Towards the within JASMIN DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS NCAS Research Forum 25/09/2012 University of Reading Philip Stier Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department of Physics University of Oxford
Climate & Earth System Modelling Large uncertainties in assessment and prediction of climate change Key processes occur on scales much smaller than grid size of global models Observations sparse and inhomogeneous Introduction BSRN Surface Radiation Network
The Need for a Current academic practice underutilises existing (and future) data from models and observations Significant resources are wasted in repetitive analysis : Enable community access through a web based data portal with imaging, data extraction and scripting interfaces
Data-Flow Processing (quality control, ) Upload to CIS (automated from HECToR, MONSooN) Catalogue & Geo-Referencing User Creation (simulations, observations) Web Portal (plots, statistics, data extraction) Visualisation (standard & user scripts) Analysis (standard & user scripts) End Users & Outreach
in JASMIN Confronting Models and Observations Initial funding limited to core software provision
Specification of the 1. Observation & model data handling netcdf-cf conform model data (with pp to CF conversion) Active and passive remote sensing (L3/L2) In-situ data Observational simulator packages (COSP, ) 2. Data handling and reduction Dimensional collapse and reduction, hyperslabbing Co-location of inhomogeneous data 3. Data analysis and visualisation Initial sub-set of standard analysis techniques Initial set visualisations User expandable
Analysis Types [1] D plots (lat/lon, zonal/ meridional mean/slice) 1.0 Overlay of alternative co-located data sources Overlay on 2D model or satellite imager data 2D plots for model at observation site, differences, statistics Scatterplots of co-located data Histograms of co-located data / user-definable axes BC MMR: UKCA (BASE) during HIPPO latitude / E test -14 Plot of scalar model fields along aircraft flight track Curtain plots (time/height) from observation and model BC MMR / kg kg altitude / km n Coef f i c ient Cor r e l at io HadGEM2-ES TOA Albedo: Standard Deviation 2 4 reference O 6 8 Taylor diagrams Figure 2: Diagram for displaying pattern statistics. The radial distance from the origin is proportional to the standard deviation of a pattern. The RMS difference between the test and reference field is proportional to their distance apart (in the same units as the standard deviation). The correlation between the two fields is given by the azimuthal position of the test field. 3. Two applications. 1.0
Status of the Status Needed project extension by STFC (granted) Tendering process on-going Software development beginning this fall until end of March 2013 Initial demonstration project: HadGEM-UKCA + WRF Input from JASMIN users strongly encouraged Framework? Issues: Community (and database structure) needs to be aware of common data sets (and associated meta-information) Existing and future data in JASMIN should be shared and allocations based on community needs This is a community tool and should satisfy needs of wide range of groups
