MITROFANOVA E-mil: mitrofnov@reitmeier.e rxiv:nlin/ v1 [nlin.cd] 10 Mr 2005 Reeive Otoer 1, 2003 DOI: /RD2003v008n04ABEH In this pper, we present results of simultions of moel of the Glton or for vrious egrees of elstiity of the ll-to-nil ollision. 1. Introution The Glton or is n upright or with evenly spe nils riven into its upperhlf. Thenils re rrnge in stggere orer. The lower hlf of the or is ivie with vertil slts into numer of nrrow retngulr slots. From the front, the whole instlltion is overe with glss over. In the mile of the upper ege, there is funnel in whih lls n e poure, the imeter of the lls eing muh smller thn the istne etween the nils. The funnel is lote preisely ove the entrl nil of the seon row, i. e. the ll, if perfetly entere, woul fll vertilly n iretly onto the uppermost point of this nil s surfe (Fig. 1). Theoretilly, the ll woul repetely oune off this nil s uppermost point. Oviously, suh motion of the ll is unstle. In ft, ue to unvoile inury in the or s positioning n impossiility to ompletely exlue the lterl omponent, no mtter how smll, of the ll s veloity, eh ll, generlly speking, woul meet the nil somewht oliquely. The ll woul then evite from the vertil line n, fter hving ollie with mny other nils, fll into one of the slots. If the experiment is run with lrge numer of lls, roppe one fter the other, then the following results re otine: the lls re istriute evenly to the left n to the right of the entrl omprtment (left n right evitions re equiprole). Besies, the lls woul more rrely fll into the leftmost n rightmost omprtments, for lrge evitions re more rre to pper thn Fig. 1 smll ones. However, espite the presene of nils n ll the imperfetions in the onstrution, the mjority of the lls will gglomerte in the entrl omprtment s this provies the smllest evition. The numer of lls in the omprtments woul pproximtely orrespon to the Gussin lw of errors. In the erlier experiments with the Glton or the funnel ws fille with pellets or millet grins. 2 432 REGULAR AND CHAOTIC DYNAMICS, V. 8, í4, 2003 V. V. KOZLOV, M. Yu. MITROFANOVA 2. Sttement of prolem In Glton or experiments ll-to-nil impts hve lwys een inelsti. In this pper, we present results of simultions of moel of the Glton or for vrious egrees of elstiity of the ll-to-nil ollision. We moel the ll s mss point. Hene, the ll s motion n e regre s the motion of mss point in vertil plne uner the tion of grvity ompnie with multiple ollisions with the nils. These ollisions re hrterize y the oeffiient of restitution e, whih ffets only the norml omponent of the ll s veloity fter the impt. The oeffiient of restitution is the first prmeter of the prolem. It n vry from 0 to 1. A vlue of e = 1 orrespons to solutely elsti impt for whih the ll s energy oes not hnge. The other extreme se, e = 0, orrespons to solutely inelsti impt: the ll stiks to the nil. The nil s rius R is the seon prmeter of the prolem. Sine the ll leves the funnel n flls onto the nil entrlly, ut possily with some smll eprture to the left or to the right, we opt tht the first rop of the ll oeys the Gussin lw. On the other hn, if the lls istriute uniformly over the funnel s opening, then their istriution over the retngulr omprtments will e fr from norml (Fig. 2). This istriution resemles the rsine lw. Inientlly, oring to Pul Levy, the istriution of time intervls over whih Brownin prtile is lote on the positive semi-xis, hs similr form. This oservtion is, proly, not just oiniene. The point is tht prtile in Brownin motion experienes lrge numer of rnom ollisions with moleules of the surrouning flui (in our se, the moleules re regulrly ple n fixe). Fig. 2. Aoringly, the prolem s thir prmeter is the vrine of the istriution of the lls over the funnel s opening. Thus, we introue three prmeters for the prolem: 1) the oeffiients of restitution e, 2) the nil s