1 Science April 6-10 L.HE Explain that the traits of an individual are influenced by both the environment and the genetics of the individual. L.HE Distinguish between inherited and acquired traits. Materials needed: ISNs (students & teacher), document camera, self-reflection pages, corrected tests Monday & Tuesday: ISN74 Self-reflection page LWBAT explain how traits are influenced and distinguish between inherited and acquired traits. 1. Pass back graded tests (some students still need to make corrections). Tape binding side onto ISN Pass out self-reflection sheets. Don t tape them in yet! 3. Walk through the self-reflection sheets with the students. They will complete their sheets as we go. When done, four corner tape it on ISN Pass out a sheet of paper to each student. 5. They will answer the three questions at the bottom of their self-reflection page. 6. Tape the top left corner onto ISN74 and fold it up, then over to fit on the page. Wednesday: ISN75 Animal Adaptations cover page LWBAT create a cover page for Unit 4 Animal Adaptations 1. Discuss what adaptations are. Refer to the video the students watched before Spring Break. What are some of the adaptations we saw on some animals that allow them to survive? 2. Students will create their Animal Adaptations unit cover page. a. Title, color, no white space, no markers. 3. Draw the a-ha connections light bulb on ISN76-77 Thursday & Friday: ISN77 Building Background & Sedimentary Rock Cycle LWBAT understand what animals need to survive. 1. Pass out the question for the top of ISN77 about cockroaches. Students tape it in at the top of the page. Have a volunteer read it out loud. 2. Have students discuss in their groups why they think the cockroach has survived for millions of years while other animals have come and gone. 3. Share out what students talked about in their groups. Then have students write a sentence or two in response below the question. 4. Students will write the question Can a polar bear live in Hawaii? Have a discussion about what they think and why. Then they will respond in their ISN. 5. Repeat with this question: Can a fish live in a forest? Remind students there are no ponds in this particular forest. 6. Have students turn their green book to page 105 and look at the picture. Discuss what the picture is showing (different animals throughout history). Note how the animals evolved from only living in the sea to being able to live on land.
2 7. Ask How could changes in the planet have affected the appearance and disappearance of various life-forms over time? 8. Pass out sedimentary rock cycle activity. Students will tape it (binding side) on ISN Ask students how they think that scientists know about all these animals that lived so long ago. Discuss that they use fossils and other evidence found in rocks to determine where and when these animals lived. 10. Work through the sedimentary rock activity. Students will become rocks. They will go to an assigned place labeled on the wall. When they are there, they will roll a die and record the result on their sheet and move to the location listed for their tossed number. Repeat this process until paper is finished or time is up. 11. Reflection question for ISN76: What are some adaptations you have that allow you to sit up in your chair and write the answer to this question?
