1 353 About the Contributors Ruizhi Chen holds a PhD degree in Geophysics, a MSc. degree in Computer Science and a BSc. degree in Surveying Engineering. He is Head of the Department of Navigation and Positioning at the Finnish Geodetic Institute and an adjunct Professor in the Department of Computer Systems at Tampere University of Technology. Dr. Chen worked in Nokia as an Engineering Manager from He has been involved in research of multi-sensor positioning for mobile devices since He led a project to develop a 3D personal navigation system in smart phones during The system was demonstrated at the Shanghai World EXPO in Dr. Chen is the member of the editor board of the Journal of Global Positioning Systems. He has published more than 110 scientific articles. He is the chair of the IEEE conference Ubiquitous Positioning, Indoor Navigation and Location-Based Service, held every second year. Dr. Chen is also a board member of the Nordic Institute of Navigation. * * * Allan Brimicombe is Head of the Centre for Geo-Information Studies at University of East London. He has pioneered the use of GIS and environmental simulation modelling as spatial decision support systems. His research interests include data quality issues, the use of GIS and numerical simulation modelling, spatial data mining and analysis, mobile GIS, and location-based services. He is a committee or executive committee member in a number of UK academic societies and government advisory boards. He also has the experience of 19 years in the Far East as general manager of a consulting engineering company and the founder of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is a Chartered Geographer, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society. He is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences in the UK. Liang Chen is a Senior Research Scientist at the Department of Navigation and Positioning at the Finnish Geodetic Institute. He also holds a postdoctoral researcher position of the Academy of Finland from 2011 to Before joining the Finnish Geodetic Institute in the beginning 2011 he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Tampere University of Technology, Department of Mathematics, Finland. He received his PhD in Signal and Information Processing from Southeast University, China, in His research interests include statistical signal processing for positioning and wireless positioning using signals of opportunity.

2 Yuwei Chen received his B.Sc. from the Electronics Engineering Department of Zhejiang University (China 1999), M.Sc. from the Information and Electronic Department of Zhejiang University (China 2002), and a PhD in Circuits and Systems from the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics (SITP), Chinese Academy of Science (China 2005). He is now working at the Finnish Geodetic Institute as a Specialist Research Scientist in the Department of Navigation and Positioning. He has authored over 60 scientific papers on personal navigation and remote sensing and holds 5 patents. Juha Hyyppä is an Adjunct Professor and Head of Department at the Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI). He was President of EuroSDR Com II (information extraction), , and is currently Vice- President of ISPRS Com VII He was also Co-chair ISPRS WG III/3 ( ), Principal Investigator in several ESA/NASA Announcement of Opportunity studies and Finnish delegate at ESA PB-EO. He has coordinated 10 international projects. He has authored or co-authored over 400 scientific/ technical papers and reports on remote sensing, including more than 170 refereed papers, especially in the field of laser scanning and point cloud processing. Anttoni Jaakkola received his M Sc. in Automation Technology (2008) from the Helsinki University of Technology. He is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the Finnish Geodetic Institute, Department of Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry, in the Mobile Mapping research group. His current research interests are UAV and ground-based mobile laser scanning and new sensor technologies and algorithms for mobile and ubiquitous mapping. Harri Kaartinen received an M.Sc. (Tech.) degree in Geodesy from the Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland, in 1993 and Lic.Sc. (Tech.) degree in Remote Sensing from the Aalto University School of Science and Technology, Espoo, Finland in He is currently a Specialist Research Scientist in the Department of Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry at the Finnish Geodetic Institute. His research interests include terrestrial and mobile laser scanning and reference measurements. Janne Kovanen is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography at the Finnish Geodetic Institute. His field of expertise includes the development process of Geographical Information Systems. Currently his focus is in the development of mobile mapping applications and the use of ubiquitous computing. Heidi Kuusniemi is the Chief Research Scientist in the Department of Navigation and Positioning at the Finnish Geodetic Institute and a Lecturer at the Department of Surveying Sciences at Aalto University, School of Engineering, Finland. She received her M.Sc. degree in 2002 and D.Sc. (Tech.) degree in 2005 from Tampere University of Technology, Finland. Her Doctoral studies on personal satellite navigation were partly conducted at the Department of Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary, Canada. From 2005 to 2009 she worked as a GPS Software Engineer in research and development at Fastrax Ltd. Her research interests cover various aspects of GNSS navigation, quality control, multi-sensor fusion algorithms for seamless outdoor/indoor positioning, and GNSS interference mitigation methods. 354