rius R, 3) the vrine σ 0 of the norml istriution of the first ll-tonil impt. It is lso neessry to hoose the imensions of the moel or. The geometry of the or shoul meet the two requirements: the lls shoul not reh the vertil ounries of the Glton or; eh ll shoul experiene t lest severl ollisions with the nils efore it gets into one of the retngulr omprtments. Figure 3 ( ) shows the lls istriution over the retngulr omprtments for ifferent imensions of the moel or, nmely, (), (), (), n (). In these ses, the three prmeters of the prolem re: e = 0.8, R = 0.7, n σ 0 = As we n see, the istriution of the lls looks similrly for ll the speifie imensions of the or, ut in
REGULAR AND CHAOTIC DYNAMICS, V. 8, í4, Fig. 3. the se of (Fig. 3) the lls o reh the vertil ounries of the moel Glton or. For the or, the lls no longer reh the ounries (Fig. 3). Further enlrgement of the moel or s imensions (its length n its height) oes not ffet the pttern of the lls istriution over the omprtments (Figs. 3, ), ut gretly inreses the omputtion time. Thus, the imensions of the moel Glton or n e set to without ny loss of qulity. So, we re going to investigte the properties of the lls istriution over the omprtments of the Glton or n the epeneny of the vrine of this istriution on the three speifie prmeters. 3. Mthemtil moel The metho of investigtion onsists in simulting the motion of the lls(mss points) n tking into ount their ollisions with ostles (the nils) for ifferent vlues of the three speifie prmeters of the prolem. On the Glton or, we introue n orthogonl oorinte system Oxy in the following wy: the xis Ox is irete horizontlly n psses through the upper ounries of the retngulr omprtments, in whih the flling lls re to e ollete (for revity, from this point on, we will sy omprtments inste of retngulr omprtments). The xis Oy is irete vertilly n goes through the enter of the nil tht ll is to hit first. The length of the or is tken lrge enough for the lls not to reh its vertil ounries (s ws speifie erlier). Thus, pir x, y represents the position of ll in the plne of the Glton or. The fll of the ll is esrie with set of two orinry ifferentil equtions: ẍ = 0, ÿ = g, (3.1) where g is the grvittionl elertion. Sine the ll flls from the funnel n onto the first nil uner grvity, the veloity of the ll t the point of the first impt is v 0 = 2g(h 0 Rsinα 0 ), where h 0 is the istne etween the funnel s opening n the enter of the first nil, R is the nil s rius, while α 0 is the ngle etween the xis Ox n the rius rwn to the point where the ll hits the nil (Fig. 4). We will investigte the further motion of the ll oring to the following pln: 1. Introue oorinte system fixe to the nil: its origin is t the ll-to-nil impt point, n its xes re the tngent n the norml to the nil s surfe t this point. Thus, with respet
434 REGULAR AND CHAOTIC DYNAMICS, V. 8, í4, 2003 V. V. KOZLOV, M. Yu. MITROFANOVA Fig. 4. to this oorinte system, the veloity of the prtile t the first impt point hs the following omponents: v τ 0 = v 0osα 0, v n 0 = v 0sinα After the impt with the nil, the veloity omponents will hnge n tke the form: v τ 1 = = v 0 osα 0, v n 1 = evn 0 = ev 0sinα 0, where e is the oeffiient of restitution. 3. Then the ll will move in prol. To fin its pth, we solve the equtions (1) with the following initil vlues: x(0) = x 0, y(0) = y 0, ẋ(0) = v 1 osγ 0, ẏ(0) = v 1 sinγ 0, where (x 0, y 0 ) re the oorintes of the ll t the time it hits the nil, v 1 = (v1 τ)2 +(v1 n)2, while γ 0 is the ngle etween the xis Ox n the veloity vetor v 1. Thus, the ll s pth is the following prol: g y = 2v1 2 (x x 0 ) 2 +(x x 0 )tnγ 0 +y 0. (3.2) os2 γ 0 The portion of the prol the ll will tke is etermine y the iretion of the ll s veloity vetor fter its impt with the nil. 4. From (1) we fin the veloity with whih the ll will pproh the next nil. Let (x 1, y 1 ) e