WOLVERINES The No. 4/3-ranked Ohio State men s hockey team will host Michigan for two games this weekend in Value City Arena in Columbus. The Buckeyes (12-4-4, B1G) and Wolverines (7-8-6, B1G) will face off at 7 p.m. each night. The game Friday will be available through the BTN Plus subscription service with Saturday s matchup on BTN. Dan Kelly and Ben Clymer will be on the BTN call. Ohio State radio will also carry the action both nights on 1460 AM in Columbus, through the Ohio State Buckeyes app and on OhioStateBuckeyes.com. The Wolverines defeated Notre Dame Saturday, 4-2, and lost to Merrimack in a nonconference game Tuesday, 4-2. BUCKEYE NOTES TO KNOW The Buckeyes enter the weekend on a seven-game unbeaten streak, with a mark in the games. The seven goals scored by the Buckeyes Friday were the most this season and the highest goal total since an 8-3 victory at Minnesota Dec. 3, The squad has 18 goals in its last three games combined and is now averaging 3.1 goals per game. 2 JUST THE STATS Through the first 20 games this year, Ohio State is averaging 3.1 goals a game and allowing 2.20 per contest. The power play is 19-for-91 (.209) and the penalty kill is 61- for-77 (.792). The squad is averaging 8.9 penalty minutes a game, along with 37.0 shots on goal a night, allowing 28.3 shots a contest. Nationally, the Buckeyes are 19th in scoring offense, 11th in scoring defense and 16th on the power play, as well as third in shots on goal per game. Senior Mason Jobst leads the Buckeyes with 13 goals and 23 points, while junior Tanner Laczynski is second with 18 points. Laczynski and freshman Gustaf Westlund share the team assist lead with 12 each. Junior Ronnie Hein is second with seven goals, followed by Laczynski, senior Dakota Joshua and junior Carson Meyer with six each. Jobst and Joshua are tied for third with 10 assists apiece. In goal, Sean Romeo and Tommy Nappier split starts the first 10 series, with Romeo starting Friday and Nappier Saturday. IN THE RANKINGS The Buckeyes have been ranked in the Top 10 in both the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls throughout the season. The team has been at No. 7 or higher in the USCHO poll and in the Top 9 of the USA Today poll throughout the year. This week, USCHO released a poll for the first time since Dec. 10, with Ohio State moving from No. 7 to No. 4. In this week s USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine rankings, the Buckeyes moved up one from No. 4 last week to No. 3. Three of the Buckeyes five nonconference foes are ranked in the most recent USCHO rankings - UMass is No. 2, Bowling Green is No. 10 and Arizona State is No. 13. No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 11 Penn State are the other Big Ten teams in the Top 20, with Michigan and Wisconsin receiving votes. In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll this week, the Minutemen are No. 2, the Falcons are No. 12 and the Sun Devils are No. 13. Notre Dame is ranked ninth and Penn State is 10th. The Buckeye squad started the year No. 2 in the USA Today poll and No. 3 in the USCHO rankings. The team then moved into the top spot the next two weeks in both polls (Oct. 8, Oct. 15). Tanner Laczynski has 97 points in the Scarlet and Gray through his first 92 games. He is looking to become the third Buckeye with 100 points as a junior since 2003 (Ryan Dzingel/2014, Mason Jobst/2018). Laczynski has 33 goals and 64 assists as a Buckeye. Dakota Joshua has 94 points through 116 games as a Buckeye, with 38 goals and 56 assists. All-time, 59 Buckeyes have hit triple digits. Mason Jobst has a line as a Buckeye, ranking 19th in program history in career points and five back of tying three skaters for 16th. His 151 points are the most since Paul Rutherford had 156 from Jobst leads current NCAA skaters in points (18 ahead of second place). Since the season, Jobst is the 20th player in the NCAA to post 150 or more points. Team USA won the silver medal, falling to Finland in the Gold Medal Game, 3-2. The team had a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals and topped Russia in the semifinals, 2-1. This marks the third consecutive tournament Miller served on the United States staff at the World Junior Championship. He was part of the 2017 gold-medal winning squad (that included Buckeye Tanner Laczynski) and coached on the 2018 team that won a bronze medal. SCORING DEFENSE On the year, Ohio State is 11th nationally in goals allowed per game, holding opponents to 2.20 goals per contest. In 15 of 20 games the Buckeyes have given up two or fewer goals. It is the best career plus/ minus for a Buckeye blueliner since at least 2000, ahead of the +41 posted by Matt Waddell from Larocque has two of five goals scored by Buckeye blueliners this year, scoring vs. Penn State (shorthanded) 2

