3 INTROUCTION The workbook XPLORRS OF CANAA of the series OUR HOM AN NATIV LAN covers the period of Canadian history from the arrival of the uropeans at the beginning of the 11th century to the present. It is a funway for students to learn Canada s history. It is suitable for social studies activities in the classroom, students with special needs, SL students and home schooling. The pages of XPLORRS OF CANAA can be used for teaching, reviewing and testing. They can be used consecutively or randomly as needed, and they can be used at different grade levels. The first half of the book consists of clearly outlined lessons and corresponding maps, designed to eliminate preparation time. The focus is on teaching students the most important discoveries and achievements of the explorers by using maps, charts and illustrations. The second half of the book reinforces and tests students by using pictures, games, maps and word search puzzles to make it fun. The book contains 48 worksheets and 19 maps. ach map belongs to a specific worksheet and therefore both have the same page number and title. 5 Name: ate: LIF RICSSON In 1000 Leif ricsson discovered Baffin Island, Labrador and Newfoundland. ricsson s ancestors, the Vikings, sailed from Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, enmark) west across the Atlantic Ocean. First they settled in Iceland and then in Greenland. ricsson heard that there was forestland west of Greenland, and in 1000 he set out to find it. L _ BR R 3. N _ WF NL _ N In 1000 Leif ricsson landed in Vinland and built a settlement. After one winter he loaded his ships full of timber and returned with his men to Greenland. We know this because in 1960 archaeologists excavated the foundations of several Viking houses on the northern tip of Newfoundland at today s L Anse aux Meadows In 1977 Canada declared L Anse aux Meadows a national historic site. In 1978 it was also declared a UNSCO World Heritage Site. o the following on Map #1 using the above text: Colour _ (Sweden, Norway, enmark) orange. Colour the first place the Vikings settled brown. 7 C T Name: ate: JOHN CABOT In 1497 John Cabot discovered Newfoundland and the Grand Banks fishing ground. ngland wanted to find a sea route to the riches of Asia ( gold, spices, silk) across the northern Atlantic Ocean. This sea route was called the Northwest Passage. King Henry VII authorized John Cabot to search for it and any new lands. Fill in the missing verbs: Use the wordbank on the right. Cabot, his son and a crew of 18 men from Bristol, ngland, on his ship the Matthew. On June 24, 1497, Cabot on the coast of Newfoundland where he _ a flag claiming the land for ngland. On the Grand Banks Cabot s men lots of codfish. They were so plentiful that the sailors simply _ them up with baskets. With his ship full of fish, Cabot to ngland. He became a national hero there and was called the Great Admiral. A year later Cabot sailed again this time with 5 ships and 300 men. One ship turned back. The others were never heard of again.