the oorintes of the point of the next ll-to-nil impt. Then the veloity of the ll on the surfe of this nil hs the following omponents: v x 2 = v 1osγ 0, v y 2 = g(x 1 x 0 ) v 1 osγ 0 +v 1 sinγ 0. Then nother ollision ours, n gin the ll s motion is lulte oring to the proeure esrie ove. The whole opertion is repete until the ll rosses the xis Ox. As soon s the ll s pth rosses the xis Ox, we fin the intersetion point n thus etermine the omprtment the ll flls into. One of the most importnt things out this moel is to fin the nil tht the ll is going to hit next. To tht en, onsier the perpeniulrs to the ll s pth whih go through the nils enters. Suh perpeniulrs re esrie with liner equtions: ( ) g x x n + v 2 os 2 γ (x n x imp )+tnγ (y y n ) = 0, (3.3)
REGULAR AND CHAOTIC DYNAMICS, V. 8, í4, where (x imp, y imp ) re the oorintes of the previous ll-to-nil impt, (x n, y n ) re the oorintes of the pth s point through whih perpeniulr is rwn, v is the mgnitue of the ll s veloity fter the previous impt, n γ is the ngle etween the xis Ox n the veloity vetor v. Sine our gol is to fin perpeniulrs through the nils enters, we insert the oorintes of the enter of one of the nils (x, y ) into (3). From this eqution, we fin pir (x n, y n ) whih meets the following requirements: the istne etween the nil s enter n the point (x n, y n ) is smller thn the nil s rius; the solute vlue of the ifferene etween the siss of the previous impt point n the siss of the pth s point, through whih the perpeniulr is rwn, is s smll s possile. The first requirement is to ensure tht the ll s pth meets the nil, i.e. the oorintes of the next impt point (x, y) n e foun. These oorintes stisfy the following set of equtions: (x x ) 2 +(y y ) 2 = R 2, g y = 2v 2 os 2 γ (x x imp) 2 +(x x imp )tnγ +y imp, where (x, y ) re the oorintes of the nil s enter, R is the nil s rius, n (x imp, y imp ) re the oorintes of the previous impt point. The seon requirement is to tke the impts in their sequene. This follows from the prmetri form of the ll s pth. We solve the equtions (1) with the following initil vlues: x(0) = x imp, y(0) = y imp, ẋ(0) = vosγ, ẏ(0) = vsinγ, where (x imp, y imp ) re the oorintes of the previous impt point, v is the mgnitue of the ll s veloity fter the previous impt, while γ is the ngle etween the xis Ox n the veloity vetor v. The result is the prmetri form of the ll s pth fter it hs hit the nil: x = vtosγ +x imp, y = g 2 t2 +vtsinγ +y imp. 5. Simultion results. The moel Glton or hs een implemente s n intertive Mirosoft Visul C++ pplition. The pplition offers the opportunity to vry every prmeter of the moel: the nil s rius, the oeffiient of restitution, n the vrine of the initil istriution when the ll hits the first nil; it lso llows vrying the numer of roppe lls. The pplition outputs histogrm of the lls in the omprtments n the vrine of the finl istriution of the lls over the omprtments. Besies, the experiment s results n e visulize. First, we get histogrm of the istriution of the lls over the omprtments (Fig. 5). Form this histogrm, the vrine is lulte using the following well-known formuls: x = n i=1 x i N i N, σ2 = n (x i x) 2 N i N, i=1 where x is the mthemtil expettion, x i is the oorinte of the enter of the ith omprtment, n is the numer of omprtments, N is the numer of roppe lls, N i is the finl numer of lls umulte in the i th omprtment, n σ is the vrine of the istriution. Seon, using the vrine otine, we plot the norml istriution (Gussin) urve using the Guss formul f (x) = 1 σ 2π e (x x)2 /(2σ 2). Next, we ompre the theoretil urve with the moel urve (Fig. 6). The moel urve is plotte with squres, while the theoretil urve is plotte s soli line. The results given in this pper were otine for roppe lls. This numer is optiml from the viewpoint of the result s ury n the proessing time neee for the experiment.