Freshman Ryan O Connell picked up his first carer goal and point as a Buckeye last Friday at Michigan State. Miller and Larocque share the team point lead among defensemen with seven each. Miller, who scored the 3x3 overtime goal for the Buckeyes at Minnesota Nov. 30, has a line and Larocque has two goals and five helpers. Senior blueliner Tommy Parran is tied for second on the team with a +7 rating. Myer leads the Buckeyes with 31 blocked shots on the year. He has four in four games this year. Miller and Larocque are tied for second with 27 each. Larocque scored shorthanded vs. Penn State Nov. 24, the seventh Buckeye defenseman to score a shorthanded goal since 2000, with eight shortys from the blueline in that span. Josh Healey tallied in 2017, the first SHG by a blueliner since Shane Sims in 2010 (and 2009). Other Buckeye defensemen with shorthanded goals include Matt Waddell (2007), Jason DeSantis (2005), Doug Andress (2004) and Scott Titus (2002). The last Buckeye with more than one shorthanded goal in a season was Andre Signoretti who scored two in BETWEEN THE PIPES Goalies Sean Romeo and Tommy Nappier, who split starts through the first 10 series, have combined for six shutouts. Nappier blanked Arizona State Oct. 12, Colgate Nov. 10 and Michigan State Jan. 5, with Romeo not allowing a goal in three straight starts - at Notre Dame Nov. 2, at Colgate Nov. 9 and vs. Wisconsin Nov. 16. Romeo, a redshirt senior, now has five career shutouts (tying for fifth in program history), while sophomore Nappier has four in his career. Nappier is second in the NCAA with a.947 save percentage and 1.54 goals-against average. Romeo posted three shutouts in a row, the first Buckeye goalie in program history to accomplish the feat. The goal allowed in the second period vs. Penn State Nov. 23 ended his shutout streak at a school record 204:27 (the 28thlongest individual streak in NCAA history). Nappier had back-to-back shutouts, with a shutout vs. Wisconsin in his last game last season and the shutout of the Sun Devils in his first start of. The goal Nappier allowed in the first period vs. UMass Nov. 10 ended his individual shutout streak at 195:32, now the third-longest streak in program history. Romeo broke the record of 197:06 set by Christian Frey Dec. 18, 2015-Jan. 9, Buckeye goalies have earned four Big Ten Star of the Week honors this year. Romeo was honored Nov. 6 and Nov. 20, while Nappier was recognized Nov. 13 and Jan. 8. LAST TIME OUT - OHIO STATE AT MICHIGAN STATE The Buckeyes returned to Big Ten play with a series at Michigan State last weekend. Friday, the teams tied 7-7 and the Spartans earned the extra B1G point with a 3 3 overtime goal. Saturday the Buckeyes rebounded with a 6-0 victory. Game One Ohio State opened the scoring 1:16 into the game on Gustaf Westlund s first career goal but the Spartans scored at 3:49 and 14:21 to take a 2-1 lead. Just 35 seconds later Ohio State tied the game on a goal by Tanner Laczynski and at 16:43 freshman Quinn Preston put Ohio State ahead 3-2. The Buckeyes scored the only goal of the second period, with Mason Jobst tallying, for a 4-2 Buckeye lead through 40 minutes. In the third, MSU drew within one with a power play goal but the Buckeyes answered on a second Westlund score at 2:20. At 7:24 freshman defenseman Ryan O Connell scored his first goal for a 6-3 Ohio State advantage. The teams traded goals in 1:05, with MSU scoring at 13:55 and Dakota Joshua tallying for the Buckeyes at 15:00. The Spartans answered right back, with a goal at 15:25. They then scored a power play goal for a one-goal game at 16:31 and tied the game with an extra attacker goal at 19:13. Neither team was able to score in the five minute 5 5 overtime. Ohio State outshot the Spartans, 39-36, in the game. The Buckeyes were 1-for- 3 with the man advantage (putting nine shots on net) and MSU was 2-for-3. Game Two Neither team scored in the first period. Ohio State had three goals in both the