The extensive list of subjects available to distance students in the Masters program at Curtin met this need. I found online learning met the flexibility I was looking for but I never felt too far away from my lectures and tutors, and communication was very easy. The course notes provided an extensive background to the unit, lectures were recorded for me to listen to in my own time and help with practical work was never further than a quick phone call or . Living in WA, I was also able to attend classes when I found time, even as a distance student. The course has enabled me to grow my skill base and therefore help grow the business I work in. I am now much more capable to manage the diversity of work and although I may not be an expert in all areas I have a broad understanding of the whole industry. I now manage the GIS team at my company, a pipeline-related surveying and GIS company. We are expanding our niche areas to include health and sustainability along with pipelines, as well as creating applications and tools for others in the GIS community. But with consistent guidance and excellent support from the experienced staff members, I managed to build confidence and understand the subjects and study patterns well. The staff members are highly qualified and knowledgeable with respect to their specialised subjects and I found them always to be approachable and helpful. The study materials were very clearly explained along with good and relevant examples in the theory and practical sessions which helped me to understand the concepts quickly. The assessments were challenging and timeconsuming, but I look back now and realise how much I have learned from them. The learning environment at Curtin is very effective and stimulating because of its high quality facilities of 24/7 access to GIS labs, online course materials, discussion forums, and unlimited access to the huge online database of international journals, research papers and articles. After completing my first semester of study I found it relatively easy to obtain part-time work in the GIS field in Perth. My work experience helped me to develop valuable professional skills as well as provide me with hands-on practical experience using GIS in various applications. To view the range of research currently being undertaken in the Department, please visit spatial.curtin.edu.au/research_programs.html Geodesy is one of the oldest natural sciences and involves the study of the Earth s shape and its gravity field. It provides the scientific basis for precise surveying over large areas, navigation, mapping and charting, and studies of the physics and dynamics of the Earth. The Western Australian Centre for Geodesy is a young and energetic research team of national and international repute that forms a critical part of the Department of Spatial Sciences at Curtin University of Technology. It is also a key component of the University s Institute for Geoscience Research. The members of the Centre are very active in a diverse range of pure and applied geodetic research of national and international significance. Importantly, many of the Centre s contributions have proved of benefit to Australia, such as the development of the national geoid model, AUSGeoid98, the Western Australian STATEFIX geodetic network to implement the Geocentric Datum of Australia. Research in the Centre has also resulted in a spin-off company, Scanalyse, whose MillMapper product won the 2007 WA Inventor of the Year Award. Our research programs use state-of-the-art geodetic instrumentation and computer software, and generally involve close collaborative links with other universities, industry and government, both in Australia and overseas. The Western Australian Centre for Geodesy is particularly successful in attracting external funding through grants from the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Australian Government, principally through the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) program. We regularly attract well above the University s per-capita amount of competitive research funding. One year, geodetic research attracted 18% of total ARC funding to Curtin (~10 vs ~2000 academic staff). Our research grants and consultancies have allowed for the establishment of a dedicated Geodesy Laboratory in the Department of Spatial Sciences, where graduate students and postdoctoral research associates have unrestricted access to our facilities, as well as their own dedicated workstations and workspaces. Further information on these projects and reprints of our published papers can be found on our webpage ( 6