436 REGULAR AND CHAOTIC DYNAMICS, V. 8, í4, 2003 V. V. KOZLOV, M. Yu. MITROFANOVA Fig. 5 Fig. 6 Figures 7 ( ) show the histogrms of the lls istriution over the omprtments for (), (), (), n () of roppe lls. These results were otine with the following vlue of the prmeters: e = 1, R = 0.1, n σ 0 = We n see tht the histogrms shown in Figs. 7 n re, for ll prtil purposes, ientil. The ury of the results n lso e juge y the figures given in Tle 1. These figures re the vlues of the vrine of the finl istriution for 10000, n roppe lls in eight series of simultions. Fig. 7. Tle 1. e = 1, R = 0.1, n σ 0 = 0.04 N Let us first onsier the se where the lls re istriute uniformly on the with of the funnel s opening. Inste of the norml istriution of the lls over the omprtments (s it might
REGULAR AND CHAOTIC DYNAMICS, V. 8, í4, e expete), we get somewht unusul istriution with peripherl peks n two istintive gps ner the enter (Fig. 2). These gps re lote symmetrilly with respet to the vertil xis through the funnel s enter. For this se, the moel Glton or ws tken, otherwise the lls reh its vertil ounries. More preisely, Fig. 2 orrespons to the se of solutely elsti impt (e = 1) n R = 0.1. Fig. 8. For smller vlue of the oeffiient of restitution (e = 0.8) n n inrese vlue of the nil s rius to R = 0.3, the lls istriution over the omprtments hnges not very signifintly: istintive peripherl peks re still present, while inste of two pronoune gps we hve severl symmetrilly lote smll pits (Fig. 8). With further erese of the oeffiient of restitution the epth n struture of these pits hnges. In Figs. 8,, n, the histogrms re shown for e = 0.6, e = 0.4, n e = 0.1, respetively (the nil s rius is the sme, R = 0.3). If the lls re fe into the funnel oring to Gussin lw with lrge ispersion σ 0, then the form of the histogrms will not hnge qulittively. Therefore, the se of smll ispersion σ 0 eomes espeilly interesting. Let σ 0 = 0.05 n R = 0.4. We re going to investigte the form of the histogrm, s the oeffiient of restitution e ereses from 1 to 0. Figures 9 ( ) show the lls istriutions over the omprtments for e = 1 1 (), 0.9 (), 0.8 (), n 0.7 (). We n see tht the istriution in the se of solutely elsti impt is lmost Gussin with two notiele pits. As the oeffiient of restitution ereses, the norml istriution gets orrupte ; inste of the pits, istintive gps pper, whih eome eeper with erese of e. However, this piture hols only for e elow vlue of e 0.7. A further erese of the oeffiient of restitution mkes the gps ispper, n the istriution eomes prtilly inistinguishle from the Gussin istriution (Fig. 9e). Figures 10 ( e) show similr series of histogrms for R = 1, while the oeffiient of restitution tkes suessively the vlues 0.7, 0.6, 0.3, 0.2, n 0.1. We n see tht for e = 0.2 there re two gps, while for lrger n smller vlues of e the istriution is, prtilly, Gussin. A further inrese in e results in istriution whih is very ifferent from Gussin. The mentione osions of evition of the finl istriution of the lls from Gussin istriution re intriguingly ssoite with non-monotoni ehvior of the vrine σ s funtion of two vriles R n e (with σ 0 eing fixe). Tle 2 gives the vlues of σ for σ 0 = We n see tht for fixe R, the vrine σ lol mximum. It is extly tht vlue of the oeffiient of restitution in the viinity of whih sustntil evition from the Gussin istriution ours.