second and third tallies, and Tommy Nappier stopped all 29 shots, for the win. Ronnie Hein opened the scoring at 4:40 of the second, Quinn Preston tallied at 8:14 and Mason Jobst scored at 13:26. In the third, John Wiitala tallied on a major power play, Dakota Joshua converted a 5 3 (during the major) and Brendon Kearney closed the scoring. Shots were in favor of Ohio State in the game. The Buckeyes were 3-for-5 with the man advantage and faced one power play. JOBST AND NAPPIER RECOGNIZED Senior forward Mason Jobst and sophomore goalie Tommy Nappier were honored for their performances in the series at Michigan State last weekend. Jobst was tabbed First Star of the Week by both the NCAA and the Big Ten, while Nappier was named Big Ten Third Star of the Week. This is the sixth career weekly conference award for Jobst. He led the NCAA in scoring last week with seven points, on two goals and five assists. His second point Saturday was his 150th as a Buckeye, making him the first Ohio State skater with 150+ points since 1991 and the 20th NCAA D1 men s player with 150+ points since the start of the campaign. Friday, he had a goal and three assists for four points, along with a +3 rating. Saturday he notched a goal and two assists for three points, with a +2 rating. Nappier is now a three-time conference weekly award winner, with honors Feb. 27, 2018 and Nov. 13, Nappier stopped all 29 shots he faced at Michigan State Saturday. He had nine saves in the first period, eight in the second and 12 in the third to preserve the shutout. BUCKEYES VS. WOLVERINES Ohio State and Michigan met for the first time in 1964 and after games in , and , have met at least once each season since when Michigan joined Ohio State in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Wolverines lead the all-time series, , including in Columbus. In the last 10 games, the Buckeyes have the advantage, 8-2. Ohio State and Michigan met five times a season ago, with the Buckeyes winning all five games. In the regular season, Ohio State won 3-2 and 5-1 in Ann Arbor Nov and notched 4-0 and 5-3 victories Jan in Columbus. In the Big Ten Tournament semifinals in Nationwide Arena March 10, the Buckeyes prevailed in overtime, THE LAST GAME Ohio State defeated Michigan in overtime March 10, 2018 in Nationwide Arena in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. Ohio State led 1-0 after the first period on a power play goal by defenseman Gordi Myer, his first tally of the season. The Wolverines notched the only goal of the second for a 1-1 game after 40 minutes. In the third, Ohio State went ahead on a Dakota Joshua power play goal at 4:01, but the Wolverines Cooper Marody scored his second goal of the night, converting on the power play, to tie the game at 7:37. Just 32 seconds into overtime, Wyatt Ege brought the puck up through the neutral zone and passed to Tanner Laczynski on the right wing. He found Matthew Weis in the slot and he scored for the Buckeye victory. Ohio State outshot the Wolverines, 35-31, in the game. The Buckeyes were 2-for-4 on the power play, with Michigan 1-for-2. BUCKEYES AND MICHIGAN Six Buckeyes call Michigan home, behind only the seven Ohio natives on this year s roster. Grant Gabriel is from Brighton, Ronnie Hein hails from Chelsea, Dakota Joshua is a Dearborn native, Brendon Kearney is a native of Northville, Quinn Preston calls Trenton home and Michael Rounds is from Mt. Pleasant. THE WOLVERINES Michigan is overall this season, with a mark in Big Ten play. The team s six ties have all come in the last 10 games, with the Wolverines in the stretch. The Wolverines are scoring 3.0 goals per game and allowing 3.14 a contest. The power play is 18-for-99 (.182) and the penalty kill is 60-for-76 (.789). Michigan is second in the nation with 37.8 shots on goal a night, allowing 27.7 a contest. Defenseman Quinn Hughes leads Michigan with 17 assists and 20 points and Josh Norris shares the goal lead with Nick Pastujov with 10 each and ranks second with 19 points. In all, seven Wolverines have 10+ points. In goal, Strauss Mann is 4-4-3, with a 3.05 goals-against average and.890 save percentage. Mason Jobst is tied for seventh nationally with seven power play goals this season. He has 27 PPG in his career, one back of tying for eighth in program history. 