4 What kind of change was this? Physical or chemical? How do you know? Chemical change Why? When you mix vinegar and baking soda, carbon dioxide gas and water is formed. This is a chemical change. How? The bubbles (carbon dioxide) How do you think this relates to real volcanoes? Magma contains dissolved gases that are released into the atmosphere during eruptions. At high pressures deep beneath the earth's surface, volcanic gases are dissolved in molten rock. The gas released into the atmosphere from a volcano is water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). 4

6 What is the difference between lava and magma? Magma is a molten mixture of rock forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle. Lava is magma that has reached the surface. What happened at Mt. Vesuvius? Pyroclastic Flow Mt. Vesuvius buried Pompeii Claimed the lives of 2,000 people 6

7 During excavations of an ancient orchard, casts were obtained in 1961 by pouring plaster into the spaces left by decomposed bodies in what became known as the "Garden of the Fugitives." When the dirt was removed after the plaster had hardened, thirteen adults and children were found huddled together, making futile attempts to shield themselves from the onslaught of volcanic dust, pumice, stone, and ash. 7

The resulting barren land is first colonized by pioneer plants which pave the way for later, less hardy plants, such as hardwood trees. 8
