1 ODFW AQUATIC INVENTORY PROJECT STREAM REPORT STREAM: BASIN: South Fork Mill Creek Mill Creek / Columbia River DATES: September 7 9, 5 SURVEY CREW: REPORT PREPARED BY: Brian Bangs / LaNoah Babcock Staci Stein STREAM ORDER: BASIN AREA: 7.68 km FIRST ORDER TRIBUTARIES: 7 USGS MAPS: Brown Creek ECOREGION: Columbia Plateau: Pleistocene Lake Basins HUC NUMBER: 775 LLID: GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The South Fork Mill Creek habitat survey began at the confluence with Mill Creek and continued upstream 5,7 meters ending at the Mill Creek Falls. Three reaches were designated based on property ownership and channel morphology. In the lower reaches the channel was constrained by alternating terraces and hillslopes within a broad valley and in the upper reach the channel was hillslope constrained in a narrow valley. Land use was watershed restricted area and rural residential. Cobble, boulder, and gravel were the primary substrate types. Rapids, cascades, riffles, and scour pools were the dominant habitat types. Large wood volume was low for the surveyed stream. The trees found most frequently in the riparian zones were hardwoods -cm (based on four riparian transects). REACH DESCRIPTIONS: Reach : Reach : (TN-RE-SSW) Length 84 meters. Reach one began at the confluence with Mill Creek and ended at the property boundary. The channel was alternating terrace and hillslope constrained in a broad valley floor within terraces. The average valley width index was 6. (range: 6.-6.). Land use for the reach was rural residential. The average unit gradient was.8 percent. Rapids (6%) and riffles (5%) were the dominate stream habitats. Cobble (%), gravel (6%), boulder (%), and sand (4%) were the primary stream substrates. Active bank erosion was % for the reach. Large wood volume was low at.7m /m. The average residual pool depth was.6m. No riparian transect was conducted in this reach. (TNS-RE-S7NW) Length 795 meters. Reach two began at the restricted watershed area boundary. The channel was alternating terrace and hillslope constrained in a broad valley floor within terraces. The average valley width index was 4.9 (range:.5-6.). Land use for the reach was watershed restricted area. The average unit gradient was. percent. Riffles (9%), rapids (5%), and scour pools (9%) were the dominate stream habitats. Cobble (%), boulder (6%), gravel (%), and sand (%) were the primary stream substrates. Active bank erosion was 6% of the reach length. Large wood volume

2 was low at 5.m /m. The average residual pool depth was.5m. The trees found most frequently South Fork Mill Creek (continued) in the riparian zones were hardwoods -cm (based on one riparian transect). There is a water filtration plant in the reach. Reach : (TN-RE-S8SE) Length,5 meters. The channel was hillslope constrained in a moderate V-shaped valley floor. The average valley width index was. (range:.-4.). Land use for the reach was watershed restricted area. The average unit gradient was 4.5 percent. Cascades (4%), rapids (%), and scour pools (%) were the dominate stream habitats. Cobble (%), boulder (7%), gravel (9%), and sand (%) were the primary stream substrates. Bank erosion was % of the reach length. Large wood volume was low at 5.7m /m. The average residual pool depth was.68m. The trees most frequently in the riparian zones were hardwoods -cm (based on three riparian transects). COMMENTS: No fish were observed by the crew. Mill Creek Falls (8m high bedrock wall) is a barrier to upstream fish migration. The crew noted several human caused features which are potential fish migration barriers. At unit #46 (55m) is a.85m high concrete slab at the water treatment plant; at unit #6 (746m) is a.85 high cement structure at the gauging station; and at unit #65 (89m) is a.m high fish ladder. There are several unnamed tributaries and spring seeps entering the creek.
