3 Folder 1: Mount Vesuvius, Italy Different volcanoes pose different types of threats. How can we know what hazards to expect? The deposits left by past eruptions give us many clues about how a volcano might erupt. Instructions Step Complete 1. Click on the radio buttons next to Inv 1: Volcanic Hazards and Introduction. 2. Double click on Introduction to open the balloon. Read the information. Then click on the X in the upper right hand corner of the balloon to close it. 3. Expand Folder 1: Mount Vesuvius, Italy by clicking on the triangle on the right. Open and read the Mt. Vesuvius, Italy placemark balloon. Watch the video on pyroclastic flows. 4. Read through all of the questions in the Observations section. Answer any of them that you can so far. Then close the balloon. You can re- open the balloon to review or change your responses at any time. 5. Find the latitude and longitude of Mount Vesuvius in Google Earth. See what country and what continent the volcano is on. Record these observations. (Hint: if you don t know the continent name, turn on the Continents layer by clicking the radio button and double- clicking the title. Then just click on any location to see the name of the continent. Click the radio button again to turn the layer off.) 6. Click on the Ancient Cities radio button and double click on the folder. Use the ruler tool in Google Earth to measure how far Pompeii and Herculaneum were from the volcano. 7. Open the Compass Rose folder. See what direction each city was from to the volcano. Record these observations. 8. Use your observations to answer the Investigation question. Be sure to use complete sentences. 5 Notes and Questions Folder 2: Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia Living near a volcano can be challenging. Where should people build new homes, schools, and businesses? Which areas are the safest? Volcanologists can help city planners decide. Instructions Step 1. Expand Folder 2: Nevado del Ruiz, Columbia and click on the radio button. Open the Nevado del Ruiz, Columbia placemark balloon. Read the information and watch the video on lahars. Complete 2. Record any information you can. Then close the balloon. 3. Find the latitude and longitude of Nevado del Ruiz in Google Earth. See what country and what continent the volcano is on. Record these observations in your field notebook. 4. Use the ruler tool in Google Earth to measure how far Armero is from the volcano. Record this observation. 5. Look at Armero in Google Earth to see if it is located in a valley or on a hillside. Record this observation. 6. Use your observations to answer the Investigation question. Be sure to use complete sentences. 6 Estimated death toll: What is a lahar? How fast can a lahar flow? How does a lahar form? How far is Armero from Nevado del Ruiz? Is Armero located in a valley or on a hillside? Is there ice or snow on the top of the volcano today? How many people are at risk from the volcano today? 7 Folder 3: Laki, Iceland Some volcanoes can harm people who live very far away. Volcanologists try to find out which volcanoes might do this. Instructions Step 1. Expand Folder 3: Laki, Iceland and click on the radio button. Open the Laki, Iceland placemark balloon. Read the information and watch the video on convective eruption columns. Record any information you can. Then close the balloon. Complete 2. Find the latitude and longitude of Laki in Google Earth. See what country and what continent the volcano is on. Record these observations. 3. Turn on the Borders and Labels layer. Find England and the Gulf of Mexico. Use the ruler tool in Google Earth to measure how far England and the Gulf of Mexico are from Laki. Record these observations. 4. Use your observations to answer the Investigation question. Be sure to use complete sentences. 5. Open and read the Summary placemark balloon. Then answer the questions in the Investigation Summary. Be sure to use complete sentences.