3 Helena Leppäkoski received her M.Sc. degree in 1990 from Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Finland, majoring in Control Engineering. Since 2000, she has been working as a researcher at TUT, Department of Computer Systems. Her research interests include signal processing for personal navigation and positioning. Yang Li is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Geo-Information Studies, University of East London. He has worked in both GIS applications and research. His research interests are in spatial data mining and analysis, spatial data quality analysis, spatial simulation modelling, use of agent-based techniques, mobile GIS and location-based services. He is also a specialist in data handling, data integration and geocomputational analysis, including data quality modelling and sensitivity analyses. He has participated in a wide range of data analysis projects, including projects for KPMG LLP, NHS Trusts, UK government departments, and local councils. He recently had a leading role in the Olympic Games Impact Study for LOCOG. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Member of the Association for Geographical Information (AGI). Jingbin Liu is a Specialist Research Scientist in the Department of Navigation and Positioning at the Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI). He holds a Ph.D in Geodesy (2008) from Wuhan University, China. Prior to joining FGI, he worked at SiRF Technology for more than four years. There he participated in R&D of GPS receiver technologies as Lead Engineer and Group Manager. His research interests and specializations include hybrid positioning based on sensor fusion, indoor positioning using signals of opportunities and location sensors, GNSS receiver technologies, GNSS precise positioning, GNSS meteorology, and inertial navigation systems. He has published over 40 scientific papers, and is an inventor for one US patent for GPS receiver technology. Zhengjun Liu (Ph.D., M.Sc) is a professor at the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping (CASM), Beijing. His main research interests include methods of processing high-resolution optical satellite/aerial images and LiDAR data, 3D modeling and visualization. Over the years, he has published over 80 refereed papers, especially in the field of feature extraction and image processing. He led the development of the 3D visualization engine for smart phone navigation under the 3D-NAVI-EXPO project. Ling Pei received his Ph.D in Test Measurement Technology and Instruments from the Southeast University, China, in 2007, and joined the Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI) as a Senior Research Scientist in the same year. Now he is a Specialist Research Scientist and a group leader in the Navigation and Positioning Department at the FGI. He has authored or co-authored over 40 scientific papers and book chapters. He is also an inventor for 6 patents and pending patents. His research interests include indoor/outdoor seamless positioning, ubiquitous computing, wireless positioning, mobile computing, context-aware applications and location-based services. He has been session chair, research chair, advisory chair, and technical program committee members in many international conferences. Also, he is an editor of the International Journal of Digital Content Technology and its Applications, a referee for IEEE Pervasive Computing, Sensors, International Journal of Geographical Information Science, and various IEEE international conferences. 355

4 Guenther Retscher is Associate Professor at the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics of the Vienna University of Technology, Austria. He received his Venia Docendi in the field of Applied Geodesy in 2009 and his Ph.D. in 1995 from the same university. From 1997 to 1998 he worked as Lecturer at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His main research and teaching interests are in the fields of engineering geodesy, satellite positioning and navigation, indoor and pedestrian positioning, as well as applications of multi-sensor systems in geodesy and navigation. Dr. Retscher currently chairs the Sub-Commission SC 4.1 on Alternatives and Backups to GNSS of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) and also the joint Working Group on Ubiquitous Positioning Systems between IAG and FIG (International Federation of Surveyors). He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Geodesy and the Journal of Global Positioning Systems. He has published more than 150 scientific journal and conference papers. Laura Ruotsalainen is a Research Scientist at the Department of Navigation and Positioning at the Finnish Geodetic Institute and a PhD candidate in the Department of Computer Systems, Tampere University of Technology, Finland. She received her M.Sc. degree from the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki in After working as an information analyst at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, she joined the Finnish Geodetic Institute in July 2010 and enrolled at Tampere University of Technology as a PhD student in September of the same year. Her Doctoral research is focused on visual-aided seamless indoor/outdoor navigation, and she has so far authored and co-authored 7 scientific papers. Lea Tiina Sarjakoski acts as the Chief Research Scientist in the Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography at the Finnish Geodetic Institute. She is an Adjunct Professor in geoinformatics and theoretical cartography at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. She has published in the field of knowledge-based methods for GI, usability of mobile topographic maps, visualisation, and generalisation for network processing and mobile map services. Tapani Sarjakoski is the Head of the Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography at the Finnish Geodetic Institute since He received a Ph.D. degree in He is an Adjunct Professor in Geoinformatics at the University of Helsinki and an Adjunct Professor in Photogrammetry at Aalto University. Kefei Zhang is the Founder and current Director of the SPACE Research Centre at RMIT University, Australia. Prior to joining RMIT in late 1999, Prof Zhang worked at the Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy of The University of Nottingham ( ) and Wuhan University ( ). Dr. Zhang holds a PhD in Geodesy from Curtin University of Technology. His main areas of expertise are in satellite-based positioning, surveying, and geodesy. His current research is primarily involving algorithm development and innovative applications of GNSS/GPS technologies for high-accuracy positioning, atmospheric studies, and ubiquitous positioning. He is a co-inventor for several patents and has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications. He is a regular reviewer of various national and international funding agencies and journals, a member of journal editorial boards and a frequent guest speaker at various international events. Recently Prof. Zhang led an international research consortium and won a prestigious Australia Space Research Program project in satellite positioning, space tracking, and atmospheric studies for climate and space weather. 356

5 Lingli Zhu received her M.Sc. (Tech.) degree in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing from the Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland, in She is currently a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry at the Finnish Geodetic Institute. She has more than ten years work experience in photogrammetry, participating in more than 30 projects. Her research interests are 3D city modeling, algorithm development for laser scanning, and photogrammetry. Ming Zhu is research fellow at the School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences, RMIT University, Australia. He received his PhD in Geospatial Science at RMIT University, Australia in 2011 and his Bachelor s degree in Resource, Environment, and Urban and Regional Planning Management at Beijing Normal University, China in His main research interests are in the fields of indoor positioning and people mobility tracking using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Inertial Navigation System (INS). Dr. Zhu is a member of ION and IEEE. He has published more than 20 scientific journal and conference papers and is the winner of the Student Paper Competition and Best Presentation Award in the ION GNSS 2008 Conference. 357
