do not have KNN dynamics, we obtain a eak structure whose eak osition is just above the KNN threshold = 2.37 GeV. The eak osition shifts uward as the neutron angle becomes larger, which can be exlained by the kinematics of the quasi-elastic kaon scattering in the first collision. Now let us take into account KNN dynamics and transition KNN. Because all the three articles, K and two nucleons, are slow in the resent reaction mechanism, the multile K scattering as in Fig. 2(b) should be essential in general. Actually, if we truncate the scattering in Fig. 2(b) u to the first term in the right-hand side [uncorrelated (1405) scenario], we cannot reroduce the behavior of the lower tail 2.3 GeV in the exerimental invariant-mass sectrum [15]. In this study, we calculate the multile K scattering in the so-called fixed center aroximation [18, 19]. By including the two-nucleon absortion width for K in a henomenological way, we obtain a KNN bound state with its ole osition at i MeV [15]. This multile K scattering creates the eak structure in the invariant-mass sectrum as the red thick line in Fig. 1. Our mass sectrum is consistent with the exerimental one within the resent error. An interesting finding is that we redict two eaks across the KNN threshold in the sectrum. The lower eak comes from the KNN bound state, which reroduces the tail at the lower energy 2.3 GeV qualitatively well. This means that our sectrum suorts the exlanation that the E15 signal in the 3 He(K, )n reaction is indeed a signal of the KNN bound state. On the other hand, the higher eak originates from the kinematics, i.e., from the almost on-shell K denoted in Fig. 3. Because using almost on-shell K is essential to make a KNN bound state in this reaction, this inevitably brings a kinematic eak above the KNN threshold in the hysical mass sectrum. 3. Summary We exect that kaonic nuclei should exist owing to the strongly attractive interaction between antikaon and nucleon. Even the existence of kaonic nuclei is still controversial, but a eak structure which could be a signal of the simlest kaonic nucleus, the KNN bound state, was recently found in the in-flight 3 He(K, )n reaction in the J-PARC E15 exeriment. In order to understand the mechanism of the reaction, we theoretically analyzed the reaction observed in the J-PARC E15 exeriment. We found that, by detecting a fast and forward neutron in the final-state, an almost on-shell K is guaranteed, which is essential to make a bound state with two nucleons from 3 He. This almost on-shell K can bring a signal of the KNN bound state in the invariant-mass sectrum, although it inevitably brings a kinematic eak above the KNN threshold as well. As a consequence, we redicted two eaks across the KNN threshold in the sectrum: the lower eak coming from the KNN bound state, and the higher one originating from the kinematics. We finally note that the redicted two-eak structure is indeed imlied by the data of the E15 second run, where 30 times more statistics of the same reaction are accumulated [20]. This will suort more strongly that the E15 signal in the 3 He(K, )n reaction is indeed a signal of the KNN bound state. References [1] N. Kaiser, P. B. Siegel and W.
