(Dte: July 8, 8 Single spins in the soli-stte offer unique opportunity to store n mnipulte quntum informtion, n to perform quntum-enhne sensing of lol fiels n hrges. Optil ontrol of these systems using tehniques evelope in tomi physis hs yet to exploit ll the vntges of the soli-stte. We emonstrte voltge tunility of the spin energy levels in single quntum ot y moifying how spins sense mgneti fiel. We fin the in-plne g-ftor vries isontinuously for eletrons, s more holes re loe onto the ot. In ontrst, the in-plne hole g-ftor vries ontinuously. The evie n hnge the sign of the in-plne g-ftor of single hole, t whih point n voie rossing is oserve in the two spin eigensttes. This is extly wht is require for universl ontrol of single spin with single eletril gte. PACS numers: The spin of hrges in quntum ots (QDs hs long een onsiere suitle quit for quntum opertions []. The three imensionl onfinement offere y single semionutor QD reues mny eoherene mehnisms, llowing impressively long oherene times to e oserve in oherent popultion trpping [] or using spin-eho tehniques [3, 4]. In the ltter, ontrol of the spins ws hieve with resonnt, ultrfst optil pulses. An lterntive mehnism for ontrolling single spins is for n eletri fiel to vry their oupling to fixe mgneti fiel (B, esrie y the g-tensor (g [5]. This metho llows multiple losely spe spin quits to e iniviully resse vi nno-eletroes, without resonnt lsers or lolise mgneti fiels. Critil to this oneptistheilitytohngethesignofoneomponent of the g-tensor [5, 6]. Then through reful lignment of the mgneti fiel iretion it is possile to swith etween two eletri fiels where the preession iretions of the spin (given y g.b re orthogonl on the Bloh sphere. In suh system universl ontrol n mp ny point on the Bloh sphere onto ny other point. Although experimentl stuies hve een me of the g-tensor in QDs [7 ], the hnge of sign of one omponent with eletril fiel hs yet to reporte. Erly work use semionutor quntum wells to eletronilly tune the g-tensor of multiple spins y shifting their rrier wvefuntions into res of ifferent mteril omposition [3]. Extening this work to single hrges trppe in zero-imensionl strutures hs not een strightforwr s the rriers tunnel out of the Eletroni ress: nthony.ennett@rl.toshi.o.uk; Corresponing uthor struture when eletri fiel is pplie. One pproh ws emonstrte using eletronilly ouple pirs of QDs[4]. Crriers isplye the g-tensor of the mteril in whih they were lote, so when voltge ws pplie to lolise the hrge in one ot the g-ftor mesure ws tht of the inium-rih QD. However, when the wvefuntion ws elolise etween the ots there ws muh greter sptil overlp with AlAs semionutor in the rrier, n hnge in g ws oserve. Reently, experiments showe tht vertil eletri fiels n hnge the g-ftor relevnt for out-of-plne mgneti fiels (g [9] in ots tht re engineere to hve inrese height n reue inium-omposition. The in-plne g-ftor of n s-shell hole (g h,s ws lso moifie y vertil eletri fiel [] over moest fiel rnge of kv/m. However, oth of these mesurements were me in the photo-urrent regime, where rriers rpily tunnel from the ot gretly limiting the spin lifetime. Conversely, n in-plne eletri fiel n hnge the g-tensor ut there the tunneling prolem is even more severe [, ]. We solve these prolems y loting single ots in the enter of p i n ioe where rriers tht hiner tunneling llow us to pply eletri fiels, F, up to - 5 kv/m, whilst still oserving photoluminesene[5]. We stuy hnges in the g-tensor s funtion of eletri fiel n show high egree of ontrol n e hieve for oth eletrons n holes. We oserve tht ontinuous vrition in the g-ftor of holes in prllel mgneti fiel n e otine. Different ehvior is oserve epening on whether the hole is in the s- or p-shell. When g h,s hs low vlue t zero eletri fiel these evies re ple of tuning it through n voie rossing t finite fiel, n hnging its sign, without rriers esping.

