2 Has one valence electron. Forms a plus 1 cation. Atomic number of 1. Symbol is H. Although placed in group one it s not a metal. It has 1 valence electron with the rest of the metals in group one. Hydrogen is the only element that can exist without a neutron. Hydrogen is reactive with Chlorine. Hydrogen is the lightest element. Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable.

3 Group 1 Group 1 (Alkali metals). One valence electron. Forms positive one cations. Form ionic salts. All Alkali metals are soft, shiny metals.

4 Francium is in group 1 because it has one valence electron. The atomic number for francium is 87. The symbol is Fr. It s lifespan is 22 minutes. There were four false discoveries by scientists. Marguerite Perey discovered francium in There hasn t been enough found to weigh as much as its atomic mass.

5 Group 2 Group 2 (Alkaline-Earth Metal). Has two valence electrons. Form positive 2 cations. Less active than Alkali metals.

6 Found in group 2 because it has two valence electrons. Atomic number: 88. Symbol for Radium is Ra. Discovered in 1898, in Paris. Highly Radioactive. Heaviest of all Alkaline-Earth Metals. Founded by Marie S. Curlie.

7 Group 3-12 Group 3-12 (Transition Metals). Can not tell the number of valence electrons. Loses electrons to form positive ions. Silver, gold, platinum can be stretched into different shapes.

8 Gold is in this group because it can lose ions to make positive cations. Atomic number is 79. The symbol for gold is Au. It s been used in jewelry since 4000 B.C. A stone age woman buried outside of London wore a strand of gold around her neck. 2/3 s of the world s gold is mined in South Africa. Earthquakes can create gold.

9 Group 13 Group 13 (Boron Family). Have three valence electrons. They react with other element s to form positive three cations. When burned, Boron produces green flames.

10 Boron is in this group because it has three valence electrons. Atomic number is 5. Symbol for boron is B. Boron is used in detergents. Lack of boron can lead to stunted plant growth. Boron is present in 100 minerals on Earth. Boron makes up 0.001% of the Earth s crust.

11 Group 14 Group 14 (Carbon Family). Have 4 valence electrons. The Carbon group are fairly unreactive. They usually share they don t form ions.

12 Tin is unreactive and and has 4 valence electrons. Atomic number is 50. Symbol is Sn. Tin s half life is 230,000 years. Tin does not corrode in water. Tin is the 49th element in the Earth s crust. Tin is mentioned in the Old Testament.

13 Group 15 Group 15 (Nitrogen Family). Elements react with other elements to form an negative 3 anion. Has 5 valence electrons. Nitrogen family elements form covalent compounds.

14 Arsenic has five valence electrons. Atomic number is 33. Symbol is As. Arsenic s melting point is 1,502.6 F. Smells like garlic. If it comes in contact with air it starts to tarnish. Yellow arsenic is the most poisonous.

15 Group 16 Group 16 (Oxygen family). Has 6 valence electrons. Gain 2 electrons to form an anion with a negative two charge. Sulfur is yellow solid and is used to make matches and rubber tires.

16 Oxygen has 6 valence electrons. Atomic number is 8. O is oxygen s symbol. Oxygen is the most common element in the earth s outer layer. It is basic for almost all life forms. Pure oxygen exist as a gas and is very reactive. It is odorless.

17 Group 17 Group 17 (Halogen Family). Have 7 valence electrons. Halogens react with other elements to gain an electron to form a negative one anion. This family reacts most readily with alkali to form white solids known as salts.

18 Fluorine has 7 valence electrons. 9 is the Atomic number. Fluorine s symbol is F. Fluorine compounds are used in toothpaste is it s melting point is it s boiling point. A lot is found in California.

19 Group 18 Group 18 (Noble Gas). Has 8 valence electrons. Noble gases do not interact with other element s because they are stable. All noble gases are colorless and odorless.

20 Neon is a stable element. Atomic number is 10. Symbol is Ne. It s colorless and odorless. It s non-metallic. It glows reddish orange in a vacuum tube. Discovered by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers.

21 Valence electrons can t be easily determined. Lose electrons to form ions. Group Some Lanthanides are used in steel and glass.

22 Promethium s valence electrons can t be easily found. Atomic number is 61. It s symbol is Pm. The melting point for Pm is 1,907.6 F. The boiling point is 5,432.2 F. Bohuslav Brauner discovered Pm. Half-life is longer than 17.7 years.

23 Group Valence electron can t be found easily. Lose electrons to form ions. All Actinides are radioactive.

24 Uranium s valence electrons can t be found easily. Atomic number is 92. Symbol is U. Uranium is radioactive. Uranium is named after Uranus. Boiling point is 7,468 F. Melting point is 2,075 F.
