The influene of nisotropy results in the suppression or enhnement of the pseuospin preession of polritons sttere into ifferent iretions. This is exploite to rete intense spin urrents y exittion on top of lolize efets. A theoretil moel onsiering the influene of the totl effetive mgneti fiel on the polriton pseuospin quntittively reproues the experimentl oservtions. PACS numers: , Fe, D Introution.- The fiel of spintronis hs ome long wy sine the stuy of mgneti epenent eletron trnsport [1, 2] n mgneti injetion of eletron spins [3] tht egn in the 1970s. The spin of n ensemle of prtiles, suh s eletrons, n enoe it of informtion n toy this is exploite to proue nonvoltile memory elements with high re/write spees, high ensity n low power onsumption [4]. Semionutors hve the potentil for lower operting power n smller size thn their metlli ounterprts, n semionutor spintronis [5] hs een eveloping in prllel with metlli spintronis, however with some iffiulties for the spin injetion [6]. An lterntive metho for the retion of spin urrents in semionutors is provie y the spin Hll effet (SHE) [7, 8, 9], whih les to seprtion of spin-up n spin-own polrize eletrons in oth rel n momentum spe. However, this tehnique presents the prolem of the rpi spin ey n ephsing ue to the strong rrier-rrier sttering. Reently, spin urrents were generte in ifferent system, semionutor mirovity, using the so-lle optil spin Hll effet (OSHE) [10]. This optil nlogue of the SHE rete seprte spin urrents of polritons in rel n momentum spe tht trvele istne of the orer of 100µm, eviening the relisti potentil pplitions of polriton spin on the implementtion of integrte polriztion se optil gtes [11]. In this letter we show tht we n use nisotropi fiels to effiiently generte suh spin urrents in preferre iretion t engineere points of the smple. Semionutor mirovities re plnr nnostrutures esigne to strongly ouple light n mtter; pir of highly refletive mirrors onfines vity photons whih re resonnt with the exiton of quntum well emee in the vity. The norml moes of suh system re exiton-polritons, neutrl prtiles forme from the superposition of exitons n photons [12], whih o not suffer from the fst ephsing experiene y eletrons. The OSHE origintes from the omine influene of the polriztion splitting of trnsverse eletri n trnsverse mgneti moes (TE-TM splitting) n Ryleigh sttering on polritons tht re exite y n optil pump [13]. The TE-TM energy splitting rises from the epenene of the polriton energy on the ngle etween the polriton momentum k, n its ipole osilltion iretion, etermine y the plne of polriztion of the linerly polrize exittion. The role of the Ryleigh sttering is to provie the system with polritons with pletor of ifferent moment fter pumping with given k. In generlize form, the effet of the TE-TM splitting on the polriztion of exiton-polritons n e onveniently esrie within the pseuospin formlism y the introution of n effetive mgneti fiel whose orienttion epens on the polriton wve-vetor. The pseuospin epits the polriton polriztion stte, while the effetive fiel is n optil nlogue of the Rshfiel ting upon eletron spins in semionutor rystls lking inversion symmetry [14]. The effetive fiel results in k-epenent preession of the polriton pseuospin, whih les to the seprtion of spin up n spin own polritons in the Ryleigh ring [10]. In relisti mirovities, the TE-TM splitting ompetes with the polriztion splitting generte y the in-plne nisotropy of the smple, use y interfe flututions, photoni isorer or lol strins [15, 16, 17, 18]. Anisotropy results in the pperne of wvevetor inepenent liner polriztion splitting equivlent to supplementry uniform effetive mgneti fiel ting upon the polriton pseuospins. In this letter we experimentlly stuy the polriztion ynmis of exiton-polritons in the presene of suh fiel n of
