1 Prc. Indian Acad. Sci. (Earth Planet. Sci.), Vl. 14, N. 2, June 1995, pp Printed in India. MONTBLEX data archival centre K G VERNEKAR and S S ARAL1KATTI Indian Institute f Trpical Meterlgy, Pune 411 8, India Abstract. A c-rdinated prject Mnsn Trugh Bundary Layer Experiment (MON- TBLEX) t study the atmspheric bundary layer in the mnsn trugh regin was taken up during m high instrumented twers were erected at Kharagpur, Banaras, Delhi and Jdhpur. Sphisticated equipment like Dppler sdar and Kytn were used at Kharagpur. Sdars were expsed at Calcutta, Delhi and Jdhpur. ORV Sagarkanya cruises were arranged in the Bay f Bengal. The India Meterlgical Department set up new surface and radiatin bservatries and released special radi-snde, pilt ballns. Using the abve mentined platfrms, data were cllected during April- September 199 and after prper editing the entire data were archived at the Indian Institute f Trpical Meterlgy, Pune. The DST-MONTBLEX data bank was started at IITM n 25th Nvember The paper cntains the details f this data. Keywrds. Data centre; MONTBLEX data; bundary layer data. 1. Intrductin The main aim f the c-rdinated prject n Mnsn Trugh Bundary Layer Experiment was t study the land-lcked mnsn trugh dynamics. The cre measurements included the evaluatin f surface fluxes at Kharagpur, Varanasi, New Delhi and Jdhpur using twer-based data. The large scale atmspheric parameters in the mnsn trugh regin were mnitred by the India Meterlgical Department and Indian Air Frce. The ship bservatins near the head f the Bay f Bengal, a ptential site fr develpment f mnsn depressins, were arranged by the Natinal Institute f Oceangraphy. Details f the bservatinal prgramme can be seen in figure Special bservatins 2.1 Dppler sdar mnstatic sdar bservatins A Dppler sdar was perated by the Indian Institute f Trpical Meterlgy, Pune at Kharagpur during April 28th - Sept. 15th, 199. Hurs ~ per day Number f days Mnstatic sdars, ne each at Calcutta, Banaras, Delhi, Jdhpur, were perated during the MONTBLEX perid. 2.2 K ytn bservatins A 2"3 m 3 Kytn was perated by the Indian Institute f Trpical Meterlgy, Pune n 28 ccasins. Thugh the Kytn has the capability t reach 15 m, the maximum height reached during the curse f experimental phase was nly 84 m. This cnstraint was due t high winds prevailing at Kharagpur. 2.3 Minisnde bservatins Slw-rising minisndes were released by the Indian Institute f Trpical Meterlgy t recrd temperature fluctuatins in the bundary layer. During IOP abut 7-8 minisndes were released per day. A ttal f 45 minisndes were released. 2.4 Marine bundary layer bservatins The Natinal Institute f Oceangraphy, perated its research vessel Sagarkanya during the mnths f Aug. - Sept. 199 ver Bay f Bengal. The ship was statined at a fixed pint 2~176 fr ver fifteen days and rutine marine bservatins were cllected alng with micrmeterlgical bservatins arranged by IITM, Pune. The rutes f Sagarkanya are shwn in figure Data archival prgramme After successful cmpletin f the Mnsn Trugh Bundary Layer Experiment, it was decided that the vast data cllected during the main campaign shuld be archived at ne place, and accrdingly the Department f Science and Technlgy sanctined the prpsal n archival f MONTBLEX data at the Indian Institute f Trpical Meterlgy, Pune. All the prject leaders wh actively participated in the experiment were required t transfer their data t the data bank. The data bank became fully peratinal during February Data disseminatin The data frm instrumented twers are stred n cartridge tapes. Mst f the remaining data are stred n flppies (1.2 MB, DSHD). A small amunt f data is held in
