1 . N. edelinghuys 'It isn't a nise...' r errmers
2 Everyhere e g, ele ten ask me, 'H d yu make that nise?' It used t end me because it isn't a nise, it's my language. They didn't understand that Xhsa is my langue, and it's a ritten language. We use the same man alhabet in riting. The nly dierence is e rnunce certain letters dierently, such as the letter Q... the letter X... the letter C...' - Miriam Makeba (-00) Desite my embarrassingly limited knledge the Bantu languages, click cnsnants (hich are unique t Arica) ascinate me. Hever, Eurean audiences are seldm exsed t them (r the languages t hich they belng), and they have histrically been rngly vieed as rimitive: reresentative unshisticated languages. This iece is an attemt t celebrate the click cnsnants the Nguni languages, articularly Xhsa and Zulu, bth as ure sund, and in the cntext their resective languages. I. Nci - Small (Xhsa) r errmers (c. minutes + minute imrv. ad lib.) II. Xa - Greater (Zulu) r errmers (c. minutes) III. Qngqthane - A Wedding Sng (Xhsa) r errmers (c. minutes + minutes imrv. ad lib.) Perrmance Ntes It is imrtant t understand that the cus this iece is the click cnsnants (and the rds and syllables hich emly them) - the bdy ercussin exists t mirrr and enhance them. It is therere vital that they be sken crrectly. They can be initially diicult r nn-native seakers, r ele h d nt have a ear r them. The easiest ay t learn them is t irst learn each hne by itsel, bere cmbining them. Fr this, YuTube has a number excellent resurces. A laylist these resurces is available at g.gl/qetx. I uld als encurage the errmers t nte the reerences t the sng Qngqthane (als knn as the 'Click Sng', made amus by Miriam Makeba), and t gumbt dang (a style dance riginally created by gld miners). I uld strngly encurage errmers t atch and listen t emles these. The iece is cnstructed in hrase units, rather than bars. I have chsen t mit rests herever ssible t encurage reedm in the errmance, articularly in the reer, sustained sectins: here attacks and releases can be regarded as smehat arximate. Mre rhythmic assages necessitate mre ect rhythms, c-rdinated r nt as indicated. The duratins abve duble barlines indicate the length ause inbeteen the hrases. The length these duble barlines can be read as arximate (e.g. shrt/medium/lng).
3 There is n restrictin n the sex the errmers, hever there shuld be a gradatin rm high t l vice (errmer being the higher, errmer the lest). Sung assages shuld be errmed very lainly, ithut vibrat. Staging The errmance mves beteen ints n ideally a den stage. Each int shuld have micrhnes and music stands enugh t accmmdate errmers. Micrhnes b, c and d need t be sitched n and during errmance. Perrmers,, begin standing a Mic a. Perrmers,,,,, begin sitting stage. Mvement arund the stage shuld be luid and quiet. When at the same micrhne, errmers ith a ler number stand n stage right. Perrmers shuld all ear casual black (erhas ith a little clur), r clthing made Sheshe. They shuld all be either baret, r ear gumbts (the latter can be helul r 'thigh slas' and 't stams', esecially n less resnant stages, but errmers shuld be careul that n unanted sunds are rduced hen alking). Alternate versins: The iece is designed t be errmed in its entirety. Hever, the lling selectins may be errmed: mvement alne, mvement alne, mvements &, r mvements &.
