Dirk Burghardt Telefon: od Telefax: Internet: Dresden, 05 February 2015 Activities and structure of ICA Commission on Generalisation and Multiple Representation, In the past years 4 years our commission has carried out several international workshops: 30 June to 1 July th ICA Workshop on Generalisation and Multiple Representation - jointly organised with ISPRS Commission II/2 Working group on Multiscale Representation of Spatial Data (Paris) 2 July 2011 Tutorial for automated generalization (Paris) 13 to 14 September, th ICA Workshop on Generalisation and Multiple Representation jointly organised with EuroSDR Commission on Data Specifications (Istanbul) 21 to 22 March, NMA Symposium 2013 co-organised with the EuroSDR Commission on Data Specifications, on the topic Designing MRDB and multiscale DCMs: sharing experience between governmental mapping agencies (Barcelona) 23 to 24 August, th ICA Workshop on Generalisation and Multiple Representation - jointly organised with the ICA Commission on Map production and Geo-Business (Dresden) 23 September, th ICA Workshop on Generalisation and Multiple Representation (Vienna) In the past period 45 commission members worked intensively on a generalisation book published through Springer with the title Abstracting Geographic Information in a Data Rich World Methodologies and Applications of Map Generalisation. Publishing date: 28 February The book contains 12 chapters, with 27 case studies as well as seven technical oriented subsections from Postadresse (Briefe) TU Dresden Dresden Postadresse (Pakete u.ä.) 4 the most active NMA s to illustrate the usage of automated generalisation in map production Future work plan: The goal for the next period is to work towards a common Generalisation Ontology. A common Generalisation Ontology would support the exchange of generalisation functionalities between systems/web services and probably help to match user requirements with on-demand mapping products. A kickoff meeting is planned to be held in Paris, 26 to 27 March Further activities refer to the organisation of two common workshop with ISPRS working group WGII/2 (Multi n-dimensional Spatial Data Representations, Data Structures and Algorithms): they will join the ICA Generalisation and Multiple Representation Workshop in Rio de Janeiro, and we will support the organisation of a workshop at the next ISPRS congress (2016) on a theme linked to the representation of spatial data and spatial ontologies. A further aim of the commission is the publication of special issue in 2016 related to current research in automated generalisation, maybe on the topic of Generalisation Ontologies or Generalisation of multi source / user generated content within the new International Journal of Cartography (IJC). The commission plans to continue working under Dirk Burghardt as Chair and Cecile Duchene as Vice-Chair. As Cecile will finish her habilitation thesis this year, she will not participate at the ICA workshop in Rio. William Mackaness will further support the commission without being officially nominated as Vice-Chair. We will start to search for new commission chairs in two years to involve them into the workshop organisation for Washington in 2017 and to prepare a smooth transition of the commission administration.