4 on the squad with two power play goals each. THE RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS Senior Mason Jobst and junior Tanner Laczynski are two of 15 returning All-Americans to college hockey this season. They both were unanimous choices for the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list. Jobst, an All-American in 2017, leads all current NCAA players with 151 career points (65g, 86a), the first Buckeye with 150+ points since 1991 (Paul Rutherford/156). Jobst is tied for first among current NCAA skaters in career assists and tied for first in career goals. Jobst became the all-time leader in points in Big Ten games in November. He passed Minnesota s Justin Kloos, who had 86 from Jobst has 95 points in B1G games and owns the career mark with 44 goals in B1G play. Jobst leads the Buckeyes with 13 goals, tying for third nationally and first in the B1G. He had a goal in nine of the Buckeyes 10 Big Ten games this year and has a goal in 13 of 20 games overall, leading the country with the most games with at least one goal. The seven points (2g, 5a) for Jobst last weekend were his most in a two-game series. Friday was his fourth career four-point night and first since Feb. 4, 2017 at Michigan (also the last four-point game for a Buckeye overall). He had two points in game one vs. the Wolverines that weekend for a six-point series. Jobst also had six points in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal series vs. Michigan State last year with two three-point nights (3g, 3a). Laczynski, an All-American in 2018, has 97 points (33g, 65a) through 92 games as a Buckeye, tying for 19th among active NCAA players. He is looking to become the third Buckeye since 2003 to post 100 points as a junior (Ryan Dzingel/2014, Jobst/2018) Laczynski, who missed three games with injury early in the season, has a line in 18 games played this year, with a point in 14 of his outings, including five two-point nights. NOTING NEW BUCKEYES Junior transfer Carson Meyer has 14 points this year after an assist in each game at Michigan State last weekend. He has two two-goal games as a Buckeye and has skated in all 20 games. Rookie Gustaf Westlund shares the Buckeye lead with 12 assists and has a point in seven of the last 10 games. Friday at Michigan State he scored twice, marking his first goals as a Buckeye. He is tied for third in points among B1G freshmen. Freshman Quinn Preston scored his first goal as a Buckeye vs. Wisconsin Nov. 17 and added his first assist vs. Penn State Nov. 23. He scored the 3x3 OT winner at Minnesota Dec. 1. Preston had four points at Michigan State last week, including a goal and two assists Friday for his first career multiple-point game. Freshman defenseman Ryan O Connell has played in all 20 games this year, with a +4 rating and 14 blocked shots. He notched his first career goal last Friday at MSU. BUCKEYE THIS AND THAT Ronnie Hein has the gamewinning goal in all three shutout wins this year. He is second on the team with seven goals, marking a career high. He has six assists on the year for a personal-best 13 points. The Buckeyes are third in the NCAA in shots per game, behind only Big Ten teams Penn State (39.9) and Michigan (37.8). Ohio State is averaging 37.0 shots on goal per game this year, with 39 or more in each of the last five games. The 14-goal game Friday had the most goals for a Buckeye contest since an 8-6 loss at Michigan Jan. 17, Senior Freddy Gerard skated in career game 100 vs. Mercyhurst Dec. 29, becoming one of seven current Buckeyes with 100 or more games played (Mason Jobst/134, John Wiitala/132, Sasha Larocque/127, Brendon Kearney/121, Dakota Joshua/116, Tommy Parran/105, Gerard/102). Jobst is second among Big Ten skaters (behind Penn State s Chase Berger/135) and in the Top 15 nationally with 134 career games played, with Wiitala tied for third among league skaters. The Buckeyes are fourth nationally in points from seniors, with 33 goals, 40 assists and 73 points. Princeton is first with 75, followed by Mercyhurst and Union with 74 each. The Buckeyes have eight seniors, tying for the third-largest senior class nationally. Ohio State has 16 juniors/seniors combined, matching the largest group of upperclassmen in the NCAA this year. The Buckeyes 4-0 win over Wisconsin Nov. 16 was the 100th career victory for Buckeye head coach Steve Rohlik. He is third all-time in wins at Ohio State and the third Buckeye at the helm to hit triple-digit victories. He