GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF THE EXTREMELY SHALLOW AREA OF THE ISLAND OF PAG BRANKO PETRIČEVIĆ and ZVONKO GRŽETIĆ Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia, Split Zrinsko Frankopanska 161 SUMMARY - Ex Exploring the area of the island of Pag Geological survey of three During two days of survey district areas; operations, 37 geological Total surface of m²; profiles were made; Sea areas interconnected by low The presentation are discussing small bridges; the problems encountered Shallow area with an average during the survey, as well as the depth of 1 metre; result of penetration into the seabed that, despite small depth, Use of machinery for drilling a great number of multiples, was out of question; and the presence of the sponge Using of small boat; seaweed on the bottom did Equipped boat was manually attain the maximum transferred; penetration of 13 to 17 metres 1
Like multiple croissants; Paška vrata gate; Strong wind area; Access to the port of Pag is to some extent difficult PROJECT: - Constructing an artificial waterway that would connect the bay of Pag to the bay of Košljun; - Waterway Town of Pag Košljun 2

Geologicaly: -Hills around Pag are older than fluvial valley (geological age) - Before lend! - After lakes! - Finally artificial waterway! Area of survey aerofotogrametri picture & grid 4
Area of survey bathimetry & isolines Area of survey geology line and sampling points by drop & piston corer 5
The major problem was that the research boat could not sail from one aquatic area to another and thus had to be transported along with all of the equipment, because it could not pass under the bridges as they were too low! An aerial photograph made during the aerophotogrametric measurement of the island of Pag was used as a base. Because of the shallowness of the aquatic area, underwater plants are clearly visible. These, as was determined by the final analysis, attenuate the VF signal. The plants on the sea bottom, which are dark blue in colour on the photograph, have a texture of a sponge. 6

The LOW WEIGHT and WATTAGE of the equipment, as well as the OPERATING CAPABILITY IN THE SHALLOW WATERS, provided usable data when operating in coastal areas and enclosed shallow lakes. With regard to the SMALL ANGLE OF THE BEAM, it allows for most precise geological surveys and guarantees a wide area of use. All the operating possibilities have not yet been examined, but once the equipment is in our possession, we shall use it in as many geological and archaeological surveys as possible, in the littoral and coastal areas and between the islands of the eastern Adriatic region.
