Team USA was undefeated in the tournament, with shootout wins over Russia in the semifinals and over Canada in the final. Laczynski scored a goal vs. Slovakia and had an assist vs. Russia in pool play. The team's fourth line center, he did not see action in the semifinals because of illness. Five Buckeyes have skated for Team USA at the WJC since 2001 RJ Umberger and David Steckel both played in 2001 and 02, Ryan Kesler also was a two-time participant (2003, 04), Tom Fritsche skated in 2006 and Joseph Palmer was on the team in THE SCORING LEADERS Junior Matthew Weis has 22 points this season on seven goals and 15 assists, marking the third 20-point campaign of his Buckeye career. He had two assists in game two at Michigan, his third multiple-assist game of the year. He has seven goals and 13 assists this season, with a point in each of his last four games (2g, 2a, 4p). Sophomore Dakota Joshua has a line, his first 20-point season as a Buckeye. He had a goal in each game at Michigan and has scored in each of the last three outings. Freshman defenseman Gordi Myer had three points at Michigan, including two Saturday for his first multiple-point night as a Buckeye. He has seven assists on the year. Senior Josh Healey leads the Buckeye blueliners with 18 points this season, ranking fourth in the Big Ten in defenseman scoring. Sophomore John Wiitala has nine goals, eight assists and 17 points on the year, including a power play goal at Michigan Saturday. He had two goals at Robert Morris Nov. 5 for his first career multiple-goal game. EXTRA TIME The Buckeyes are tied for second in the NCAA with six ties this season. The loss to Wisconsin Saturday was the team's first in overtime this year after the first six overtime contests remained deadlocked through the five minute period. Last season, the Buckeyes had a school record 11 overtime games, with a ledger in games that needed extra time. BUCKEYES AND THE NHL Three Buckeyes were on NHL opening night rosters - Zac Dalpe (Minnesota), Ryan Dzingel (Ottawa) and Ryan Kesler (Anaheim). Dzingel and Kesler are both regulars for their teams, with Dalpe currently in the AHL after time on injured reserve. Kesler was selected for the NHL All-Star Game for the second time in his career this season. Another seven Buckeyes were on NHL training camp rosters when camps opened: Max McCormick (Ottawa), Matt Bartkowski (Ottawa), Nate Guenin (Anaheim), Tyson Strachan (Buffalo), Tanner Fritz (New York Islanders), Anthony Greco (Florida), Cal Heeter (Detroit) and Rod Pelley (New Jersey) were also in training camps. They all are currently on AHL rosters. McCormick has been called up twice this year. Freshmen Sam McCormick and Matt Miller both have brothers in professional hockey. McCormick s brother, Max, played for the Buckeyes from and made his NHL debut with Ottawa last season. Miller s brother, J.T., is in his third season with the New York Rangers. Sophomore Miguel Fidler's father Michael played 271 total NHL games for the Cleveland Barons, Minnesota North Stars, Hartford Whalers and Chicago Blackhawks combined. John Wiitala's father was drafted by the North Stars. The drafted Buckeyes on the squad are Tanner Laczynski (Philadelphia, 2016, 6th round), Fidler (Florida, 2014, 5th round), Dakota Joshua (Toronto, 2014, 5th round) and Matt Tomkins (Chicago, 2012, 7th round). FUTURE BUCKEYES A trio of USHL players signed National Letters of Intent with Ohio State last month. The group includes goalie Tommy Nappier (St. Louis, Mo./Chicago Steel, just traded to Omaha Lancers), forward Austin Pooley (Dublin, Ohio/Youngstown Phantoms) and defenseman Michael Rounds (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Des Moines Buccaneers). Joining the trio on the active roster will be defenseman Wyatt Ege and goalie Sean Romeo, who are both with the team this season but must sit out to satisfy NCAA transfer rules. Ege will have three years of eligibility, while Romeo will have two. BEHIND THE BENCH Steve Rohlik is in his fourth year as the Buckeyes head coach and in his seventh year on the Ohio State staff. Mark Strobel is in his second campaign as the associate head coach and Joe Exter is in his sixth year as an assistant coach with the program. BREAK IT DOWN All but three Buckeye letterwinners returned from last year s team. The Buckeyes roster for this season includes 26 eligible players, with seven seniors, six juniors, eight sophomores and five freshmen (tied for the smallest rookie class in the NCAA this season). The group includes three goalies, eight defensemen and 15 forwards. (Transfers Wyatt Ege, a sophomore defenseman, and Sean Romeo, a junior goalie, cannot play this season because of NCAA transfer rules and will be eligible for ) The players hail from three countries (United States, Canada and Germany), from 11 states and one Canadian province. Five Buckeyes are Ohio natives, with four each from Minnesota, Michigan and Alberta. Three call Illinois home, with one each from Indiana, New Jersey, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin. OHIO STATE SECOND IN B1G PRESEASON POLL, THREE BUCKEYES ON B1G WATCH LIST In the Big Ten preseason coaches poll, the Buckeyes were picked second, behind only defending champion Minnesota. Michigan was third, followed by Penn State, Wisconsin and Michigan State. Ohio State was also second in the league with three Buckeyes on the 13-player Preseason Players to Watch list. Defenseman Josh Healey, a First Team All-B1G selection last year, forward Nick Schilkey, who was Second Team All-B1G in 2016, and forward Mason Jobst, a member of the 2016 B1G All-Freshman Team, were all selected by the league s coaches.