However, when the mgneti fiel is ligne in the plne of the smple (Voigt geometry, B strikingly ifferent ehvior is oserve. Similr rguments n e me to etermine g e,s(x n g h,s (X from the X trnsitions. There is not enough informtion in this mesurement lone to etermine the sign of these g-ftors. However, for nerly ll ots we see n inrese in the fine-struture splitting of the neutrl exiton stte with mgneti fiel, whih is signture tht oth hve the sme sign [6], whih we tke to e negtive [4, 7]. g e,s ppers to e onstnt for given exiton omplex, ut on swithing etween the X n X trnsitions n rupt step is lwys oserve. The reson for this is tht g e,s(x is etermine y the initil stte (when there re two holes lso present in the ot. These holes re etter onfine thn the eletron n provie oulom ttrtion tht reues the extent of the eletron wvefuntion, pushing g e,s loser to [8]. However, g e,s when no holes re present is etermine from the finl stte of the X trnsition. For the smple of 5 ots stuie g e,s(x =.66 ±. n g e,s(x =.78 ±.33, where the numers quote re the men ± the stnr evition. In ontrst to the ehvior of the eletron, g h,s vries linerly with eletri fiel for oth X n X in Fig. e. We estimte the isontinuity in g h,s on swithing etween X n X is on vergen orerofmgnitue smller thn the similr effet for, s expete given the greter sptil extent of the eletron wvefuntion. There is remrkle homogeneity in the rte t whih g h,s n e tune with eletri fiel for ifferent ots, ξ = g h,s /F = (5.7 ±.5 4 m/kv where g h,s t zero eletri fiel is.469±.. The stter in the vlue of g h,s t F = is greter thn the omprle vlue for the eletron, s this is ffete more strongly y vritions in ot height n lterl size [8]. The rte ξ ompres well with the reent pulition of Goen et l [] whih etermines g h,s from the energysplitting of the X in time-resolve photo-urrent mesurement. This pper reports liner vrition in g h,s t rte of m/kv over rnge of only kv/m. The
3 3 rte of shift is lso of the sme orer of mgnitue s tht preite theoretilly, for ots of greter height n uniform omposition[6]. It will e interesting to see whether further theoretil work n fully explin the vritions in the g-tensor we oserve. Minimising the g-ftor of the s-shell hole. With the rnge of fiels essile in these smples, ny ot with g h,s.85 t F = n e tune to minimum g h,s t some fiel, F. We now isuss t from ot with g h,s =.74 t F =. This sme QD lso isplys minimum in the fine-struture splitting of the neutrl exiton of.8 µev t -57. kv/m. We fin tht g h,s /F = m/kv, n thus we re le to tune the hole eigenstte splitting = g h,s µ BB towrs minimum vlue t n eletri fiel of F = -5. kv/m. For fiels ove F (suh s shown in Fig. we oservetht the signofg h,s is the smes forll other ots in the ensemle. For eletri fiels elow F (suh s in Fig. e g h,s hs the opposite sign, whih mnifests itself s ler ifferene in the orienttion ngle t whih the lrgest ifferene in trnsition energies is oserve. Fig. f plots the X trnsition energies s funtion of eletri fiel, F, to lerly show the form of the nti-rossing in the hole sttes (the men vlue of ll four trnsition energies hs een sutrte for lrity, to remove the Strk shift. The minimum hole stte splitting orrespons to g h,s (F =.4, ut we stress tht on either sie of this minimum vlue the g h,s hs ifferent sign. The ehvior of is reminisent of the nti-rossing in neutrl exiton sttes tht hs een oserve with eletri fiel [5, 9, ], however in this se the sttes tht re ouple together ontin only single hole. Inee, in the nlysis of Plumhof et l [], who stuie the nti-rossing of the neutrl exiton sttes uner externlly pplie strin, it ws the hole wvefuntion tht ominte the orienttion of the eigensttes reltive to the lortory (θ n nti-rossing of the eigenenergies. As with the neutrl exiton we fit the voie rossing with oupling prmeter g h,s (F µ B B, where the splitting etween the hole sttes vries linerly wy from F t rte ξµ B B. = g h,s (Fµ BB = µ B B ξ (F F (g h,s (F ( In Fig. g n h we show t summrisingthe ehvior of the two hole eigensttes t 4T (the lowest fiel t whih we n spetrlly resolve ll four trnsitions n 5T (the highest fiel ville with our mgnet fitte with this moel. We oserve tht the mgnitue of the nti-rossing in energy ppers to sle linerly with B, thus g h,s (F is onstnt, t lest in the rnge of fiels we n proe. The resulting vrition of θ with F is the sme for oth mgneti fiels (Fig. h, in orne with equtions n. It will e interesting to further proe the ehvior of this effet in higher mgneti fiels. g-ftor of the p-shell hole. Finlly, we stuy the ey of the positively hnge iexiton,, whih onsists of fille s-shell n exess p-shell hole. These trnsitions re oserve on the low energy sie of the X trnsition [, 3]. We etermine the g-ftors of the p-shell hole whih, to our knowlege, hs not een possile efore (lthough the Voigt geometry eletron p- shell g-ftor hs een proe [4]. We fin tht in the Fry geometry there is no vrition in the p-shell hole g-ftorsfuntionofeletrifiel. InVoigtgeometry the rightest ritive eys from involve reomintion of n s-shell eletron n hole. The resulting photons re linerly polrise s shown in Fig. 3 (lue n re rrows hve orthogonl liner polristion with the initil stte split y g h,p µ BB, where g h,p is the Voigt p-shell hole g-ftor. However, the finl sttes n either hve spin S = / or 5/: their splittings re prtly etermine y the eletron-hole exhnge etween the s-shell eletron n p-shell hole whih hs not een well stuie. Empirilly, we see tht the spin splitting of the S = / finl stte is elow the system resolution t B =, ut inreses with mgneti fiel. In ontrst, the S = 5/ finl stte hs spin splitting of severl hunre µev t B = ut is reue with B. Nevertheless, it is possile to mesure the initil stte splitting, using either the S = / or S = 5/ finl stte quruplets, n thus infer g h,p. When this is one, oth quruplets le to the sme vlue of g h,p (Fig. 3e, s expete. We fin tht g h,p hs greter mgnituethn g h,s nvriesnon-linerlywitheletri fiel. When exite y linerly polrise 85nm lser oth irulr polristion omponents of eh trnsition re visile in the spetrum (Figure 4. The splitting of eh stte is the sme within error suggesting the presene of iffering numers of rriers oes not hnge the sum of the Fry s-shell eletron n hole g-ftors, g e,s g h,s. The Zeemn splitting of X, shown in Figure 4, is proportionlto g e,sg h,s µ BB. There is 3% hnge in this splitting from -5 to -5 kv/m (Figure 4, fille t points. From the Zeemn splitting oserve with linerly polrise exittion we re only le to etermine ge,s gh,s, not the seprte g-ftors. However, optilly pumping the system with irulrly polrise lser preferentilly retes one sign of eletron spin in the quntum ot. This imlne of eletron spin n prtilly polrise the nuler fiel through n eletron-flip/nulerflop proess, resulting in n rupt hnge in Zeemn splitting s the pump intensity is inrese [3]. Aove this ritil pump intensity the Zeemn splitting is onstnt, euse the nuler fiel hs een suffiiently polrise to ountert the effet of the mgneti externl fiel.