2 2 the TE-TM splitting, n emonstrte the pperne of the nisotropi OSHE. Furthermore, the nisotropi fiel enhnes the spin preession of polritons moving long iretions given y the fiel orienttion. This is use to effiiently generte spin urrents t engineere points in the smple, where lolize photoni efet, reting n isolte pek in the polriton potentil, is present. Our results re in greement with theoretil moel se on the spinor Shröinger eqution, whih ounts for oth the TE-TM splitting n nisotropy effetive fiels. Theory.- Given their long eoherene time [19], polritons n e esrie y two-omponent wvefuntion, ψ i (k), where i represents either spin-up (+) or spinown ( ) polritons (here we onsier only lower rnh polritons). These two spin omponents re iretly ouple to the irulr polriztions of externl light, llowing for their optil exittion n polriztion resolve etetion. The two-imensionl (spinor) wvefuntion oeys Shröinger eqution, whih n e written [20]: i ψ i(k) t = Ĥij(k)ψ j (k) + The Hmiltonin n e written: V (k )ψ i (k k )k + f i (k) i 2τ(k) ψ i(k). (1) Ĥ ij (k) = δ ij T(k) + 2 (σ.ω(k)) ij, (2) where T(k) represents the (non-proli ispersion) of lower rnh polritons, σ is the Puli mtrix vetor n Ω is n effetive mgneti fiel. Ω is given s the sum of fiel representing the TE-TM splitting [13] (this fiel epens on the iretion of the polriton wvevetor, k) n n effetive fiel rising from the nisotropy in the mirovity heterostruture Ω n (this fiel is wvevetor inepenent). These fiels re illustrte in Fig. 1. V (k) represents the polriton potentil. We will onsier two kins of profile - one representing the isorer, whih is generte y stohsti fiel [21] hrterize y some orreltion length l n root men squre mplitue W rms ; n one representing n isolte pek. The ontinuous wve optil pump is represente y: iγe iept/ f i (k) = A i e k2 L 2 /4 T(k) E p iγ, (3) where the pump is Gussin shpe with energy E p, linewith Γ, spot-size L n mplitue n polriztion given y A i. Unlike the experiments in Refs. [10, 20] we re working with pump oriente t norml iniene (whih exites polritons with zero in-plne wvevetor, k = 0). Provie the pump energy is tune ove the energy T(0), Ryleigh sttering still llows the exittion of ring in reiprol spe (see Fig. 2), whih is y-linerly polrize pump x-linerly polrize pump igonlly polrize pump FIG. 1: (olor online) () The TE-TM splitting (grey rrows) n polriztion nisotropy (grey she rrows) n e represente y effetive mgneti fiels, whih t on the polriton pseuospin vetor (Stokes vetor). The totl effetive mgneti fiel (lk rrows) uses the polriton pseuospin vetors to preess. Pnels (-) illustrte the expete evolution of the pseuospin of polritons tht hve elstilly (Ryleigh) sttere from the pump stte (t k = 0) to ring in reiprol spe with ifferent plnes of liner polriztion of exittion. Note tht Ryleigh sttering lone preserves the polriton polriztion. The ey of polritons use y exiton reomintion n the espe of photons through the Brggmirrors of the mirovity is moele phenomenologilly with lifetime, τ(k), whih n e relte to the exiton n photon lifetimes, τ X n τ C respetively, y 1/τ(k) = X(k) 2 /τ X + C(k) 2 /τ C, where X(k) n C(k) re the Hopfiel oeffiients [22, 23]. The reson for efining the effetive mgneti fiel Ω is tht it llows qulittive unerstning of the omine effets of TE-TM splitting n nisotropy. The polriztion stte of polritons n e represente y the pseuospin vetor ρ = (S x /S 0, S y /S 0, S z /S 0 ), equivlent to the Stokes vetor for light, where S x = ψ +ψ +ψ ψ +, S y = i(ψ ψ + ψ + ψ ), S z = ψ + 2 ψ 2 n S 0 = ψ ψ 2. Grphilly, in the Poinré sphere, S x n S y re the pseuospin oorintes lying on the equtoril plne, whih represent the egree n plne of the linerly polrize omponent of the polriztion, while S z esries its irulrly polrize omponent [10]. The fiel Ω uses the pseuospin vetor to preess, giving rise to the pperne of irulrly polrize emission even uner linerly polrize exittion. A splitting ue to the nisotropy-relte effetive fiel Ω n of out 0.04 mev n e oserve, s epite in Fig. 2. We hve onsiere the nisotropi spin Hll effet t two ifferent lotions on our smple. At the first lotion (Fig. 2) the polriton potentil is the typil isorere potentil present in mirovities, eviene vi the meshe pttern in the rel spe imge of the trnsmission intensity. In the seon lotion, just 150µm wy from the first one, exittion is performe on top of photoni efet (Fig. 2). The presene of the efet results in Airy ring-like ptterns whih rise from the interferene of the k = 0 pumpe polritons n those sttere into the Ryleigh ring. In the sene of Ω n, four lternting irulr polriztion qurnts woul e expete s onsequene of the istriution of the TE-TM relte mgneti fiel in the Ryleigh irle, inepenently of the polriztion plne of the injete polritons [10], s the hrteristi signture of the stnr OSHE. In the presene of Ω n we n reover the four qurnts if we rotte the polriztion plne of the exittion with respet to the iretion of the intrinsi mgneti fiel so tht they re prllel, s shown in Fig. 3e-f.