is in his sixth year at the helm. Jerry Welsh is the program s leader in coaching wins with 328 ( ), followed by John Markell with 280 ( ) and Rohlik in third. #PROBUCKS Four Buckeyes - Tanner Fritz (NYI), Max McCormick (OTT), Ryan Dzingel (OTT) and Ryan Kesler (ANA) - started the year with NHL teams. Other Buckeyes who began the year at NHL camps included Matt Bartkowski (MINN), Zac Dalpe (CBJ), Anthony Greco (FLA), David Gust (EDM), Josh Healey (CAL), Sam Jardine (TOR), Matt Tomkins (CHI) and Matthew Weis (VGK). Dalpe, who has skated for NHL Columbus this year, was selected for the Canadian National Men s Team that finished second at the 2018 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland this winter. Buckeyes currently in the AHL include Bartkowski, Dalpe, Fritz, Greco, Gust, Healey, Jardine, McCormick, Nick Schilkey (CAR) and Weis. Greco made his NHL debut with Florida in December and Bartkowski skated in his first game with the Wild in late December. Five of the six seniors from the 2018 squad moved on to professional hockey, with the sixth, Christian Lampasso, earning his engineering degree at Autumn Commencement. Of the other 2018 seniors, Janik Moser signed with Adler Mannheim in the DEL and Weis (who also attended Vegas Knights development camp) is with the AHL Chicago Wolves. Matt Joyaux (Grand Rapids), Kevin Miller (Fort Wayne, now with Greenville) and Luke Stork (South Carolina, traded to Maine before the season) all signed with ECHL teams. Five Buckeyes on the squad have been drafted - Miguel Fidler (FLA), Dakota Joshua (TOR), Tanner Laczynski (PHI), Carson Meyer (CBJ) and Ryan O Connell (TOR). Alaska Anchorage (WCHA)/Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) Major: Consumer and Family Financial Services Steve Rohlik, in his first five years as the head coach of the Ohio State men s hockey team, has led the program back into the national picture. The Buckeyes have back-toback NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Frozen Four berth in 2018 (the first for the program in 20 years). Rohlik, the 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year runner-up, was named the ninth head coach in program history in April 2013 after spending three years as the Buckeyes associate head coach. He has more than 20 years experience as a Division I coach and during his career has recruited and/or coached two Hobey Baker Award winners, 16 All-Americans including Buckeyes Brady Hjelle, Ryan Dzingel, Mason Jobst and Tanner Laczynski and nearly 20 players who have reached the NHL. He had a career and Ohio State record of through Under Rohlik, the Buckeyes have been outstanding academically, combining as a team to post a grade-point average of 3.0+ throughout his tenure. He has had 36 players combine for 66 Academic All-Big Ten accolades and 43 accumulate 90 Ohio State Scholar-Athlete nods. In , 20 of the Buckeyes were invited to the Ohio State Scholar-Athlete Dinner, 15 earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades and Sean Romeo was recognized with the NCAA Elite 90 Award at the Frozen Four. On the ice, the team has posted back-to-back 20+ win seasons, led the NCAA on the power play in and was first on the penalty kill in The team has ranked in the Top 10 in scoring offense and in the Top 12 on the power play each of the last three years. The Buckeyes allowed just 2.07 goals a game in , the best mark in program history and the third-best scoring defense in the NCAA for the year. Rohlik joined the Ohio State program in 2010 after 10 seasons on the coaching staff at Minnesota Duluth ( ) where the squad advanced to two NCAA Tournaments, including a Frozen Four appearance in 2004, and won the 2009 WCHA playoff title. He was part of the staff that put together the roster of the Bulldogs 2010 NCAA Championship squad. Rohlik coached three seasons at Nebraska-Omaha, joining the program for its inaugural campaign in In the team s first campaign as a member of the CCHA (its third year as a Division I team), the squad advanced to the 2000 CCHA Championship final. Rohlik spent five years as the head coach at Hill-Murray High School, his alma mater, in Saint Paul, Minn., posting a ledger and leading the squad to two Minnesota State High School Tournaments, including a runner-up finish in the 1993 Tier I event and fourth place in 1997 Class AA before joining the UNO Mavericks.
